Activities and Achievements during the year:

In 2024 the Group celebrated its 40[th] Anniversary. We celebrated with a group family camp in September and many of the children and their families attended. We had fabulous weather during the weekend and everyone was able to try some of the activities available to us at Fox Covert Scout Campsite. We completed our weekend with a celebratory 3 course meal in the Wilson Building and a fabulous 40[th] Birthday Cake on Sunday morning.

Group Lead Volunteer Report – Christine Peacock

As you will see from the booklet, all sections have had an extremely busy year! I applaud you all for such amazing achievements. Its especially satisfying to see.

I would like to say a big thank you to my amazing leadership team, because without them, none of the magic they bring along each week wouldn’t happen.

As our wonderful group keeps growing, of course, you’ve guessed it…… we do desperately need more team members to join us. Whether you can help once a week, once a month or just once in a blue moon we always have jobs that need to be done. If working with children is not your thing, there are also opportunities to work on our campsite and to help our quartermaster with the equipment store. We are also keen to speak to anyone who would be interested in joining our Trustee Group.

You may have some hobbies or interests that one or more of our sections might be interested to hear about or work in a field of employment that you can share some insights from with the children in our group. This helps our members learn more about the community that we live in and also gives them the opportunity to earn badges.

Thank you to all the parents, carers and other family members for supporting the group and helping the young people to achieve their goals on their scouting journeys.

Squirrel Team Report – Robert Dimbleby

Its been a fantastic year for our Squirrels!

5 moved to Beavers and 9 more are due to move in September. Over 200 badges have been awarded

Squirrels have had an action-packed year filled with fun and learning. Our highlights include:-

Visiting the fire station Taking part in the first ever Hinckley District Squirrel event Played lots of games Learnt some Makaton, looked at digital skills (without screens), looked at healthy lifestyles Got creative with cookie bake at home jars Christmas fun at the Birdie Bunker Golf, climbing, axe throwing, nerf guns Exploring other countries in the world of Scouting Sung songs and celebrated together

A Big Thank you! None of these events would have been possible without our amazing leaders and wonderful parents, grandparents and carers.

Beaver Team Report – Carolyn Lewington

Our Beavers have had a very active and successful 12 months. They completed lots of activities involving craft, cooking, games, team work and personal development. They have camped, made kites, played golf, planted bulbs, had a go at axe throwing (don’t worry, they were only plastic!) and soft archery. Spent lots of time exploring outdoors and learning more about where we live. In September, some of our very first Squirrel Cohort moved up to the Beaver section. They all settled in extremely well. Our Beavers are all working hard towards their Bronze awards with many of those due to move to Cubs in 2025 having now achieved this top award. Our Beavers have displayed courage, commitment, friendship and some impeccable behaviour. We applaud them all for their achievement especially when we have pushed them to think outside the box and taken them outside of their comfort zones. It is an incredibly joyous and rewarding experience to watch them flourish when faced with adversity and to see the joy on their faces when they realise that they ‘can do it’. We love being able to hand out all the badges. Well done to all our Beavers for a successful year.

Thank you also goes to the Beaver Volunteer Team: Sara, Rob, Claire and Gemma who stand side by side with me week in week out to deliver a quality programme of events to the children. They are there through the think and thin and sometimes some particularly tricky or difficult times. In rain, shine, wind and snow, they put on their uniforms and their smiles and get stuck in to whatever needs to be done. Our Beaver Colony thank them for their continued commitment to the team.

Cub Team Report – Emma Markham

Cubs started out the year with a Unihoc Tournament, which they practiced for and learnt how to work as a Team.

Whilst we had dark evenings the Cubs completed their Astronomer Badge, learning about New Constellations, the Moon, our Solar System and how to observe the Sun Safely.

Over 3-4 nights the Cubs worked towards their Navigator L3 badge. They learnt how to read a Map, plan a route and walked 5km’s using compass bearings allowing them to put the theory into practice.

The Cubs spent some time earning their First Aid - L3 badge. They learnt what they needed to do in an emergency, about minor fractures, burns, asthma attacks and how to administer an Epi Pen.

Cubs really enjoyed learning a New Skill when they played Pickleball at the Leisure Centre. They also got green fingers earning their Gardener badge. They planted seeds to take home and nurture, weeded the raised bed at church and helped to tidy the yard.

As the weather warmed up we took the opportunity to spend as much time Outdoors as possible! They did a quiz at Argents Mead to help them learn about the Local area. They also enjoyed Pond Dipping at Burbage Common, looking at all the snails and froglets they caught in their nets and taking care when emptying them into trays so they could look at them properly.

The competitive spirit came out when we went to Foxes to do Go Karting & Axe Throwing and also Hollycroft Park to play Mini Golf & Tennis.

The Cubs also worked really hard towards their Global Issues badge. Learning about recycling and having a competition to see who can recycle the most batteries over the Summer. They also shared their own experiences of Refugees and did really well at thinking about how they would feel if they had to flee their home with only 5 items due to conflict or a disaster.

Scout Team Report - Matt Chawner

The Scouts have been involved in a varying programme this Scouting Year. Attendance has generally been good as all have exhibited a willingness to participate.

Before Christmas, Scouts were involved in creating their Christmas Crafts, playing a number of new indoor games and played some Indoor Crazy Golf in the centre of town. The Section’s behaviour was of a good standard when they attended the Carol Concert at St Mary’s Church.

Scouts were also given the opportunity to paint a model at the local craft shop and race it.

After Christmas, Scouts honed their domestic skills by planning and then cooking a meal.

They spent an Evening learning First Aid and played a new game at the Leisure Centre - Pickleball - which they all enjoyed.

Scouts also spent one Evening Apple Bobbing and using only their mouths, an attempt to take jelly babies out of flour. I am sure there’s still some remnants of flour left in the Church carpet!

At Fox Covert, Scouts had the opportunity to undertake a session of climbing whilst on another, they also checked over the camping equipment to see what could be used on future expeditions.

Recently, Scouts had a chance to ‘dip’ into local history at Argents Mead, by being involved in a Murder Mystery - that had a Cluedo element to it - by deducing who the Murderer was from a series of clues related to local historical people.

Recently, due to the continued hot weather, Scouts were involved in an enthralling Canoeing session - one where many swam from the canoes to the local shore.

For next year, having already designed their Bug Hotel, one aim will be to construct it from varying materials.
