REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES 30[TH] SEPTEMBER 2021
The last year has been challenging for everyone but with the support of our donors we have weathered the pandemic. Our nursery schools closed in March 2020 and at the end of September 2021 were still closed. The Special Needs School opened briefly in June 2021 when we welcomed back 10 pupils for only one term before closing again. We feel very sad for all the children who have missed out on so much since the start of this pandemic.
Over the last year our Covid-19 response has supported over 500 people with food deliveries and seedlings for their gardens. These people were members of our women’s groups; staff at our Special Needs School, Bwama Health Centre and nursery schools; Local orphanages and other needy people in our area.
Crafts & Women's Groups
The shops at Birdnest and Overland Resort re-opened in November 2020. In the past most of our products had been produced for the tourist market and in these Covid times there are fewer international tourists visiting Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi has seen a small increase in local tourism and we are happy that some of our products are selling well to locals. A big achievement for us this year was the opening of our shop in Kabale town in November.
In January 2021 we started a bee project with three of our women’s groups. We appointed Christine Ryumugabe, a beekeeper from Kisoro and head of the Jireh Women Beekeepers, to head up the project. George, our Operations Manager, and Christine organised the making of the hives, interviewed the women interested in beekeeping, sourced equipment and held training sessions.
During the first bee swarming season just over half of the hives were colonised. We supplied the women with guava, bottle brush and calliandra seedlings to attract more bees.
In September we gave out smokers, boots, gloves and buckets. We weren't expecting any honey to have been produced yet, but one lady in Mugera did harvest an amazing 3kg of honey! Our intention is to expand the project to more women and to incorporate wax production and candle and soap making.
Special Needs Education Centre
With the school closed we were able to hold the planned computer training workshops for the teachers. We hope that what they learned will help them with their lesson planning and record keeping. There are so many teaching aids available online that we hope they will utilise.
We have repaired the floors in the classrooms, dormitories and teachers houses as well as the latrines and showers.
We continued to support the staff who had returned to their villages with food supplies and also supported some of the needy parents of SNEC children. Bonus was fitted with a new leg and shoes and was very happy.
Bwama Island Health Centre
The year started with Dr Robert Mugarura and his team running another surgical camp at Bwama Health Centre. Twenty-one people were operated on successfully – Dr Robert operates free of charge and so many lives are changed and all at no cost to the patients.
In September he operated several times on little Timothy who had suffered horrific burns from boiling water. Timothy then spent some time at Bwama recovering and finally returned home in November. Although he will have to have another operation next year he is now receiving the care he needs.
In April Unicef Uganda and the Ugandan Ministry of Health visited Bwama to launch the Covid19 vaccination programme for the lake area.
We have continued to supply medicines and PPE over the last year.
There are around 200 babies born at Bwama every year and we continue to provide each new mother with one of our mother and baby kits. Our midwives offer the new mothers ante natal and post-natal care, which includes family planning and contraceptives, and babies receive all their inoculations.
We are delighted to report that the nutrition and mobile kitchen programme that we started in 2017 at Bwama Health Centre began again in October. This time we are supporting a much wider area which includes our own women's groups and eighteen district health centres. In July we funded the purchase of a variety of seeds to start vegetable gardens at the health centres. These gardens provide food for the workshops and for the staff. Edward Arineitwe and Ronald Ngabirano (Bwama Health Centre IN Charge) are leading the project which aims to show the women how to feed their children a complete balanced diet using local produce.
Water Project
This is Emmanuel Musinguzi and two of his three children. Emmanuel is just one of the fifteen families we have recently supplied with water harvesting tanks bringing our total to 135 tanks. The water tanks make a huge difference to the lives of people living in the rural areas who have to walk long distances for fresh water.
We are grateful to our supporters who have ensured that we have been able to continue our work in Uganda during these very difficult times.
