Our beneficiaries 8re our members and prospécllvo members who conslsl of 101 famlly members who havts 197
children undef 12 years of age. In addition. we have also directly supported 31 adull and elderly residents In
conluncllon wlth the Thlrd Ag& Project.
Th8 famllles are malnty of BAMER ethnlo origin oJming from an exlroordlnary range of backgrounds with ¢hlldren
who live on a large high-rise co￿ncil eslale in NW1 thal conslilutes our prinapal area of benefit. The famllles we
work wllh com8 from hlghly diverse backgrounds a slgnificant number have refugee slalus or or5gin (Somall,
Erilrea, Syria, Afghanlslan, Kurdish. elc.) and hav8 multiple disadvantages in terms of overcrowding, poor health,
low Income and sp@cial n@8ds.
Introductlon
Over the year w6 registered 101 local families w(h 197 children under 12 years of age, There were 64 babies and
toddlers under 5 years1330/0I wilh a dedicated room allocaled to them and separate trips arranged e.g. Tree Tops
et Talacre and children's play orea5 at Coram's Flelds. Just over 50% 01 families regislered for the Iirsl Ilme with
Us (52 families) and many said th8y w8r& now to the area (and UK) and didn't know anybody. Some spoke lilue
or no English and 22 famllles said they were refugees. Families came from an extraordinary wide range of ethnic,
cultural and religious backgrounds. The leeling of economlc and soclal isolation was high with signlficant numbers
s8ying they fell very Isolaled and afraid of going out and this was higher among those with very young children.

prepared and 130 p3cked lunches given out. Trips included a cholce of Easter Egg hunts lo the Zoo. Camley Sl
ll81ural park and Regents Park with a cinema trip to se& the Super Mario Brothers al Tho Vue in lslinglon Artists
from the October Gallery ran a highly e￿alIve art day.

Summer 2023
The major pari of Ihe year's progranm8 wilh 101 families regislering with 197 children (under 12 yoafs) Ihat ran
from 25th July through to 31 sl August 2023. There were 63 Iwo-hour or longer sesslons in a wlde range of dlffer&nt
themes Indoors and outdoors including, piua making. family dance. junk modelllng. smoothie making, famlly
outdoor games, children's shows. Of￿arnI. slimo making and famlly blngo included. There were 19 day trips off tho
estate Incliiding (o The Postal Museum. London Zoo, Kew Gardens advf)nture playground. Hampslead H6ath,
Rulslip Lido. coaches to Southend & Brighlon and many more plsjs several group Irips lo the cinema. An avèrag8
of 49 famllios and 103 chlldren look part in activllies each week. We cooked 960 hot meals and provlded 761
packed lunches. We are very grateful to many supporting partners Ihal 8nablad us lo pul on and deliver an
impresslve Summer Piograrnme.
October 2023 Half-Term
There was an emphasis on Halloween Event5 and themed lrips al the Tower of London and London Zoo together
wllh F8mlly Bln90, Family dance workshops and a pumpkln ple maklng competition. 49 famllles with 74 chlldren
look part wlih 10 two-hour se55ions and 2 day Irlps wSlh hot meals plus Happy Meals al MGDonalds on the trips. As
the w8alher was so mild we held family 5POrts outdoors In the adjac6nt park vlith rounders, a relay races and a
parachute game.
Unfortunately. there wer8 no Christmas aclivltles due lo many of our k8y volunt8efS beSng away.

well used lo ask for help and support Irom each other e.g. Information on free activities. spe¢lal offers and
availability of support Se￿Ices. We worked closely wilh slaff from the nearby Regents Park Children's Centre

challenging was eng8ging with older Lliildren 8- 10 years and this usually meant giving them a ro18 to do

Hlba was new lo the area and knew nobody. Becoming a volunteer was certainly a way of gettln9 to know lot
of peoplel She 9Ot lo know other parents whose cliildren went lo the school that had been eamiarked for her
children in advance of start of the new school year. This she found extremely uselul in lerms of 9elllng school
uniforms, where lo go for extra help.
Zln and Serap were so happy to take on a fomial role when they became joint leaders for a trip to Brfghton and
having to organise 51 people. For theFn the whole experience was a positive one.

A hlgh polnt wa8 when Dr Martens sponsored a Summer Event (as part of a corporate volunt8erlng day) and gave

traditlons durin9 February H811 Term 2024. 22 dlfferent home languages wera spoken and chlldren dressed In
tradllional costumes and brav81y put on dance, song and slorytgllin9 performances in front of a large audience of
people. Families prepared and shared many different traditional dishes. It was a brillianl d8y In which 811 th8
children walked tall.

I lelt 50 lonety left with 2 young children and in despair a5 lo whal to do. Through the Time Bank both me
and Ihe chil(iren made realty good new friends. Some were even from Ihe same country as mel
Ailyah felt really proud and appreclated when she was asked If she could run an Orlgaml class for tho
olhgr childron.
As previously m8ntionèd 52 famllSes were èntirely new to us and had lo be inducled into our self-help principles
and that everybody had lo help each other (including Ihe children). Families could book on trips Ihal they would
lik8 to go on (canal boat, London Zoo etc.) bul firsl had to meet up to plan d8lails of the journey. sort out oystèr
cards lo Idenllfy any particular family needs and appoint volunleer leaders.
Many famillgs needed extra h8lp and support from olhers as they did not know anybody and often wère unable to
speak or read any English. Many dlfferenl home languages were spok8n. W& have Ilnked up wSlh the Thlrd Age
Project and launched a new ESOL class and English Club with the help of Camden's ACL leam that is slill running
successfully.
As we had children with autism and special needs. It was aft8r one difficult Incid&nl with a Somali young boy who
went ber59rk wllh hls mother fe8ling complelely helpless Ihal 2 Tlm8 Bank volunteers declded to go on specl8llst
courses Ihal have subsequently proved to be of constderable ben8fit and enabled us to have an Improved
underslènding and awarene5S to help manage dlfficult sltuatlons and b8havlour.
Allhough families have to reglstOT with us to take part most of our sesslon5 are rur) as drop-lns leading to lh8 most
popular belng frequently oversubsciibed. We Iried to deal wllh Ihls by b￿akIng up sesslons Into two parts and
asklng lal8comers lo coma back for Ihe sewnd part and this dSd app8ar lo ease tho pressures.
Many of our r8glsl8red famllies arè In Insecure low pald part-llme work and so had problems In 8cc6sslng our
aclivilles and services If these were on 8 day they were working.
W8 have Irled lo rernedy Ihls difficulty by Ilnked affected famllies together through WhalgApp wllh en offer of extra
support on days when we a￿ clos8d If they werè wllling lo acl as volunteer lead8rs. Thls has had somo success
bul wè neod to make Ihls option work better and expand the olfer to more lamilie5.

staff, lols of activities and even looked after the needs of babies and toddlers and roping off an area for all

75% of children r8POrt they had made new friends and have had posilive axperlences with other from dlfferent
backgrounds Ihrough the lime bank engaglng wlth local families from an immense range of 8thnl¢, Faclal, rellglous
backgrounds and nurturing the sharlng and exchanglng of skills and mutual self-help among chlldren and young
people registered on the programmè.
A majority of lh8 children when asked slaled Ihal il was havlng made 8 new frlend that they saw the most Important
outcome of taklng part In the programma. The feelin9 of havlng been soc4ally isolated and lonely at tlmes was
ralsed by several children
8 consequenca of Covid when social coniacl was severely restrlcled or even
prohlblted. We had 5 aulisli¢ thlldren who nomially shun the company of other aulisllc children bul had who
hav& become besl fflends that h8s help6d both other children and their famllie5 in coplng wlth th18 challenging
ondilion.
A clear observational faature especially over lh& Summer 2023 was how children took to Ihe Idèa of sharing and
cxchanging Ideas, skills knowledge and Ilems. Chlldren clearly loved leaming from each olher and also helped In
tem￿ of setting up and clearlng up when running sessions
Two clear hlghllghls both for children and everybody else who attended wero the End of Summer Hol% Party in
August 2023 and thè Inl8inalional Languages Day in February 2024. Children were the organi5ers and the stars
exhiblllng Iheir paintings and creations and in dorinlng Ir8dilional costumes and singlng stories. 51orytelllng 2nd
dancing that rnusl h3ve been quite daunting in knt of large numb8rs of people.

The Last Year
The charSly has had lo lake some difficult decisions over Ihe year as a result of the impending retirement of 118 long
seTving company secretary and Truslèo- Tony Bloor- who finally r8tired a5 Ihe Third Age Proje¢l Managef Sn March
2024. Tony supported RvfB during its foundallon years to become the first Tlme Bank in the borough and the first
In Ihg UK to register as an Independenl charity. It was also with 9real sadness that Shahanara Begum- our long
se￿Ing lime bank brok6r~ took voluntary redundancy In March 2024 after 17 years. Shahanara starled Inillally as a
volunteer and then bec8me 8n erriployeB from June 2tXJ6. We wlsh Shahanara and her famlly good health and
happinoss for Ihe future and lo thank her for her amazing hard work and commitm8nLover very many years. Finally,
wo wlsh to Ihank Lorna who was our sessbnal worker duflng the school holidays over many yèars and wlsh her
W811 for the fvlure.
The Future
Fatema stood down as a Irustee after 4 years In Early June 2024 in order lo b& considered and become a pald
sesslonal famlly organlser (following Succ￿sSIu1 coinplellon of her Gourses and tralnlng). And she wlll be leading
our Impresslve Summer 2024 famSly aclivilies programme (alongside sessional workers Aruzo and Zaieen). We
would also like to welcome Feklr a5 a new Tru51ee who replaces Fatema on our Committee.
The charlly Is In consultallons over Its future directlon and the clear fact theTe conlinues to be an overwhelming
unmet need In regards to local lamlly support and organised actlvlt183.11 is having lo revl&w access to appropriate
local welcoming premlsè8 and spacas pÈrllcularfy durlng the school holldays. There 18 lot of Interest In re-
est8bllshing Lltlle Fingers- a former Under 5s sew-help group that had weekly drop- in sesslons and were always
