Chairmans Report, AGM 21/3/21
2020 was a year of unbelievable trauma and triumph. Starting the year we had already had terrible flooding of the heritage centre and the floor was in a poor state. Then in February we were flooded again, followed shortly by the Covid-19 first lockdown.
The demands on our team of volunteers over the year have been very high, and all of the team have excelled at delivering a beautiful floor and refurbished centre.
Thanks to the amazing work of the whole team, especially Kath Taylor in organising everything, coordinating everything, and running everything. Her work went well beyond that of a volunteer secretary.
Pat Guy Collections Volunteer and Jeff Guy, volunteer support
David Fenny photographer, who regularly recorded the progress of the project.
Nikki Hening Grants Coordinator and builder liaison
-
Cathy Phillips – Chartered Health & Safety and Environment professional volunteer and flood response coordinator and Paul Phillips, volunteer support.
-
Liz and William Jarrom – Neighbour and Flood emergency responders, including moving the collection to safety; repairing the floor; then after subsequent floods, removing the floor.
Kath Taylor Secretary and Project Manager, supported by Ron Taylor as chief dehumidifier condition monitor.
Kevin Walker – long term volunteer, supporter and adviser.
Neil Curling, Structural engineers, future flood risk mitigation, including walking the brook and removing obstructions, and providing professional advice for free
Mervyn Johnson - Chartered Engineer and Chartered Water and Environmental Manager volunteer for future flood risk mitigation, again walking the brook and providing professional advice for free
- Tim Wagstaff Provision of secure storage for all DHC furniture, display cabinets etc. during the floor replacement work
Tom Miller – IT expert volunteer, responsible for sourcing and getting laptops user-ready, including providing secure storage.
Peter Miller, Trust Treasurer, providing advice and support throughout.
Thanks also to the Long Whatton History Group for being able to keep going over these difficult times.
Due to the hard work of the volunteers, we are now more flood resilient, able to comply with social distancing, and have a more disabled accessible computer group. We have still got work to finish on making the DHC grounds more flood resilient, and will require ongoing monitoring of the brook and flood risk, but the centre is now available for use. This amazing team of volunteers are the reason we are likely to be here serving our community for decades to come.
Going forward, 2021 is bringing its own challenges. Covid is still here, and currently we are still in lockdown but we are able to plan for a brighter future, reopening coffee mornings, hoping for new events and making use of the summer to come.
One area which is vital for us, is to bring in new volunteers with new ideas for events and ways to engage our community with their local history.
It is vital that we find more Trustees to help direct the course of the Heritage Trust into the future, so that our organisation reflects the sustainability we have invested into our buildings.
To this end Pat Guy and I have been attending Succession Planning workshops with Heather Lomas, and with help from Nikki have started advertising for people to get involved.
Once we are able, I plan to create posters and information so that people can come and see our flood story, visit us and learn about who we are and what we do.
To attract people we need to be available, so I hope we can reopen on Sundays 2-4. It would be great to find volunteers to help man these sessions from time to time, so we share out our Sundays.
I am hoping to submit two projects for funding in the near future;
-
To capture the social history in the making from people’s life experiences through covid-19. We have nothing to tell us about the Spanish Flu, but we can capture the experiences of Covid for future generations.
-
To be inclusive to Diseworthians and Long Whattans of today, by running a Diversity and Inclusion project of ‘I am Diseworth / I am Long Whatton’, where we ask people to tell us about who they are, how they came to be Diseworthian, and a bit about themselves. We can then link it to the history of the place where they live, and the people in the past who lived there, farmed there, or worked there. The aim of the project is to make everyone feel welcomed and valued as an interesting member of the community.
Its hoped that these projects will enable us to engage with people in the village and inspire people to become involved in the Heritage Centre and what we do, as both volunteers and also as Trustees.
We have done an amazing amount of work through 2020, and we have a lot to do in 2021, but I am sure we can do it together, because we make a great team.
