|Statement confirming whether the
trustees have had regard to the
guidance issued by the Charity
Commission on public benefit|Para 1.18|_The charity trustees are aware of the guidance_
_and have taken it into account when making a_
_decision to which the guidance is relevant_|

|Policy on grant making|Para 1.38|_Current policy is to grant former beneficiaries_
_funds to upgrade their qualification, i.e., go_
_from certificate in midwifery to diploma. Once_
_completed, this raises salary of beneficiary by_
_£45 a month, a not inconsiderable sum which_
_enables the beneficiary to build her (or his)_
_assets and support more brothers and sisters in_
_education, a multiplier effect of our work._|

## **Achievements and Performance**

||SORP reference||
|---|---|---|
|Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.|Para 1.20|_We currently have about 20 beneficiaries_
_on scholarships. These are young people_
_in their late 20s and early 30s who we_
_established as needy and funded for_
_courses previously under The Mvule Trust_
_as long as ten years ago._
_We are going area by area in Uganda_
_where we gave our large numbers of_
_scholarships earlier, and tracing and_
_identifying those who used the opportunity_
_well, and need an “upgrade”._
_This is hope-inspiring for these young_
_people, who are models for others and now_
_get a chance to go to a higher level of_
_qualification, which means, especially if_
_they are in government employment, that_
_their salary increases and they can take on_
_higher roles, like a midwife become head of_
_a small rural health unit._
_This not an age group that gets attention,_
_yet they economically support their own_
_children, their siblings and their parents._
_The benefits radiate outwards far beyond_
_the individual beneficiary._
_The difference the charity has made to the_
_beneficiaries is to recognize their hard_
_effort since they previously obtained a_
_qualification funded by us, and to offer_
_them a chance to go to a new level through_
_a programme where they study while still_
_keeping their job (they obtain study leave)._
_This increases their self-esteem and their_
_standing as a person of worth in the_
_community._
_As for wider benefits for society, we have_
_heavily documented in our tracer study of_
_432 students that beneficiaries that qualify_
_from a course support on average four_
_siblings in education._
(**These days are for those who are educated |**
**African Arguments)**
_As for the benefit for wider society, many_
_global studies show that the benefits of_
_education include having smaller and_
_healthier families. Our beneficiaries clearly_
_follow this trend._
_Our beneficiaries make a tremendous_
_contribution as foresters, teachers, nurses,_
_game guards, agriculturalists, social_
_workers, and in other professions including_
_business management. Even if they are not_
_in formal employment, they get ‘chances’_
_due to being educated, including episodic_
_work such as census taker or health_
_campaigns._|

## **Additional information (optional)** You may choose to include further statements where relevant about:

|Achievements against
objectives set|Para 1.41|_The cost of upgrading from a certificate to a_
_diploma in nursing, for example, is£1166, a_
_cost completely beyond the means of our_
_demographic. Yet this is an investment that_
_we can make that pays itself back multiple_
_times over socially and economically._
_We look forward to reaching further areas_
_of Uganda. In 2021 we held meetings with_
_former beneficiaries in the areas along the_
_border with DR Congo._
_As a result of the visits, Mvule beneficiaries_
_are now linked up in WhatsApp groups and_
_share job opportunities with each other._
_This building of social capital is a sign that_
_we have partially achieved our vision of a_
_‘cadre of young people who are educated_
_and self-confident’._
_Finally, beneficiaries say that we helped_
_’break the belief that if you educate girls,_
_you waste your money’. This was also_
_important to us with our objective of_
_benefiting 75% girls._|

|Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held|Para 1.22|_Reserves are held to cover costs of_
_banking, and administration. They are also_
_needed for grants required to be dispersed_
_in a timely fashion_|

|The charity’s principal
sources of funds (including
any fundraising)|Para 1.47|_The principal sources of funds are_
_donations from individuals_|
|---|---|---|
|Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted|Para 1.46|_No further statements_|
|A description of the principal
risks facing the charity|Para 1.46|_The principal risk to our charity is that we_
_need to be able to operate largely remotely_
_with one physical verification trip a year. If_
_this were not possible (insecurity or break_
_down of internet so we can no longer_
_transfer fees to colleges, for example) then_
_we would lose touch with our beneficiaries._
_Additional risks:_
_1. Lack of formal employment is a risk_
_to the model of our charity. To_
_counter this, former beneficiaries_
_have asked for start-up capital for_
_businesses. This is another model_
_entirely and would be an additional_
_risk. We have declined it._
_2. Larger risks such as climate_
_change, natural disasters,_
_displacement and epidemics and_
_pandemics such were very much in_
_evidence in western Uganda on our_
_trip in 2021, including landslides and_
_overspill of the war in Eastern DR_
_Congo. Re COVID, schools were_
_closed for two full years in Uganda._|

_However, as educated members of their community, our former beneficiaries are better equipped than those who acquired less education, and are often called upon to take part in relief efforts. No further statements_ Other
