Trustee5' Report (contlnued)
Chalrman's rwirt- Rach•l 14wmian
This has been a significant year. both for our charity and for me personalty. as I stepped into the role of Chair
of Trustee5, following the dedic<1t￿ IEader5hlp of my predecessor. Chrls L(KkyeT. I want to begin by sayin8
what a privilege it is to be part of an organisation with such a dear sense of purpose and such a committed
team ot statt and volunteers at its heart.
After a turbulent period. this year has rightly centred on recovery and retNJildin8. Against the backdrop of
ongoing economic pressure. particularly the deepening Cost of living crisls. we have worked hard to restore our
financial resilience.
We have taken a close look at how we operate. ensuring that every FKJund is spent wisely, identifying
efficiencies. and adopting more cost*ffeaive ways of working. We hwe faced some difficult decision5 With
courage and darity.
At the same time, we've continued to act with agility an example of whKh was securing additional funding for
information and advice over the winter months, offerin8 not just pr*ical support to those financially
vulnerable, but also reassuran￿ and human connection.
l am deeply grateful to our senior team. under the leadership of our CEO. ft)r approaching those decisions with
both ri8our and compassion, delivering a Significant￿ improved financial position. and a much-valued service,
as the year draws to a dose.
To support them in their work and strengthen the Eovernance of our charity we have welcomed foijr new
trustees to our Board this year. Chri5 Thomas. Rachel Hayward. Jeremy Wi150n and Kevin Gunputh. JoininE oiir
existing members. this year has been one of renewal for the Board.
I belleve the Charity will benefit from the fresh perspectTrves and ener&ry, that the Board now bring alongside
the continuity and experience of the Senior Management Team. I'm proud of the way we've come tO8ether,
united in our shared commitment to older people in Bournemouth, Pook. Chri5tthurch and East Dorset.
Workin8 tO8ether I believe we are striking the balance, between finarKial discipline and compassionate
responsivene55. Our decision-maklng throughout the year has enabled Us to meet immediate needs while
keeping sight of our long-terrn direction. I believe this approach leaves us well placed to move forward with
confidence.
Looking ahead. our focus turns firmly to the implÈmentation of our new Strategic Plan 2025 2028. Shaped by
the voices of staff. volunteer5, and the people we support, it sets out a clear and ambitious vision for the
future, reflecting the realities we face but also our determination to grow. Évolve, and serve with purpose.
Cruciallyi our clients continue to tell us that our work is makin£ a meaningful differen￿ in their live5. That
remains our greatest measure of impart and our sirongest motivation to keep striving.

Total unrestricted rese￿e5 on 31 Marth 2025 came to £987,213. This 15 S￿1t between E279,IX(I designated for
specific future liabilities, and £708.213 of general unreslriiied funds. Totsl re5tiitted re5erve5 On 31 March
2025 came to £73.412.
At the yearond the following designated reserves were held and totsl £279,LNX). This is made up of the below.
£150.￿￿ has been allocated towards the cost of replacing the three Mili￿SeS. The vehicles were replaced in
May 2015 and were depreciated over four yeais iherefore funds have aside each for their replacement.
The vehicles are currently an essential element of our services and purchasinR has been found to be the
cheapesi option.
In 2024 we obtained an accurate figure for the cost to the Charity of leaMn8 the Dorset County Council pension
fund. should the need to do so arise. There is only one employee left in the Scheme and when this employee
leaves a cessation fee will be tri88ered. This sum was assessed as £129K therefore whilst the liability relating to
this scheme in terms of the charity SORP is nil the trustees believe it 15 ￿&￿tIal that the termination fee be
ring fenced.
Trustees are mindful of the need to retain sufficient reseprfes to protect the Chartty in the future. The minimum
reserve has been set by analysing the cost of winding up the organi5ation including outstanding lease
commitments, staff notice periods and redundancy costs. The amount require%1 foi tl?iS 15 ieviewed periodically
nd a sum of £690.IXIO is required as of 31st March 2025.
At the year-end. free reserves were £401.603 whith equates to 5 monihs unrestricted expenditure. Whilst a
relatively high figure, the Charity remains heavily reliant on Contract fvndir* which 15 currently only agreed
year by year. As a result. the trustee5 believe that it is ne￿Sary to maintsin this level of reserves in order to
mitigate against the potential reduction or loss of these contracts. given the current public spendin8 Cuts.
The Trustees understand that charities must not retain unnecessarily h%h levels of rescrvcs and thc needs of
the Charity in the coming years are balanced with the objert of deliverlng tharitable services. The Charity is
following a medium-term plan to diversify its income profile and so become less reliant on ihe contract
fundin& and the trustees believe that it is essential to retain sufficient r&erves to allow this plan to be pursued
in the event of the contract income being reduced or lost. As of 31st M¥ch 2025, the charity had free reserve
of £401,603 is viewed as adequate to enable the Charity to build up uwestfirted income whilst runnlng Wlth
the deficit that would be caused by the1055 of contract income. The Charity has achieved this levd of reserve5
and is continuing to seek avenues throu8h which to invest the excess to secure income for the future.

ETHICAL INVESTMENT CONSIDERATIONS
Thè Board ha5 cor75idered 'ethical investments. It is accepted that one prson's view of 'ethicaV is not the
Same as another and that it is not the role of the Charity to attempt to d￿lne this. The Trustees must maximise
the value of the investments without taking too high a nsk, but there is an element of reputational risk to
consider as well as financial risk. The Board Is mindful that some charit￿5 have been heavlly criticised in the
media for their investments in industries includin& amongst other5. tobacco. alcohol. energy. arms, baby milk
substitutes, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Should the Charity draw 5uth uiticism, donations may be reduced
as a rosult. Whilst takin8 note of these risks. the Trustees believe that Si8ntfic2nt damage is currently not likely
to be done to the Charity in this way. The Board has therefore not set any restrictions on the types of funds the
