Charitable purposes:

Our mission is to advance the mental, physical and spiritual welfare of young people through to the elderly of the African Caribbean Community in Luton and surrounding areas by developing a lasting and sustainable infrastructure. We promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of the inhabitants of Luton and surrounding areas, with a preference for those of African and Caribbean origin to advance their education and training.

Activities:

ACCDF supported the local African and Caribbean community to engage with public bodies through our range of community development and social justice activities. We collaborated to address gaps and barriers in education, wellbeing, social and cultural provision through our advocacy, advice, information. We have mentored a range of fledgling community groups to partner for increased capacity. Our range of cultural events have linked communities with mainstream providers to help reduce marginalisation and isolation, improve self-esteem, build good relationships and create better outcomes for grassroot organisations and individuals from African and Caribbean backgrounds. In carrying out our activities, we have had regard for the Charity Commissions public benefit guidance.

ACCDF managed and delivered Luton’s fifth annual Windrush Civic Flag Raising event on June 22, 2024, at the Town Hall in partnership with our mentees from United Luton Caribbean and African Committee (ULCAC), supported by Luton Council and sponsored by Luton Rising. The community event, honoured local Windrush generation and pioneers, and featured cultural stalls, steel pan music, and "best dressed Windrush" prizes. Two-minute silence was observed, with a keynote address delivered by Steve Stephenson MBE with historical information about Luton’s Windrush pioneers. The event also featured talent from Watford and North Hertfordshire's neighbouring Windrush organisations.

2

Action For Race Equality (ARE) Windrush Casework

ACCDF delivered two years of casework to enable those affected by the Windrush scandal to regularise their British status and claim compensation for impacts and losses as a result of not being able to prove their British citizenship. This advocacy was crucial to help restore claimants’ documentation and support them to be compensated for losses and impacts, such as being unable to work, travel and access healthcare.

Dementia Advocacy Support

ACCDF supported a Dementia Awareness event in Bedford where 65 people attended. Information was given by a range of statutory and community Dementia Services. We worked with the organiser to follow up the needs of carers who attended the event. The Luton project is a result of that pilot. We have seen the cultural gap and a growing need for advocacy support for carers. We found that a small intervention of advocacy support went a long way to alleviating anxiety and stress levels in the carer we supported. The funding supported us to take this work forward to deliver workshops in Luton and expand to introduce a Carers Hub and visits for Advocacy support.
