COPE Annual Report 2020-2021
Due to the coronavirus pandemic COPE was unable to hold any outings or social events, But your trustees and volunteers in spite of restrictions were able to keep the office in operation. Moreover, the bi-monthly Newsletter was able to be produced and distributed to all members and the general public. Thanks to the Minuteman Press, the Newsletter was printed and posted to all those receiving the hard copy and Mailchimp ensured those members computer-savvy received it electronically. Thanks must also go to all those who provided articles and to Nick who ensured it was electronically produced and the mailing lists and web-site were updated on a regular basis. We ensured that the Newsletter not only contained articles of interest, but also keeping members up to date with coronavirus restrictions and avoiding scams.
In spite of being locked in the US due to coronavirus restrictions, trustee Deborah ensured that Talking Together got off to a flying start and together with Administrator Sally ensured there were three successful sessions. Each session had six discussion groups of 6 to 8 participants, the discussions varying from art and literature, music and poetry, local history and the environment and nutrition. It is planned to expand Talking Together to four sessions a year. Because it connects everyone by telephone there were no problems of the project with the coronavirus restrictions.
With the office being manned weekday mornings by trustees and volunteers, COPE ensured it kept in touch with its members by phoning as many as possible to ensure they were alright. Unfortunately, we were unable to contact many members due to the phone numbers being changed, so we urge all COPE members to ensure we have their up to date phone number.
We must thank all the trustees and volunteers who manned the office and ensured members were kept in touch. We must also thank those organisations who provided funds to ensure we were able to produce the bi-monthly Newsletter (Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council and South Cambs District Council) and hold Talking Together sessions (Cambridge City Council, Cambridgeshire Community Foundation and The Evelyn Foundation). Many thanks must also go to those COPE members whose donations ensure we can continue to operate.
All our present Committee Members are willing to stand for re-election and we have a new volunteer willing to stand for election, Andrew Holmes. We are grateful to him and the existing committee members for standing for another year. Unfortunately, our auditor, Mike Arnold, has resigned, so we are looking for a new auditor. Fortunately, we have several persons who have expressed interest.
Obviously over the year we have lost many members, but equally we have
gained many new members so that our membership numbers are maintained at approx 2,500. With membership now possible via the web-site we have members joining from not only the County but also the rest of the world with one membership application from Iraq.
Above all, we send our heartfelt condolences to all those Families of members who lost their lives during this difficult year.
