FRIENDS OF ARNOLD CIRCUS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 12 December 2022
’ – Treasurer s Report April 2021 March 2022
While the figures in the attached report relate to the 2021-2022 financial year, as this is my first Treasurer’s report since 2019, I will also refer to activity in 2020.
In 2019 Martino Gamper generously donated the profits from the pistachiocoloured edition of his Arnold Circus stool towards our work. In the period to 31 March 2022 sales have generated £10,920 to support the work of the Friends.
We were also able to conduct a successful crowdfunding appeal in 2020 which raised £12,500 to support our work and this is why there is such a huge difference between the donations’ figures for 2021 and for 2022. We are deeply grateful to all the individuals who donated money as well as all the local businesses who donated raffle prizes.
We were also successful in obtaining a £10,000 grant from the Tower Hill Trust in 2020. However due to various pandemic-related delays the first payment of the grant was not actually received until 2021 which is why only £5,000 is recognised in the 2021/22 accounts. The remaining £5,000 will be in the 2022/23 accounts.
In 2021 the family of the artist Leon Kossoff donated some of his original artworks to be sold in support of our work, generating over £9,000. The Kossoff family had a bakery on Calvert Avenue and Leon grew up here in the 20s and 30s and attended Rochelle School. He sadly died in 2019 and we are extremely grateful to his family for their generosity.
The various lockdowns and pandemic restrictions meant there was a decline in the amount of money we got from the Film Office – a private company which manages film and location shoots for Tower Hamlets and which disburses a proportion of the fees received to local community groups.
Despite the successes, many people do not know that although the Friends have a Service Level Agreement with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets who own the gardens, the council do not provide any funds. This means that the only way we are able to pay for the upkeep of the gardens is through fundraising.

In light of this, and to try to formalise our relationship with our supporters a little more, the Trustees took the decision to charge a membership fee for the first time ever. Those funds will be reported in the 2022/23 accounts.
The Trustees are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported our work – financially as donors, physically as volunteers, corporately as members.
The Gardens were always haven for the local community and proved their value even more during the lockdowns and Covid restrictions. The use of images of the Gardens on corporate websites and the popularity of the space for filming demonstrate that our work in maintaining and enhancing the Gardens adds value and the Trustees are continually exploring ways of leveraging the benefits the Gardens bring to the area to provide for the longer-term sustainability of their care and upkeep.
