## **Trustees’ Annual Report for the period** **From 01/07/2021 Period start date To 30/06/2022 Period end date** **Charity name: Bromley Symphony Orchestra** **Charity registration number: 1112117** ## **Objectives and Activities** **The objects of the charity are to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals.** **In presenting public concerts, the Orchestra seeks to educate, uplift and entertain a growing audience while developing the potential of semi-professional and amateur performers alike. We aim to present concerts of near-professional standard with a wide variety of repertoire.** **The trustees are aware of the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit and take this into account when planning the projects and public activities of the Orchestra.** ## **Achievements and Performance** **After a year without concerts, we recognised the importance of starting the 2021-22 season as soon as possible when the COVID-19 ban on public gatherings was lifted. We arranged a summer concert before our regular concert season, performing Wagner’s overture to ‘Die Meistersinger’, Elgar ‘Sea Pictures’ and Beethoven’s fifth symphony twice on the same day to allow space for social distancing in the auditorium. We dedicated the Elgar song cycle to the memory of our former President, Anthony Payne,** **We prepared an ambitious programme for our regular concert season to demonstrate our renewed commitment and passion for high-quality music-making. Highlights included Bartok 3[rd] concerto for Piano, Horowitz concerto for Euphonium (dedicated to the composer who sadly died a few weeks before the performance) and Korngold Violin concerto, symphonies by Bax, Bruckner, Dvorak and Mendelssohn, ‘The Lark Ascending’ by Vaughan Williams, ‘The Fountains of Rome’ by Respighi, and another finalist from our centenary composers' competition (‘Bromleag’ by Robert Ely).** **We finished the season with an additional concert for all ages, at family-friendly prices, featuring ‘Little Red Hiding Hood’ by our President, Paul Patterson. As expected, the costs of a six-concert season were higher than usual but kept within the planned budget.** ## **Financial Review** **The previous financial year ended with accumulated reserves of £ 12,427** **The current season of concerts was expected to reduce reserves below our normal limit (with a special reserve charge to cover the instrument hire and soloist fees for the piano concerto). We saw this as an investment in the future of the orchestra, as scaling back our concert programmes to fit the expected reduction in ticket revenue would not increase audience numbers in the longer term.** **We improved on budgeted costs and finished the season with £4869 in reserves.** **The Constitution does not detail a reserve policy for the Orchestra. The treasurer aims to maintain a minimum reserve that would allow the funding of the next concert with typical expenses in case a planned concert must be cancelled with uninsured losses. A special reserve, typically funded by occasional bequests, may be held for specific projects as determined by the committee (and within the bounds of each bequest when restrictions are specified).** **The principal sources of funds for the Orchestra are membership subscriptions and ticket revenue from concert tickets, with additional donations from patrons.** **We plan to restrict costs and increase ticket sales next season.** ## **Structure, Governance and Management** **The governing document of the Orchestra is its revised Constitution dated May 2014.** **The Orchestra is an unincorporated association** **The management of (the Orchestra) shall be in the hands of a Committee consisting of the following Officers: a Chair, a Secretary, a Treasurer and a Librarian and at least four but no more than eight other members. The Officers and other Committee members shall be elected by and out of the Society's members at the AGM; the Officers shall hold office for three years and the Committee members shall hold office for one year and shall all be eligible for re** ‑ **election. The Committee shall have** ‑ **the power to co opt further members on to the Committee and to fill any vacancies arising during the year.
