2023 was a year of progress. The Foundation's operating income from all of the three key income streams; the sale of
admisslon ttckets to Arundells, net proceeds of FOUnda￿On events held at Arundells, and other venues, and revenue
from third parties hiring the house or garden for their own events, continued to increase. The Foundavon now has a
wide and varied series of lectu￿, seminars, MU￿[￿1 reritals and theatrical and opera￿C perfomiances, as well as other
social events, throughout the year.
The Foundation's annual Edward Heath Lecture. the centrepiece of our year, was again held In Sallsbury Cathedral,
with David Dimbleby, the distinguished journalist and broadcaster. as the speaker, In May 2023.
2023 was a key year In the Implementstoon of our'Arvndells -Fit for the Future. pr(NJromEne. Through this, we are
working to improve the interpretrdtion tsf the house and colleLtion and their accessibility. tM)th physically and
intellectually, to the public. We are also reaching out to the local commun￿, especially disadvantsged groups, where
we think we can make a contrfbuuon to the quality of their lives. The Trustees are immensely grdteful to the Nati(>nal
Heritage Lottery Fund for thelr generous support. without whith this work would not have been possible.
The Foundatyon has also contlnued to broaden tts work beyond Salisbury and Wiltshire. The Edward Heath Universrty
Lectu￿$ series cononues and we have now hel¢J leLtures at Nottingham. Newcastle and Edinburyh universib.es and at
King's College, London, and wlth more planned.
In 2023, we prepartd for the launch of the Edward Heath Academic Forum. to ￿ jointly chaired by Professor Tim Bale
and Tom Chidwick, with a seminar at Queen Mary College, London in 2024.
2023 a19) saw the launch of our first event, we hope the first of many. in BTDadstrdif5. the town where Sir Edward
Heath was born and grew up. This was led by Gyles Brdndreth. who subsequently agreed to become our Honorary
Chairnian in succession to Lord MacGregor of ￿lharn Ma￿et. We are defighted to welcome Gyles and to thank Lord
(John) MacGregor, and Indeed Lady MacGregor. most wamily for their kind supp)rt of the Foundation over tllany
years. We a￿ pleased that John has a￿pted ¢Jur invitation to become an Honordry Vice President, under the
leadership of our Prestdent, Sir John Major.
We look forward to the futu￿ with 1￿c￿51n9 Confiden￿ but recognise that our progress has been achieved only with
the hard work and support of our wonderful {and growing) team of volunteers and our e%￿lIent stsff. My fellow

vlsltor numbers to Arundells, Sir Edward's former home in Salisbury.
There 15 no doubt that the sustained FK)St Covid increase in visitors has provided great encouragement to all Involved
wlth the management and opening of Arundells,. b￿Stee$, staff and the many volLrnteers who so willingly give up so
much of thelr time to allo%Y the house to be opened to ViStt<Ks on six days per week for the bulk of the calendar year.
Free entry continued to be provided for members of HiSt0￿C Hovses, with dlscounts for Arts Fund members, Blue Ught
(emergency services} and Defern￿ Scheme card holders. and visitors tsklng part in the Gardeners Worfd Magazine 2
for l offer. Those travelling by South Western Railway have also been admitted at a discount, and 2023 saw English
Heritage members also being provided with discounted entry. The strong additional marketlng platfoms created by
these reductions has helped to pn)mote Arundells to wider audien￿. attraLting mtsre visitors and thereby playing an
Important role In securing this continuing upward trend.

A wide range of events have taken place throughout the y&3r and Awndells has b￿rne known as a local venue that

The 2023 progrdmme included concerts played upon Sir Edward's Stelnway Piano by Clara Rodriguez, Domlnic
Sellgman, and Rosemary Tud(. A popular evening of foot tapping jazz music delivered by Jame5 Emmett's Ragtlme
Revellers, and the hosting of outdoor theatrical produttions that induded Twelfth N￿ht, Robin Hood, and The Wizard of
2023 also saw - ft)r the very first time at Arundells

learning to sa51 a Felucca on the Rlver Nile, and his arc￿M￿avigatIOn of the globe in retirement.
It was a particular pleasure to welcome HIS EX￿llenCY Miguel Berger, the Gemian Ambassador to the United Klngdom,
to the Gulldhall Sn Salisbury to talk about The UK and Europe and how to strengthen the partnership with Brussels and

The newly extended and refurbished'studio. Exhibition Room at Arundells has provlded a very pracbral and highly
effecuve space for smaller scale talks, recitrdls, meetings and workshop5 throughtsut the year, and we are very
grateful tts Wilsons, solic(tors, for sponsoring all the events taking pla￿ within this important building.

The pea￿ful and secluded garden at Arundells tr*Rsts beautfjful lawns, fine vlews and rtver frontsge. Considerable
rcylation Spa￿ - combined with a large marquee- makes tt the perfect venue for drfnks pa￿e$, lunches, dlnners
and other s￿la1 gatherfngs.
The Dlnlng Room at Arundells is also available for besk%)ke lunch and dlnner parues and 2023 again saw this beautiful
room hlred for pdvate events.
There has been welcorne intrease in the level of Interest Sn hlrfng Anjnddls by both kxal busine￿seS and for prtvate
famlly ￿lebrats"ons.
The NatKonal Lottery Herltage Fund 'Arundell$ - Flt for the F￿￿re. Projert
2023 saw the condusioo of the National Lottery Heritsge Furkd PTDiett Arundetls - Fit for the Future. Thls hlghly
successful endeavour has undoubtedly helped the Foundation to idenb.fy areas for development and improvement,
and to lay the footings for a strong sts3tegic pathway going fotward Into the future.
The estsblishment of stronger (and wlder) practical links with the local communlty was ￿ntral to ljie Suc￿$ of the
project, as well as the more detsiled identification of oJ￿t aUdIen￿ ¢Jemographics and opportunities to engage with
new audiences.
Piano lessons for child￿n frL)m local schools In Sallsbury have been estsbllshed and these conbnue, The Foundation's
organlsational strurture has been reviewed and work to create a ￿$111ent corporate tramework Is now underway.

The magnificent and varied collethon at Arundells, and how to better present or Interpt* thi5 wonderful a55et to
vSsStors for enjoyment, interest and inftsm)ation, has been explored. Lots of Ideas have emerged, wlth some new
Interp￿tatIve all-weather. outdoor panels and improved show room visitor information sheets, introduced.
An undoubted hlghlight has been the creation or the Arundells Community Garden . A ￿lIab)rat￿ve partnershSp wlth
Alabare land the'600ts on the Ground. team of military veterans) and the Wiltshire & Swindon Sport5 Partnership.
The garden is flourishing and has brought a great deal of enjoyment. scMJal engagement and therapeutyc benefit to
those Involved - from Ini￿al creation to ongoing development.
A number of people - ranging from stsff and volunteers to ￿nSultants and the lThste&s of the Foundation - played a
slgniflcant part in colleLtively exploring new ideas and c￿tift9 plans for the futu￿. Sin￿re thanks a￿ due to all
involved, and to the Nab"onal Lottery Heritage Fund for their financial 5UPPOrt and encouragement

Sir Edward Heath was bom Sn Broadstairs in 1916. The trustees are keen to build upon the Foundation's Ilnk with thls
well-known sea side town in Kent and to the Important part that it played in Sir Edward's Ilfe.
Gyles Brandreth klndly brought hls new one-man show to the SaTrh Thome Theatre in Broadstsirs in support of the
Foundation in July. This was an extremely wpular sell out event and lJ)anks are due not only Gyles, bLrt a150 to the
people of Broadstairs for their enthusiasty"c support.
The Unlversity Lecture Programme
The FoundatSon has conty.nued trs work dosely wSth a number of unlverslt(es across the UK to develop an ongoing
serie5 of lectures and seminars f￿Sed upon Sir Edward Heath's political legacy. The lessons to be learned from
politycal career which (x)vered the second half of the 20th Centttry. and hts perlod as Pmme Mlnister from 1970 to
1974.
In June 2023, Lord (Michael) Heseltine and Lord (Kenl Clarke were key parbopants at a well-attended event hosted
by the Foundatlon and the Strand Group at Klngs College In London, and tiued Memories of Govemment- and
Britain's membership of the EU.

The house, garden and wlleLtion will continue to be available for visitors to explore and enjoy on a free flow or guided
tour basis In 2024, and wlth an experted rise In the number of vlsttors durfng the year. Opportunities for both
corporate and private hire will gmw, and the Arundells events programme will conknnue to expand. An even more
extensive and wide rdnging series of talks. lettures, concerts, theatrical produrtions, behind the s￿ne$ conservation
tour5 and other acUvlties wlll be in eviden￿, with some of these events belng held, for the first time. in January and
February.
The Sir Edward Heath Annual Lerture H M Queen Ellzabeth II . Her tife. Legacy and seThI￿ to Britsin will be
held In 5allsbury Cathedral, with a diverse and wdl informed panel of dis￿sSants led by Gyles Brandreth.
The subrnission of an applScatlon to the Arts Councll England for Arundells to be granted Ac£Tedited Museum status. If
successful, Accreditstion will be a clear and noteworthy benchmark recogn￿0￿ of how well the diverse culle¢tign of
art work. chattels and memorabilia is rnanaged, conserved and made available to a wlde audien￿ for enjoyment,
Informaty"on and educauon.
2024 will see the launch of the Edward Heath Academic Forum,. a new ne￿¥ork aimed at encouraglng study of the
politlcs of the 1970s. The launch wlll be ￿lebrated at an event to be held in February in ctsnjunction with the Queen
Mary University of London and tiUed= Who Governs? Not you! 50 years Sin￿ the 1974 elertion. Speakers will include
Dr Robert Saunders, Lord (Robin) Buuer. and Sat7 M0rri9)n (Vi￿-chaIr of the Conseryative Party 1971 to 1975).
The University Lerture progrdmme will continue to build, and with a keynote event taking place at the University of
Ulster, In Belfast, In May. Thls w511 be held in conjunthon wlth the John and Pat Hume Foundation and examine the
50th Anniversary of the Sunningdale Agreement.
A wlder r3nge of Broadstslrs based acbvities are also belng planned, building UFX)n the sU￿$S of 2023 and with the
possibility of a *lection of Ilterary events, a theatrical produLtion of Maggie and Ted {a play written and produced by
Michael Mcmanus) and another highly entertaining perforrnaft￿ by Gyles Brandreth.

Expenditure Increased to 344,424, of which £52,227 related to fvnded projert costs.
Totsl expendItU￿ In 2022 was £325.770, of whith £49.951 relates to funded project costs.
Overall the￿ was a net 105s in funds of £23,780 compared with a 1055 of £49,042 In 2022.
The charfty had no restricted funds at the year en¢J. Unrestricted funds ¢Jecreased to £4.112,060. The fixed assets
total £4,166,114 of which the vast majority arnounting to £4.145,494 a)nsist of Arvndells and Its contents. This
therefore leaves £18,852 of unrestrirted fvnds for the chartty's athvlb"es. Includlng the malntenance of Arundells.
Investment Powers and Pollcv
The charity has the Fxjwer to invest in any way the Trustees see fft. The chartty's investments are, lTrowever, minimal.
Reserves Policy
The Trustees, pollcy is that the charity's free reserves (that is, exdudlng Awndells and contents) should not be
allowed to fall to a level which would Imperfl an orderly Closu￿ of the charity's operations.
TRUSTEES RESPONSIBIUTIES IN RELATION TO THE FINANcfAL STATEMENTS
The law applicable to charlties requires the Trustees to prepa￿ finanaal statenients for each financial year
which give a true fair view of the charity's finanaal activitie5 during the year and of its financial position at
the end of the year. In preparing the financial statements giving a twe and fair view. the Trustees should
follow best prattSce and:

It is the wlicy of the Foundatlon to cary out annually a full repair maintenance programme such that the
resldual values of these assets, based on prevailing at the date of acquisition or the 2005 probate value, as
appllcable, are at least equal to their carrying value. Significant repairs that will reoccur on a ryclical basls will be
capitalised and depwated over their expetted lifetime. Carrying value5 are reviewed annually and provislon
tnade, if necessary. for any irnpairrnent in value. The Ttvstees have no Intentlon to acqulre or dispose of any
heritage assets the near future.
