## **Trustees’ Annual Report for the period**

**From 01/07/2022 Period start date To 30/06/2023 Period end date**

**Charity name: Bromley Symphony Orchestra**

**Charity registration number: 1112117**

## **Objectives and Activities**

**The objects of the charity are to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals.**

**In presenting public concerts, the Orchestra seeks to educate, uplift and entertain a growing audience while developing the potential of semi-professional and amateur performers alike. We aim to present concerts of near-professional standard with a wide variety of repertoire.**

**The trustees are aware of the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and take this into account when planning the projects and public activities of the Orchestra.**

## **Achievements and Performance**

Audience numbers dropped by one third last year (compared to pre-pandemic levels) so we increased our publicity efforts, and even had a mention on Radio 3 for our final concert.

We provided another interesting and attractive season of concerts, starting with Elgar’s Cello Concerto (performed by our principal cellist celebrating her 40[th] season with BSO) and Vaughan Williams’ Sinfonia Antartica, featuring female voices from local choirs, Sine Nomine Singers and the Bromley Youth Music Trust Adult Choir. Our most ambitious work was Mahler’s Sixth Symphony, a large-scale work rarely tackled by non-professional orchestras, with the colossal wooden mallet of fate constructed by our principal horn player. Our third concert featured a classical masterpiece, Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ 6th Symphony and a finalist from our centenary composers’ competition, followed by the violent passion of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Francesca da Rimini’. We ended this 4-concert season with Dvorak ‘Scherzo Capriccioso’, Delius violin concerto in a memorable performance by Michael Foyle, and another demanding work for the orchestra, the sixth symphony by Sibelius.

## **Financial Review**

**We needed to increase reserves this year from a low starting point of £ 4,869.**

**We focused on cost control while seeking additional funding (with successful grant applications to the Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust and the Delius Trust). The trustees formed a production company ‘BSO Concerts Ltd’ before rehearsals started for this season, in order to fund production costs with the benefit of OTR (orchestral tax relief). As a result of these measures, and increased voluntary donations from our members, and an increase in ticket revenue per concert, and over £2000 in one-time donations, we ended the year with reserves of £19,697.**

**The Constitution does not detail a reserve policy for the Orchestra. The treasurer aims to maintain a minimum reserve that would allow the funding of the next concert with typical expenses in case a planned concert must be cancelled with uninsured losses. A special reserve, typically funded by occasional bequests, may be held for specific projects as determined by the committee (and within the bounds of each bequest when restrictions are specified).**

**The principal sources of funds for the Orchestra are membership subscriptions and ticket revenue from concert tickets, with additional donations from patrons. This year, we also received a donation from the ESG Robinson Charitable Trust and were nominated to receive the closing balance of the Ripley Recitals Association.**

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

**The governing document of the Orchestra is its revised Constitution dated May 2014.**

**The Orchestra is an unincorporated association**

**The management of (the Orchestra) shall be in the hands of a Committee consisting of the following Officers: a Chair, a Secretary, a Treasurer and a Librarian and at least four but no more than eight other members. The Officers and other Committee members shall be elected by and out of the Society's members at the AGM; the Officers shall hold office for three years and the Committee members shall hold office for one year and shall all be eligible for re** ‑ **election. The Committee** ‑ **shall have the power to co opt further members on to the Committee and to fill any vacancies arising during the year. The committee are the charity trustees.**
