The Trustees present their Annual Report and Accounts for AGHA for the year ended 31st December 2024

Objectives and activities of AGHA

The objective for which AGHA is established is to arrange social, cultural, educational and religious events on special occasions throughout the year. In addition, AGHA aims to help the elderly and people who need help and advice.

Management and governance arrangements

The management of AGHA is undertaken by the committee of management comprising of a President, General secretary, Treasurer and two co-opted members.

No trustee or committee member received any emoluments during the year in respect of services performed nor were any expenses paid on their behalf.

The weekly Thursday and Friday programmes were conducted. Moharram and Ramadhan Majaalis were held at the centre with regular attendees and under strict control. A minimum number of Iftars were held during the month of Ramadhan. Food and refreshments for these Iftars was provided by third parties. Likewise, majaalis were also conducted for the first ten days of the month of Moharram and Arbaeen and other special dates. Scholars and reciters were engaged to speak at the above mentioned functions mainly from abroad.

Europe’s largest Annual Majlis was held on 9 June 2024. The majority of costs for this majlis was borne by third parties.

Total receipts from subscription and donations was £74,106.00 which represented the amounts paid into bank through standing orders and sundry donations which includes Moharrum and Ramzan fund £13,658.00, receipts in respect of Europe’s largest Majlis of £35763.00, sundries via standing orders of £24,685.00.

Majaalis and Milads sponsored by third parties amounted to £110,116.00. This represents food and refreshment provided and paid for by third parties for each Thursday programme and other main events. Also contribution towards reciters’ fees and fares paid directly by sponsors for the Europe's largest majlis which was held on 9th June 2024.

Costs of reciters and scholars who came from abroad and who were also engaged locally, amounted to £60,384.00. This mainly consisted of their fees and fares including

costs incurred for Europe's largest majlis.

The cost of food and refreshments provided for Thursday programmes and other special events including Ramadhan, Moharram days and Europe’s largest majlis amounted to £53890.00.

Repairs and refurbishments amounted to £6,188.00 which included electrical work, decoration of building, fire alarm services and sundry other repairs. Sundries items amounting to £15,585.00 are mostly for disposable crockery and cutlery provided at Thursdays and other events during Ramadhan and Moharram. Other items included virgin media £576.00, Sky digital £430.00, Imambargah cleaning and rubbish removed £1,860.00, Parking and loos provided for the big majlis £4,098.00 and sound system £1,500.00.

Resident Alim’s fees are mainly his travelling and sundry expenses during the year for conducting Thursday programmes, Friday prayers and Eid prayers. Also included are other casual reciters on Thursdays.

For the year ended 31 December 2024, there was an excess of income over expenditure of £3,244.00 which was added to the accumulated funds which now stand as 208,908.00 represented by Freehold property £203,920 and cash at bank £4,988.00. Cash at bank at 31st December 2024 is £4,988.00.00 which is balance at 31st December 2023 £1,744.00 plus excess of income over expenditure for the year 31st December 2024 £3,244.00.

It is hoped that the charity will continue with its activities, namely, attending to the needs of Shia Muslim communities in future years and it is strongly hoped and expected that the next Europe’s largest annual Majlis will take place during 2025.

On 1st August 2024, Mr Jon Abbas Syed (formerly known as Syed Jarar Mehdi Raza) resigned as the trustee of the charity due to his other commitments.
