Objectives

  1. To protect and conserve the wildlife and environment of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve and any area subsequently included in the proposed Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (GMTFCA) to be established by the Governments of Botswana South Africa and Zimbabwe, and neighbouring communities.

  2. To advance the education of the inhabitants of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, GMTFCA and neighbouring communities.

2

Tuli Conservation Trust UK – Trustees’ Annual Report for Year Ended 28 February 2025

  1. The relief of poverty, sickness and distress of the inhabitants of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, GMTFCA and neighbouring communities.

  2. The preservation and protection of good health of the inhabitants of the Northern Tuli Game Reserve, GMTFCA and neighbouring communities.

Activities

During the year under review Tuli Conservation Trust UK (TCTUK) continued its arms-length relationship with the Tuli Conservation Trust (a Botswana trust) which is a charitable trust established to, inter alia , protect and enhance the Northern Tuli Game Reserve (Notugre), Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area and neighbouring communities through conservation and community empowerment.

Although TCTUK and Tuli Conservation Trust (TCT) have separate Trustees, each with their own fiduciary duties, both trusts have a common aim - which is set out in the respective Objects - hence the wish to work closer together. The relationship is formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which governs the relationship and responsibilities of each party with regard to grant giving.

During the year under review, TCTUK was chosen by a group of riders as the recipient of sponsorship from the Land of the Giants cycle event held at Mashatu, a lodge in Notugre, in May 2024. This event raised, through a participant’s GoFundMe page and individual donations, a total of GBP35,032.24 for TCTUK. The donations were raised to specifically support the anti-poaching activities of the antipoaching team that operates on Notugre. Under the above-mentioned MoU, TCT applied to TCTUK for this funding in full, as TCT had in turn received a grant application from the Notugre anti-poaching team’s operating company for funding to allow the purchase of items to increase the efficiency of the team.

After due consideration of the funding request from TCT and the supporting due diligence required under the MoU, TCTUK agreed to donate to TCT the sum of GBP35,032.24, restricted for use to partfund the purchase of relevant items for the anti-poaching team. The application received by TCT was in excess of the funds held by TCTUK, and the balance was funded directly by TCT.

Fundraising by the Trustees throughout the year under review was put on hold pending the identification of major projects to support. At the start of 2024 and after an extensive recruitment process, a Community Liaison Officer was employed to support the work of TCT, and with the addition of this permanent resource - meeting with the communities neighbouring Notugre and identifying significant areas of need - a programme of potential projects has been formulated which are undergoing feasibility studies and due diligence. Once the appropriate processes have been met, and sustainable projects identified, fundraising will re-commence accordingly.

The Trustees have throughout complied with their duty to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s public benefit guidance when exercising any powers or duties to which the guidance is relevant.

Joint Fundraising Commitee

The Joint Fundraising Committee is constituted in conjunction with TCT and has formal Terms of Reference. The main responsibilities of the Joint Fundraising Committee are developing a fundraising strategy, leading on all fundraising activities, and maintaining the TCT website. During the year under review, regular posts on social media were made to raise awareness of conservation issues, particularly human wildlife conflict.

Tuli Conservation Trust UK – Trustees’ Annual Report for Year Ended 28 February 2025

Members of the Fundraising Committee are as follows:-

Michael Dawson (Chair) Stephen Lansdown CBE Philipp Graf Jacques de Haan (resigned 4 February 2025) Fionnuala Carvill

Bios of the TCTUK Trustees and Fundraising Committee members can be found at www.tulitrust.org.

The Trustees would like to thank all those who raised sponsorship and donations through the Land of the Giants cycle event, and all donors who have previously donated to TCTUK.

Risk Management

The Trustees monitor the principal risks facing the Trust which include the receipt of funds, security of assets and allocation of grants. Due regard is given to the relevant laws, regulation and guidance that apply to the Trust as a registered charity.

Events after the reporting date

After the year under review, negative factors including geopolitical uncertainty, rising inflation rates and the cost-of-living crisis continue – economic conditions which will inevitably influence the ability to raise funds. The impact to the Trust will be closely monitored by the Trustees, with a prudent outlook adopted.

Mr Jacque de Haan retired as a Trustee on 4 February 2025 having served a three-year term of office. The Trustees would like to extend their thanks to Mr de Haan for his valued contribution over his tenure.

Financial Review

As a registered charity with a gross income of over GBP25,000 but not exceeding GBP250,000 in the year-ended 29 February 2025, and as set out by the Charity Commission, the Trustees have elected to prepare accounts on the receipts and payments basis. The accounts for the period under review have been subject to an independent examination which has been undertaken by Nicholas Farrant FCA on behalf of Francis Clark LLP.

There has been no trading income and the assets in the Trust consist of cash only, the balance of which stood at GBP202,420 as at 28 February 2025.

The Trustees note that TCTUK is subject to minimal overheads, with the operating costs totalling circa GBP2,000 pa in the year under review. Previous years’ operating costs have been less than this amount and the Trustees do not expect these costs to raise materially over the next three years of operation. As such, the Trustees will consider in the coming year setting a reserves policy at a level equivalent to 12 months operating costs.

The Trustees and Fundraising Committee members all serve voluntarily without payment. The Expense

Policy sets out the conditions by which the Trustees may reclaim expenses, but in the period under review no such expenses have been claimed from the Trust.
