| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
Kondanani UK raises funds from individual donors, churches and other organisations, primarily to support the work of Kondanani Children’s Village in Bvumbwe, Malawi. KCV houses and schools over 100 children and employs around 130 local staff. Its work includes a school and Children’s Hospital, which also provides medical and dental care to children aged 1-5 from the wider community. During 2024/25 Kondanani UK continued to provide significant financial support towards the work of KCV, alongside specific fundraising appeals including the annual Maize Appeal and Christmas Appeal. Kondanani UK also continued its involvement with Exeter Kindness, an initiative which supports local charitable work in Exeter as well as providing opportunities to introduce people to Kondanani’s work in Malawi. |

Para 1.18 | The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit when reviewing the charity’s objectives and activities. |

| Contribution made by volunteers |
Para 1.38 | Kondanani UK operates with substantial voluntary input from its trustees and supporters. Trustees give their time to fundraising, administration, donor communication, governance and representing the charity. In December 2024, trustee Grant Gebbie and his wife Jane hosted Catherine, a young woman from Kondanani who was studying towards a career as a vet and wanted to gain experience of veterinary work in the UK. Jane is a vet and helped to provide Catherine with opportunities to learn about veterinary practice and |
agriculture in Scotland. This included visiting a dairy farm using robotic milking technology. Trustees also gave their time throughout the year to represent the charity and strengthen communication with the team in Malawi.
Achievements and Performance
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole |
Para 1.20 | The year to 31 October 2025 combined continued financial support for KCV with progress in fundraising communications, closer working relationships with the team in Malawi and the successful conclusion of a financial matter which had affected Kondanani UK since 2021. Kondanani UK received total income of £47,708 during the year and incurred expenditure of £43,969. Of that expenditure, £36,546 was recorded as support for Malawi, representing approximately 83% of the charity’s total expenditure during the year. Supporting Kondanani Children’s Village The annual Maize Appeal was again an important fundraising priority. In April 2025 trustees were working towards a £15,000 target to help meet KCV’s annual maize requirement. The final £2,500 outstanding was raised through a £1,000 contribution from Grant and Jane Gebbie and a £1,500 gift from Annie Horowitz. KCV subsequently reported that 530 bags of maize had been secured, sufficient to meet the children’s maize requirement for a full year. At Christmas 2024 Kondanani UK also ran an appeal to enable Christmas gifts to be provided for the children at KCV. Alongside these specific appeals, the charity continued to provide support towards the wider running costs and work of KCV. Recovery of funds following bank fraud One of the most significant developments of the year was the successful conclusion of Kondanani UK’s long-running complaint concerning funds fraudulently removed from its Co-operative Bank account in 2021. Three unauthorised transactions totalling £28,365.49 had been made from the charity’s account. Kondanani UK disputed the bank’s refusal to reimburse the loss and ultimately referred the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Following its investigation, the Financial Ombudsman concluded that there was insufficient evidence to find that Kondanani UK had acted with gross negligence and recommended that the charity should not be held liable for the unauthorised transactions. During July 2025 the matter was finally resolved and the charity received £35,247.08, comprising £26,865.49 of the outstanding loss and £8,481.59 interest. The bank had previously paid £1,500. The trustees welcomed the resolution of a matter they had pursued over several years. |
|---|---|---|
The recovery restored funds to the charity which can now be used in furtherance of its charitable purposes. 20 years of Kondanani UK The year also marked 20 years since Kondanani UK was officially registered on 31 October 2005. The anniversary provided an opportunity to recognise the contribution made by trustees, donors and other supporters over two decades while looking ahead to the continuing work of supporting KCV. Strengthening relationships with Malawi Kondanani UK continued to strengthen its working relationship with KCV during the year. In September 2025, Kondanani UK Treasurer Tim Davies was invited by KCV Chairman Dr Mbewe to join the KCV board. The trustees welcomed this as an opportunity to strengthen communication and understanding between Kondanani UK and KCV while recognising that the UK charity and KCV remain separately governed organisations. During the year Al Gibson also worked alongside Vincent Chatanganda in Malawi to support the development of KCV’s communications. This included helping Vincent with newsletters, social media and other communications produced from Malawi. Al also commissioned promotional video content to be produced in Malawi to help communicate the work of KCV to supporters internationally. This closer working relationship is intended to enable more stories and updates to originate directly from the KCV team in Malawi, giving supporters a clearer picture of its current work and priorities.
Additional information
| Performance of fundraising activities against objectives set |
Para 1.41 | During 2024/25 Kondanani UK invested time in strengthening its fundraising communications and making it easier for people to give. New PayPal giving links and QR codes were developed and incorporated into the charity’s websites and social media. New fundraising leaflets and pull-up banners were also created for use at churches, conferences and other fundraising opportunities. The materials were designed to recognise the foundations laid by Kondanani’s founders while communicating the continuing work of KCV. Kondanani UK continued to communicate with supporters through email newsletters, websites and social media. Work with Vincent Chatanganda also helped develop the production of communications directly from Malawi. On 14 September 2025, trustee Tim Davies represented Kondanani UK at the Rediscover Business Conference, where the charity had a stand. The event produced limited immediate fundraising response but provided an opportunity to raise awareness of Kondanani and introduce its work to a wider audience. |
|---|---|---|
Exeter Kindness Kondanani UK continued its involvement in Exeter Kindness during the year. The initiative began with the Exeter Kindness mural and has developed into an ongoing partnership supporting charitable work in Exeter as well as raising awareness of Kondanani’s work in Malawi. The Exeter Kindness website was updated during the year. This continued to provide Kondanani UK with a local presence and a means of connecting with people interested in supporting charitable work in Exeter as well as introducing them to the work of KCV.
Financial Review
| Financial Review | ||
|---|---|---|
| Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period |
Para 1.21 | The trustees have reviewed the accounts for the year ended 31 October 2025. Total income was £47,708, compared with £46,785 in the previous year. This comprised: • donations and legacies of £39,226 • investment income of £8,482 Total expenditure was £43,969, compared with £48,651 in the previous year. Expenditure included £36,546 in support for Malawi representing approximately 83% of the charity’s total expenditure during the year, together with £7,423 of other charitable expenditure. The Statement of Financial Activities records net income of £3,739 before an adjustment of £1,050 following reimbursement of the fraud. At 31 October 2025, the accounts record total funds carried forward of £41,637, comprising £36,637 of unrestricted funds and £5,000 of restricted funds. The trustees consider the charity to be in a sound financial position and able to continue its charitable activities. |
| Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held |
Para 1.22 | Kondanani UK has relatively limited fixed operating costs and seeks to use the funds entrusted to it actively in furtherance of its charitable purposes, particularly through financial support for KCV in Malawi. The trustees nevertheless recognise the value of maintaining sufficient unrestricted funds to meet existing commitments and provide resilience against fluctuations in voluntary income, unexpected costs and other financial risks. The level of unrestricted funds at 31 October 2025 was significantly influenced by the recovery during the year of funds previously lost through bank fraud, together with the associated interest. The trustees will therefore keep the appropriate level and use of unrestricted reserves under review. They do not regard the unusually high balance resulting from the fraud recovery as necessarily representing the charity’s normal long-term operating requirement. |
| Amount of reserves held | Para 1.22 | Unrestricted funds at 31 October 2025: £36,637 |
| Details of fund materially in deficit |
Para 1.24 | None identified in the accounts. |

Para 1.23 | The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern. |
| Additional information | ||
| The charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising) |
Para 1.47 | Kondanani UK’s income comes principally from individual donors together with support from churches and other organisations. Fundraising includes regular and one-off giving as well as specific appeals, including the annual Maize Appeal and Christmas Appeal. |
| A description of the principal risks facing the charity |
Para 1.46 | The trustees recognise their responsibility to identify and manage the principal risks facing Kondanani UK. Financial controls and fraud The unauthorised removal of £28,365.49 from the charity’s bank account in 2021 demonstrated the importance of effective banking controls and online security. The loss was recovered during 2025 following the charity’s complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Trustees continue to keep banking arrangements, account access and financial controls under review. Safeguarding Kondanani UK supports work involving children and regards safeguarding as a fundamental responsibility. The charity maintains safeguarding policies and expects trustees and volunteers to comply with appropriate safeguarding requirements. Reliance on voluntary income The charity relies substantially on voluntary donations. Income can fluctuate while the costs faced by KCV continue throughout the year and can be affected by economic conditions in Malawi. The trustees seek to manage this risk through regular donor communication, specific appeals and efforts to develop recurring giving. International partnership and oversight A substantial proportion of Kondanani UK’s expenditure supports work undertaken by KCV in Malawi rather than services delivered directly by Kondanani UK. Maintaining good communication, appropriate governance and a clear understanding of the use of funds is therefore important. Links between the two organisations were strengthened during 2025 through closer communications work with the KCV team and the invitation for Tim Davies to join the KCV board. |

| Additional information | ||
| Policies and procedures adopted for the induction and training of trustees |
Para 1.51 | Kondanani UK maintains policies appropriate to its governance responsibilities and charitable work, including safeguarding. A programme of policy development had been led by Treasurer Tim Davies and the trustees discussed governance requirements and the need to ensure that policies were formally reviewed and approved at the November 2024 AGM. The trustees continue to keep the charity’s governance arrangements and policies under review. DBS checks are required where appropriate for trustees and volunteers undertaking roles for which such checks are required. |
| The charity’s organisational structure and any wider network with which the charity works |
Para 1.51 | Kondanani UK is governed by four UK trustees and works in liaison with the leadership and board of Kondanani Children’s Village in Malawi. During September 2025, KCV Chairman Dr Mbewe invited Kondanani UK Treasurer Tim Davies to join the KCV board, providing an additional link between the governance of KCV in Malawi and its UK fundraising partner. The two organisations remain separately governed and Kondanani UK’s trustees retain responsibility for decisions concerning the UK charity and the proper application of its charitable funds. |
| Relationship with any related parties |
Para 1.51 | Kondanani UK provides charitable oversight and support to the Exeter Kindness project. Exeter Kindness seeks to encourage support for charitable work addressing poverty and hardship in Exeter while also providing opportunities to raise awareness of and support for KCV in Malawi. |
