Introductlon
The COVID-19 pandemic was again a hy fartor in whatTurnerf5 House could plan arKI achieve in
2021. The lockdown and ot￿r restrictions meant that the House could not re-open to the publi¢
until May, and even then. limited numbers of vlsitors were perniitted at first. Despite these
difficulties, our staff and volunteers did a magntficent job in stsgiro our exhlbition Tumerfs English
Ccosts., welcom1￿ visitors to a series of iftnovatNe specTral events and v*wing opportunitiès at the
House including showcasing the work of our Art￿ in ResIde￿e. Continued support from Local
Governmènt vrds cru¢ial to our continued operation. W• would also like to thank the huge rdnge of
supporters. donor4 artists. and mernbers of the local cornrnunity who were generou5 With their
time, Money and expertise and enabled us to another successful ￿ar.

The alm of Turnerfs House Trust IS to con5eNe and present J.M.W. Turnerfs architectural vision and
ori8inal design for a srnall country retreat to bp. used by himself and his fathei. Tumer des¢ned the
House and occupied it from 1813 for some thirteen year5, entertaining many of his friends there.
The TfU5t fulfils Its objective through maintaining the restored House and opening it to the public as
Vfsitor attraction. By doing so Turnerfs House Trust Seeks to celebrate J.M.W. Turnees artistic

Trust aims to build a deeper engagement with Tun*r a5 an artist.
Publk beneftt: The Trustee5 confinn that they have had due regard to the Chalfty Commission'5

serrfices that we offer accessible to all. and to deli￿ring a range of education and Outreach
actbvlties. A sustainable operation will ernsure that the ber*fits will continue in future.
Turnerfs House opened to the public in July 2017 after a consemtion progrnmme which rèstored
the House and garden to a stste as close as p055ible to how It vns in Tumerfs time. Thls was fundèd
by a grant from the National Lottery HeritiEe Furnl and by ot￿rgenerouS donors.
A fvrther grant from the National Lottery Her•ta8e Fund was awarded in 2019 under the Resilient
Heritage programme wsth the aim of helping Turnerfs House to develop its business plan and buikl
a Strategy for financial sustainability. This enabkd the Board to work with consultancies to plan for
a sustalnable future for the House. This project was completed in the summer of 2020 and provided
a clear business plan, a comprehenslve fundraisin8 Strategy and an understanding of options for
uti1Ssiro the grounds of the House and increasing the InVo￿eMer￿ of ourvolur*teer5.
In 2021 we wekomed I￿0 visttor5, a signifftant reduction on 5,300 in 2020 due to the continued
impact of COVID-19 %vith the house ¢losed for the first four and a half months. However. visitor
feedback remains very positlve thanks to the work of our volunteers and staff with 98% of visitors
stating that they are very likely or likely to recommend us to family and frieru15 vA)I1 e 84% rated
theirvislt to Turnerf5 House as excellent. We expanded our retail merchandise offering during the
year with a wider rdnge of attractNe iterns and were able to increase sales per vI￿r $0 supporting
the upkeep of the House. Whilst many people may not have been able to visrt ￿rKlY¢Ombe Lodge
in pèrson. we welcomed approximate￿ 1500 attendees across our online Sandycombe Years,
Friends and Circles tslks.
2021 Exhlbltlon: This yearf5 exhibition. Tumerfs Engltsh Coosts. opened in May 2021 after several
delays due to COVID-19 restrictions. The exhibition, which comprised 11 works lent by Tats Britaln,
wa5 expertly curated on a "pro bono" basis by Dr alristine Ridin& Head of Curdtortal at The
National Gallery. We are very appreciative of Dr Ridirfs support We were delighted to welcom•
Andrew Marr, presenter of rnany TV and radio show5 IDcludlry"The WorAI's Greatest Pairtinrf to
declare the exhibition officially open. The exhibition Pro￿ very popular with visitors ar•d was
favourably reviewed in the rnedia. We are very 8ratefvl to kxal sdicitOTS Stone Rowe Brewer and
the lighthouse authority Trinity House for their een&rous spon50r5hip of the exhibition.

1021 Events prograrnrne and ow Artlst In Resldence: With House cl¢>sed by the lockdown until
mld-may, we had to turn to inrK>vatr¥e ways of bringi￿ Turner to the people. In April we moved
o¥r planned series of lectures entitled Yhe SarKlycombe Year< online- this proved a huge success
as many rnore people participated than could have been accommodated at an-in person" event-
an audience of nearly 350 people participated from across the United Kingdom and indeed from
across the world. Turnerfs House vras also arno￿ the plor*rs of the Tharnes LuMi￿rieS lecture
series. This very succe55hJl online initiative involved us in a new collaboration with IT￿nY histori
houses of south-west London. &%ain, hundreds of rr*mbers of the public tuned in, and the
proceeds {rec•lv•d through voluntary donations) were shared arnon8 the partlcipatlng h•stOTIc
houses and went sorne wdy to makirq up for the loss of revenue Cal￿ed by the bckdown. We plan
to continue with online lectures and presentation5 in addition to.in person" events as these enable
us to reach a wider and rrK>re diverse audien

audience and a series of gin, win• and champagne tastings in the House were expertly presented by
a local business, St Margarevs Wines.
Once again. we welcomed an Artist in Residence. Anna pate￿)n. from the Royal Academy School,
created a series of fascinatin8 paintings and small watercolours that wère inspired by Turnerfs own
work and exhibited at strategK polnts aromd the Hous¢. They were much admired by visitors. We
are gRteful to the Charlotte Bonham4rter Charitsble Trust and the AstorTrust for supporting our
Artist in Residence progfamme. Anna's artwork was unveiled at the House at an event attended by
Turnerfs House Circles mernbers. Later in the year Anna joined us at a Breakfast Networking Event
attended by local busines5e5. Duri￿ the year. wsih our Léarni￿ ar￿ Volunteers Officer, She led
three workshop5 for bcalprimary xhools.
We were delighted to welcome thè MP forTwickenham. Munlra Wllson, to the Housè in August.
The enthusiastic support of our local MPS and kxal councillors for the work of House and bts
role in the commuftity is greatly appfteiated.
We are grateful to our patrons, Lord Egremont. Professor Ken Howard and Rebecca Salter PRA, for
their continued sUPPOrt. Our I￿nOrary patron. Catherine Parry-wingfield, who Ivas the drivii
force behind the restoration of the House. wa5 awarded the BEM in the 2021 New Yearfs Honours
in recognltion of her *YJrk.
Learning Prograrmbe: Turnerfs House Trust remain5 ¢ornmitted to outreach into the local
community. Our Learning prOgramn￿ was again affected by COVID-19 b¢rt our Learning and
Volunteers Officer was able to adapt the programme so that nearly all of It took place despite the
restrictions. The pro8fdmme of outreach to IcKal sth001s achieved in fvll, with the involvement
of fpie primary schools and 260 chlldren e￿aged In a Key Strge 2 art project. The main
modlfication from the oreinal plan was that the children were unable to visit the House and the

a¢tivitie5 had to take place at the schools. Feedback from both teachers and pupils vrds excellent,
although some pupils commeTrted that t￿ were looklThk fOr￿drd to being able to vlslt the House ID
person. whi¢h we hope will be rnuch easier in the comir¢ ￿ar.
Our Wel￿￿l￿g programme, cro*Yl fvnded via The By Give ChrT5tma5 aHllenge, was also a great
success. This programrne aims to alleviate loneliness and isolation for the elderly and adults with
mental health problem5 through group workshop& AKdin. we had to adapt the programme and
many activittes tch)k place online or a￿4V from the House. We mède great efforts to ensure that the
sessions remained indusive and accessible. and many participants benefited from learnin8 how to
ac¢ess onlim events for the first time. aients of Age UK enjoyed receiviro Your Turn with Turne
art actwity pa¢k5 and tskirY4 part Sn dis¢u$5ions about art arKI were also able to participate in a fae
to-face session with our Artist in Residence. This programme built on the pilot run in 2020 arKI
participants wefe able to learn new skills and develop Creatv￿lty in a safe and supportive
environment. Sessions run for frAIND were extremely well attended, with participants enjoying
sessions on art arKI on growing plants, In both cases with Turner-relatsd themes. Participants
beneffted from leamine and creatine together 50 prornotino well-being. In rospon5e to a request
from MIND, we wer• able to run additional art sessions in the autumn. ITh D￿eMber we successfully
raised further funds thrO￿h The Bi8 Give Christmas Challe￿e which help us to continue our well-
being pro8ramrne in 2022.
We believe that the opportullity to learn aboutTurner and his art should have no age hmit. We
put on special events for families wtth children at the House duriro the year- includingTvmer
inspired art Wofkshops and events explorirvd Georgian and Wictorian Christmas traditions through
the rnaking of 19th century-style decorations and cards usin8 natural materials. We rnn a fi¥
session adult watercolour painti￿ COUTSe led IyTtm Wright (who taught fimothy Spall to paint for
the Mr Turnerfilrn) arKI we held "ltrpersoD" and online painting w)rkshop5 led by Marc A Turner.
Volunteers:Turnerfs House relres on the support of volurteeTs"and the House could not operate
without them. They help to steward and manage the House. keep the garden looking beautiful* glve
uided tour5 tc visitors, assist at events prthiide administrative and specialist services and support
the Tru5Ys aims and activities. Our voluntser5 contributed arourHI 2,300 hours of support to
Turnerfs House Trust during the year arml were especially supportive duringthe Tumerfs English
Coasts exhibition. We have a tearn of 50 active volunteers. and although their numbers have
slightly reduced over ihe past year, their range of skills and their commitment have increased. W•
im to increase the diversity of the volunteers ar￿ are particularly pleased to welcorne new
members including students and your* people.
Frlends dTurnerfs House= The Friends are an important part of Tumerfs House Trust and. at the
end of December. have 215 membeT& In 2021 they held a 2(x)m 5prinE lecture and an in-person
autumn lecture. Their AGM. held via Z¢)om. was followed by a shDrt tslk. In June they organised
their'Tumerin Twickenhom, prize for art students at Ri¢hrMrKI upon Thames College arKI in
Dècember they held a Christmas Cake & Coffèe Morning whi¢h in¢luded the sale of bea￿tIful
wreath5 that had been made by rnèrnbers and the committee. During the year Friènds aave
£6.000 to the Trust.

Fundralslng and SuppNL. The cornmltment of our Supporte￿ is a key elemert in the Success of
Turr*rfs House. In addition to the Friends. we have three tiers of membership.. our Patron< Clrcle.
Sandycombe Circle arffl Supporters Circle. each with disti￿tIVe beneffts and opportunities. Despite
the lockdown and restrictions, our supporters were able to enjoy three exclusive Zoom
"conversations" with expert curators and historians and three"in-person" events. Circle members
also had exclusNe "speclal evenf access to the Exhibition. We were pleased to welcorne new Circle
member5. We plan to maintain the mix of virtual and in person e￿lusive events in 2022 thereby
enabling members from further afield to participate in our ardes community.

strategic review sought to ascertain how best to manage Tumerfs House as a sustainable museum.
During 2021 we pr(yressed several key initiative5 that were identified in that rwiew.
We wére delighted to introduce six nèw intèrprètstitin pane15 Into the House and garden-the
artwork was created by local designer Paul Warrh)8ton on a pro bono basis and the making of the
panels was fvnded by a grant from Ri¢hmond upon Thame5 Council arwj a private donation.
An archite¢t4ed review helped us to realise the rnu*urn's potential of utilising a piece of neglected
land that we own immediately adja¢ent to our rnain garden. In 2021 we succeeded in getting
plannlng perrntssion for a supplementsry pedestrian efttran￿ from St MaroarÈYs Road that wlll
BNe visitor5 a more welcoming approach to Sandycombe Lodge with a view kjoking up to the house
throu8h the 8arden. The landscaping and COnstr￿tion will take place mid-2022. There will be
small booth to wekome visttors. issue tickets and be a place of rest for our volunteers and a
boardwalk to pmide safe access to Sandycombe Lod￿. We ￿11 transfomi this ne8lerted area

Turnerfs House Trust aims to celebrate J.M.W. Turnerfs artistic achieve￿Ent through encouraging
visitor5 to discoverthe house he designed and built, ar#1 the Thames landscape which inspired him.
Through conseThirvd and interpreting Turnerf5 House. the Trust aims to build a deeper engagernent
with Turner as an arts5t. Key to being able to achieve the Trusvs alllls is the need to becom?
financially sustairtable.
The Trust continues to focus on the strategic plan5 ¢reated from its major project "Pathwoy to
sustainabili￿ which VRS supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund Resilient Heritage
progrdmme. The projert concluded in mid-2020 and therefore t￿ Trust is tsk1￿ important steps to
adapt its execution of the strategy to the evofvir¥ COVID-19 environment.

and profitsble events that wlll enable a broader audience to enjoy Turnerfs Plouse and ereage with
the artist who designed and lived there. developing a Marketing strdtegy to promote ourvisitor

Structure. 8o¥emance and managerntrt
The Board of Trustees are responsible forthe overall direction and leadershlp of charfty. The
Board may consist of up to fifteen directovs, who are Its Trustees for the purpose5 of charFty law. At
31 December 2021 there were ten Trustees. Followirva two ret1￿MentS on 31 December 2021 and
apwintments on l and 17 January 2022 there are tèn TNstee& One third of the Trustee5 retire by
rotat￿Tr each year with those IoTV5t in Offi￿ retiri￿ fir5L Retiring Trustees are eligible ft>r re-

During 2021 there were chan8es within the T￿￿tee bcxly the r•tirement of fourTrustees and
the appointment of new trustees in January 2022. The Tntst is appreciative of t
expertise and supp¢)rt given by its retiring Trustees arKI V￿l¢ome5 its new Trustee
The Trust continuès to provide all nèwly appointed Trustees thrfth an Induction whlch includes
relevaftt inforrnation such as the Trusys constitulion and Its poI￿le8 guxlance on the role a￿1
responsibility of a tn￿tee as well as strategk. financial and historical I contextual Inforniètkjn about
the Trust. The recruitment of a new Chair is ongoinE. In the meantirne, the role of the Chair
continues to be managed bythe VictrcF￿Ir with support from fellow Trustees.
In 2021. the Trustees met forn)ally seven times including for a strategy workshop in NO￿rnber as
well as attending ad hoc meetiw as needed. DurlnE 2021 the House was managed by the House
Dlrector who was responsible for the operational management of the Trust and who was also
trustee. There were three sub-committees of Tn￿e$. the House Manaeement Cornmit
coverin8 property and operational matters, ColWion5 and Nominations Committees. The two
members of staff on fixed4erm contracts were the House Director and the Leaming arKI Volunteers
Officer.
Looking ahead to 2021 after reviewirwa the management of the House, the trustees of Turnerfs
House are Working on an enhartced stsffin8 StnKture with the alm of irnprovi￿ the sustsinabllity of
the house Includir¥ the visitor exper5ence. This is expectèd to Incl￿1@ a part-time House/Museurn
Dirertor. an Operations mar￿er and the Leaming and Volunteers Officer.
