University of Tasmanla. Hobart and tsught in both state and private sectors in Tasmania before mo￿ng first to
N8w York thèn to London, whère she ran a small business for erght years. She retumed lo teaching when her
Children were older and laught al The Dragon School for nine years. She recently retired to pursue her first
love of botanical illustration and gard8ning. Maura also works for th8 ch8rtties Ernmaus. Fawnily Link8 and the
Story Museum.
Jane Annett. appolnted 2011. Is respun$ibl8 for organising a prcoramme of fund-raising visits to gardens
thin reasonable reach of Oxford and has been dolng thls for th8 Fdends slncg 21105. Jane tralned as 8
tsacher in Cambridge sp8cialising in BiologylBotany and has taught 3 yaar olds to 90 yaar olds in her time.
Her final role wa¥ heading a Field Study Centre in Headinglon Quarry. In 1995 the Study Centre brought
students to th8 Botanlc Gardens forjoint lectures on plants and the environment and they still visit to this day.
Hemlata Bountra, appointed May 2013, Is r8sponslblè for flnanclal 8dministralion as Treasurer. She is a
Chartered Accountant and eurrenlly work3 al St Hilda's College, Oxford. Before coming to Oxford, she had
similar rol8 at Murray Eoknrds College in Cambridge. Previous fin8nc8 roles included stints in th8 hospitalTrty,
e-commerce ￿ manufactudng industy. She is also a trustee of Donvilte Hall.
Harri&t Brethorton. appointed Othber 2017, is responsible for organising garden visits and Ihe Forum.
For most of her worktng Ilfe. Harrfet was a Probation Offi￿r in London. On rnoving to Oxford in 1993. as
monager. she rnoved to the Family C¢Mrt Service, which Iri 2001 became the Children arKI Family Court
Advisory and Support Service. Harri￿ ènded hèr car88r as the CAFCASS Resear<* Officer. Sin¢x her
reUrem8nt. hor rnaln Interest has been with the FOBGA. She is also a Trustee of Flexicare. a charity which
provides babysitting for skk and dlsabled chlldren.
Simon Hiscock, appointed in 2018. is Director of the Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum. Simon read
Botsny at w0￿518r College Oxford and gained his DPhil at Oxford in 1993. In 2000 he moved lo the
unlvers￿ of Brtstol a8 a lecturer In Plant Sclences. He was subsequently promoted to Reader {20031 and
Professor of Botsny in 2007 and served as Direcior of the Bristol Botsnk Garden from 2000-2015. He
retumed to Oxford in July 2015 to takè up his currnnt post and a F&ltowship at Christ Church. Simon ts a
twstee and Scien*ffic Secretsry of the Linnean Society of London and a trustee of the New Phytologi5t Trust.

cllnical practlce in 2013. She was Assoclale Dean at Oxford Deanery for Postgraduate Medical and Dental
education until 2016 and is a Trustae for Rose HIH Junior Youth Club. She gardens in Oxford and Comwall.
Anna Nasmyth, appointed 2009. is Company Secretsry. After a career in publishing in the UK and USA, Anna
moved wlth her family to Vlenn8 and became involved In thg Mendgl Centre In Bmo, Czech Republic. first as
Project Manager and then as the Chlef Executtve 0ffi¢6r. The Mendel Centre established the Mendel Museurn
of Ganatics in Bmo and sèt up an annual lecture sories. The Mendal Lactures. She is also a trustee of Mda.
Sarah Taylor. appointed 2005. helps wlth actwittes lor the Bobarts Patron Group and is a membèr of the
Vlsilors. She studied biochemlsty at Oxford then worked as a fijnd manager for Philllps and Drew and Unlon
Bank of Switz8Fland. She retFred in 1991 to become a mother. Since 2000 sh8 and h8r htjsband have r8Stored
the Tudor house at Rycote. nèar Thamè, and have created a new garden there. Her other charity
involvements include the League of Friends of Thame Communty Hospital and Sylva Foundation, wh￿h she
chairs, The Oxfordshire Victoria County History Trust and Oxford Lieder festlval of which she is a trLtstee. She

Magtslrale on the Oxford bench with a specialist role in YoLrth Courts. When she retired from the benth. she
was appointed a School Govemor, and subs8quenUy became a trustee of the Northem House Schools
Academy Board. She was for many years edltor of the Frtends. e-bullefjn. She ha5 now taken on the role of
managlng the voluntsers for the Frfends. recruitlng and organlstng and matchlng voluntsgfs to roles for

AIMS
The aims of The Friends of Oxford Botanic Garden 8nd Arbrxetum are to support and assist Ihe work of Ihe
Oxford Botanic Garden and Afboretum (￿e Garden'l. The Garden, part of Oxfor(l Unlversoty, has obpctive8
which benefit both the University and the general publio These are to make th9 plant colloctions:

Thg Gardgn was fomied in 1621 and Is the oldesl botanlc garden in the UK. It has a long history of serving
both the University and the publtc with consetvation. educational and recreational themes.
The Garden participates In a global stratsgy for plant o)nservatbn wtth other leadlng botanic g8rdens around
the worfd. through a programme of propagatlon and dlstrfbu(ion of ￿re plants. Al the Arboreknm, the
wO￿landS and wtld flower meadows are managed to ensure these habitats arn conserved for fu￿re
generalions. Through its staff trainee s¢heme the Garden makes a major conlribulion to the ￿eation of the
next generation of horticulturalists for the UK and ovèrseas. In addition, both the 8olanic Garden and Ihe
boretum provide recreational facilities f￿ the publi¢ to enJoy throughout the year. Durfng the yaar there were
129,036 {2020..216.6841 visitors to the faciliti&s. of which 21,355 12020= 21.050) were children. Vi%tor
number5 were down as both the Garden and Arb¢xetum were closed for part of the year due to Cowd
restrictions and visitor numbers were restricted due to social distancing measures in place.
The Trustges are mlndfijl of their duly to ensure that the Charity's a¢tivibes a￿$t for the public ban•fiL Thay
have constdered Charity Commission guidance in section 17{51 of the 2011 Charities Act. and are satisfied
that the performance aThJ achievements of the charity during the year. as outlined below. are consistent with
this duty.
STRUCTURE. GOVERNANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT
The Friends of the Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum is 8 reglsterod (*arfty and 8 company Ilmtted (by
guarantee. The Friends are govemed by a Memorandurn and Articles of Association and ts managed by
Board of Directors. The Directors are charity trustees as defined by Section 177 of the Chartuès Act 2011.
The Dire¢tors 8re elected for three years by m8mbers of The F￿9ndS at the Annual Gener81 Meeting. A third
of the Q)Irg¢lors musl retlrg 9a¢h year. but may stan¢Y for rg-elgctlon. Separat8Jy, the Universty of Oxford is
entifjed to appoint an additional Director for a three-year term of office. Since Septembar 2018. this post is
held by Mr Simon His¢o¢k' Diiertor of the Universty of Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum.

The Directors have the power to CO-OPI members during the year. Board meetings are held at least three
Ilrnes each year.
Manag8ment of mèmbership recTuitment and publicity, special wents and visits to privat8 gardens is
delegated to small groups of volunleers. Durfng the year all the members of these small groups met three
t￿eS with the Directors as the Forum ofThe FI￿nds.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
It was B difficult year for the Friends, as for many charltles. du& to the p¥ndemic. M05t of the normal actiwty,
whether garden visits or fund-raislng events. had lo be can￿lled or poslponed. In addition, both th8 G8r(lèn
and Arboretum were closed for part of the year in Ilne with govémment restrtcllons. When reth￿On$ were
eased. numbers of visilors wgrè rgslrrcted due to social distancing rule.
There was as a result a small dedine in membership from 3.402 to 3,296 which w8s disappointing, however
there has been an Increase in numbers as restrlctions have eased and we af8 hop8fiJl for a swift ratum to pre-
Covid levels. We look forward to cglgbraling thg 30 anniversary ol the founding of the Friends and the 400
of the Garden.
The Frtends contlnued to provide financial and volunteer SLVPQrt to the Garden. They bengfft from dose
relatlonshlps with Garden and ArtK)retum st8ff and from enthusiastic help from many membeTS.
Durfng the year. a new database has b8an Install￿ whlch makes compliance wth GDPR easier. gives far
mofe llexlbllity in communication with and administration of members and allows the purchase of membershlp
online. It will in due course also allow for bcoking garden visits Drdine. Morer)ver, sgtting it up has invofve(l a
welcome dean-up of our records.
Fund ralslng".
The Friends raise ftjnds from membership subscriptions. vtsits to thlrd paty gard8ns, sp8Gial evènts. legacy
donations and from occasional appeals for specific Garden Projects for which altematlve frjnding is not
availabl8.
During 2019. Ihe Friends launched an appèal to tmprove the paths at the Aiboretum to make this rnore
accessible for all. This appeal was kunched to matk the 400, anniveTsary of the Botanic G8rden. which wlll
be celebrated in 2021. The appeal also supports the Garden and Arborotum wid81 strategy for a vlsitor centre.
To dale the appeal has ratsed £226,866. The target is £750.000. As well as asknng Friends for donations.
applications are being made lo grant making trusts for bJnd5.
The Directors Con￿nUe lo make increasing subscription Incorne a priority. Efforts to recruit at Garden events
and to •ncouragè Friends to introduce new members. either diredy or by gift subscriptions. are being
irtcreased.
Most visits lo other gardens by Membe￿ of The Friends and by the Bobarts Patron Grotsp Wa￿ postponed or
ncelled due to corona virus restriclions, as was th8 May moming and New Colleg8 Opera.
Overthe last 10 yaars. The Friends have raised £2.02m and made grants to the Garden totslling £1.65m.

The main grants wgre for the continuing enhancoment of the plant collections for research, staff professional
development. emergEn¢y paths repairs and iaising awareness about the Arborgtum as well as a programme
of new much admired interpretation at the Botanic Garden and al Ihe Ats)rglum. In addition, a grant was
glven lo fund the costs of the digllal content officar.
Volunteers
In addttlon to the considerable voluntary input to the work of the Friends, volunteers play an Incrgasingty large
role at bolh th8 Garden and ArbO￿t￿M in gardening and other tssks.
Admlnistratlon and Communleatlon:
We have a very happy arKI frLFitfiJl Working relationshsp With the Director, Professor Simon Hisco¢k and have
been pleased and exclled to have been able to support the first stages of his ambitious plans for both the
Botanic Gardgn and Artjoretum. We are planning con￿derable support lor numerous projects in the years to
and beyond the 400 anniversary. To help r8du¢e costs Friends are encouraged to pay by Dlrect Debit and to
receive communications. Including the Newsletters. by email rather than post. Over 82% of Frtends now pay
by Direct Debit and 86% have aulhorised o)mmunication by 8mall, IncludSng the e-bulletin. and have
elected to receive the New$18tters by email. The Friends contlnue tr) benefft from the very considerable
voluntary work of members of Forum and other Friends.
Bonellts to Frtènds:
Friends benefft from the opportunity to join speclalty ￿anISed vlslts. as well as PFiority booking for spedal
ovents and Garden adult edui%tion progiammes. Three Newsletters are sent lo the Friends each year. Whilst
these Newsletters are produced primarily for the Friends, they are also available to the public in hard copy at
the Garden shop and through The Friends, website. Those Frienijs who have registered their email address
with the Garden office receive e-bullelins three limes a year b8twe8n Issues of the Newsletters. The Friends,
website 15 part of the Garden website and continues lo ￿ enhanced. The Frfends also have reciprocal visiting
rigms at certain other UK gardens. The monthly Coffee Momings with Gardèn tours are very popular bul sadly
have had to be susp8nded this year.

Grants totalling £119,571 12020: £132.5091 were made to the Gar(ten. Governance and communication costs
were £43,837 12020: £34.9911. The costs were hSgher as a new datsbase was introduced to manage thè
membership and streamline the administrative pro￿sses. Most of Ihe costs of The Frtends relate to the
production and circulation ofthe Garden Newsletter to Frfends three tknes a year and admlnlstralive supporL

Th& total (x$h held al 28 February 2021 was £458.521 {2020'. £456.4691. Of this amount £148.967 has been
committed to the Gardons and will be spenl in the coming year. In addition. a minimum of £30.000 is
maintained undor the ros9rv8s policy as set out In the next parag¢aph.
Resorv•s pollcy:
It is th8 policy of The Friends lo maintain unreslricled general funds. whlch are the free reserves of the
cvmpany, in exces5 of £30.000 at a51 times. The minimum level of theso reseNes should be available as
accessble cash deposits. This allows The Friends to be able to rospond immediately lo requests by the
Garden for grants in order that the Garden may secure third paty matching fijnds. This minimum level of
unréstsicted funds should also allow all commitments lo be mel in the unlikely event of The Frfend8 ¢easlng lo
exlst. Unrestricted fijnds were malntalned abovè thls level thrwghout the y88r.

The Directors were pleased with the fijndraising appeal for the paths at Ihe Arboretum to support the Gardens
400 anntversary. Wigorous efforts will continue lo be made to increase wnembership incotnè. The Director of
the BotsnS¢ Gafden & ￿b0[et￿rn is very kggn to extend (x)118bor8tion wlth Thè Fri9nd$. Wa believe that the
r8811saUon of present plans and a highef public profite provide opportunities to increase our membership
and incom8. We ar8 working very Closely wtth the Garden staff on ideas to ￿¢rea$9 income from all sources
