Independent Examiner's Statement

I have examined the books and records of the All Saints Chorus

Signed Warren Hoskins Dated 2[nd] July ‘23

Approved by the trustees at the AGM 9[th] July 2024

Notes to the Accounts

The amount we have in the current account at the date of creating these accounts, June 22[nd] 2024 is £ 12585.19 . (we have just paid out for the musicians and soloists for Haydn’s Creation at St Johns, Smith Square) This includes restricted funds for the choir weekend away. We closed the savings account in April ‘22 and transferred the balance to the current account. We have £707 cash.

  1. Subs – During the financial year (23-24) we have had 56 subscriptionpaying choir members, 1 member who supports us but who does not attend choir practice. £7550 of our income derived from subscriptions. Costs include promotion, printing, scores, rent and paying for musicians and soloists for concerts. Membership subscriptions are £180 pa for waged and £75 for unwaged members. Many members pay subscriptions by standing order and most of those are in the Gift Aid scheme. All taxpayers might want to consider donating through Gift Aid , as this is such a valuable source of income.

  2. Donations – were £420 this financial year, some people make a donation with their subscription. Thanks to all who donate either regularly or oneoff.

  3. Gift Aid – We have not applied for Gift Aid for the year 23/24, but it should be in the region of £2000. Fundraising, subscriptions, and all donations are eligible for Gift Aid.

  4. Use Of Rehearsal Space/rent paid to venues, like St Gabriels, St John’s etc West Ham Church irregularly charges us “rent” for using the premises for rehearsals and concerts. This works out at ~£1500 a year.

  1. Internet expenses &website costs are domain name, webspace, accounting software and zoom account.

  2. Sundries includes some office sundries, black folders, microphone and power cable, Sum Up card machine, seat labels, soloists’ gifts like flowers & chocs, disposable cups.

  3. Fundraising: Xmas raffle, quiz night

8. Social : occasional cinema trips

9. Instrument Repair & Maintenance: loudspeaker and amplifier for rehearsals

Overall, All Saints Chorus financial reports are considered enough for the size, complexity, and purpose of the organisation. We have a Financial Control Policy for purposes of secure governance. The treasurer does a report about income and expenditure for committee meetings and trustees can have sight of recent bank statements.

Chair’s report September 2023

Following our eventual performance of Verdi’s Requiem at Southwark Cathedral (twice cancelled due to COVID), the year since our last AGM has been one of consolidation. We are happy to have welcomed new members to the chorus and new volunteers to the committee.

Performances

Our first concert since last year’s AGM was our now traditional Christmas concert , supported and enhanced by the choir from Nelson School – to whom we say thanks for their fantastic performance. Thanks also to all the staff at the school for making it happen – especially to Jo. Having explored and researched new venues, our next major outing was to St Gabriel’s Church (Aldersbrook) to perform Handel’s Messiah . We were made very welcome, and tickets were pretty much sold out, making the concert really exciting. We hope that our upcoming concert in a couple of weeks at the same venue will be equally well received.

Thank you to everyone who contributes to making a success of our concert programme, working behind the scenes, including the committee, choir members and our friends at Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund.

Fundraising

Thank you to everyone who puts efforts into raising funds for the choir, including those who make ad hoc donations over and above subscriptions, including refreshment supplies for concerts and anonymous direct contributions towards concert costs.

The committee will think about some fund raising and social events in the new year that we can all be involved in.

Choir weekend

In January we enjoyed our time at Ashburnham Place for our choir weekend away. Thank you to all those who helped with the organisation of this, especially Fiona who took on the majority of the work for this. We are looking forward to our next visit in the new year with the organisation being taken over by Louise (thank you!).

Committee and ofcers

We usually meet about once per term, sometimes with an additional meeting before an upcoming concert if required. If you are interested in joining the committee, even if you haven’t put your name forward this evening, please let one of us know – you would be welcome.

This year we welcomed Jenny as secretary (rescuing Hilary from the task which she was doing alongside her treasurer role) and have also welcomed some new committee members. Thank you to all the committee – both recent and long-standing members for volunteering their time.

Thanks also to all those who help and volunteer in other ways – on concert days, putting up staging and tidying afterwards, promoting us through advertising and social media and helping to set up for rehearsals.

Our committee members can come and go over time, and the officer roles can be rotated, but we do have one person who never stops and is irreplaceable. Of course, it goes without saying that without Jon – our Director of Music (and teacher, conductor, accompanist, composer in residence) we couldn’t exist.

Musical Directors Report – AGM September 2023

A good year for the choir which has seen both successful concerts and steady growth in membership. Attendance at rehearsals although good, is not consistently high and I hope this can improve this coming year.

Concerts since last November (Verdi Requiem) have been;

Annual Christmas Concert at West Ham. A great fun evening with big audience ably conducted by Jo Cull. Thanks to Hilary for the after concert social.

Messiah in March at St Gabriel’s, Aldersbrook, which was sold out and proved to be a fine venue. Amazing sound from the choir and orchestra with many compliments received.

We are returning there for our next concert on 30[th] September and hope to have another splendid evening.

Next year is a special one for us as we celebrate our 30[th] Anniversary. We are considering the following:

Bach – St John Passion (March).

Spring concert (a lighter concert of popular music)

Summer concert (July) – Haydn’s Creation (Southwark?).

Possible Autumn concert (Oct/Nov) Bach Cantatas/Motets

Christmas concert at West Ham (Dec).

Stage.

We are currently looking at this. We shall try a new seating plan on 30[th] September and also get our rostrum sorted so you can see the conductor better. Ultimately we are looking to replace our stage but we need to consider storage etc. hiring may well be a viable alternative.
