Furness Music Centre has a single board of trustees who meet monthly. The Director of Music and the Choral Director are also invited to attend trustees' meetings. Furness Music Centre is a member of Making Music, through which it obtains Public Liability, Property and Trustees insurance.
The trustees consider that Furness Music Centre does not encounter any major risks as a result of its operation. Financial risks are considered and addressed by a minimum reserves policy of £10,000 which represents more than six months operating costs

The charitable objectives of Furness Music Centre are:

a) To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals.

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects
This year of started well in September 2019 with rehearsals as normal in the Autumn term of 2019 followed by our concert at Christmas at St. Mark’s Church in Barrow-in-Furness, where the audience filled the church.
2020 also started as normal, with rehearsals for the Spring Concert albeit with some slightly worrying news of a new influenza variant in China, and as we now know this was the beginning of the Covid-19 global pandemic which resulted in rehearsals being cancelled in March 2020 along with the Spring Concert. The pandemic also prevented the charity holding any further rehearsals or concerts for the rest of the year.
The activities of FMCjuniors, our programme for primary age children was similarly impacted by the pandemic, with all tuition and orchestra sessions held after-school at Sir John Barrow School being similarly impacted – first by the general closure of schools and then as a result of the limited operations in schools in the summer term.

Summary of the main activities Finally, in terms of the impact of the pandemic, our summer tour planned for (continued) Yorkshire had to be cancelled. The trustees continued to meet throughout the year, and in March 2020 decided to suspend all activities. From this date, trustee’s meetings were held using Zoom. In May 2020 it became clear that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic was not going to result in a minor disruption and the trustees made several key decisions that the charity would

continue to pay its musical directors and tutors while finances permit

• utilise online channels to maintain contact with our members and to continue music-making activities as best as possible
-
Continue to provide instrument lessons using online conferencing tools
The trustees also began to gather information and advice from government sources, from Making Music and from other qualified sources and how best to enable live music-making to re-start. This resulted in the development of a ‘Return to Music’ plan which was reviewed and endorsed by the trustees. The rapidly changing situation as it evolved over the spring and autumn of 2020 resulted in several revisions of the Return to Music plan being generated and reviewed at trustees meetings, which continued to be held, often more frequently than every month.
It became clear over the summer that Dowdales school would not be in a position to host rehearsals for the foreseeable future, the education of their pupils being their reasonable priority, and the trustees investigated and identified an alternative location to hold rehearsals, should this be feasible.

| Membership again grew during the year with a number of new adult and younger members searching out Furness Music Centre via its website and by recommendation from existing members. At the end of the period, we had more than 140 active members including children learning to play orchestral instruments with FMCjuniors. |

Furness Music Centre has a number of sources of funds: • A grant is received annually as a result of an agreement with the Cumbria Music Hub to provide opportunities for children and young people to make music and develop their skills. We are grateful to the Department for Education, The Arts Council and Cumbria Music Hub that arrangements have been made to continue this funding, despite operations being disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic • Membership subscriptions provide a regular income from members. Many members who pay their subscriptions by standing order have continued to do so, and some members have also made donations • The provision of instrumental tuition provides another source of income. In general, this has continued using online conferencing tools Expenditure relating to the operation of the charity includes: • Furness Music Centre contracts for the services of professional music tutors – the Musical Director who is responsible for all musical aspects of the charity, the Choral Director who leads the choir • Rent for Furness Music Centre rehearsals on Saturdays and FMCjuniors operations on Tuesday evenings. This expenditure has not been incurred during the Covid-10 pandemic • Relevant insurance is obtained via Making Music, which is a membership organisation for music organisations. Advice from Making Music has also proved invaluable. • During this period, the Furness Music Centre web site was transitioned to use the Making Music Platform which has improved the information that we are able to provide to members. The annual cost of the Making Music Platform is no more than the hosting costs of the previous web site and is considered excellent value for money Operation during the Covid-19 pandemic • We are very grateful to members paying by standing order who have continued to pay their subscriptions even though we have been unable to operate as normal. Other members have also offered and made donation, and again we are very grateful • Cumbria Music Hub in conjunction with the Arts Council have also put in place a variation of the agreement that we have in place covering funding and have continued to fund Furness Music Centre as normal throughout the pandemic. This has received little publicity but amounts to a £75,000,000 funding in England throughout the financial year represented bythepandemic |

The invoice for accommodation for the Summer Tour in July 2018 was accrued from the previous years accounts, and so is not included in the total expenditure within the year

The Covid-19 pandemic disrupted operations significantly from March 2020 causing the cancellation of the planned concerts and summer tour. We continued to provide most lessons via Skype and Zoom, a Zoom Choir was formed and the Director of Music hosted a series of interesting podcast using a musical version of the 'Desert Island Disks; format. Cumbria Music Hub continued to provide grant funding under a modified agreement and a very generous donation by a local business was gratefully received. This enabled the trustees to decide to continue to pay our freelance staff, many of whom experienced a disruption to their income as a result of the pandemic.

The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Act and that an independent examination is needed.

Basis of independent My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given examiner’s statement by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my examiner's statement attention (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
