Shpresa I'hope, in Albanian) is a dynamic, user-led chaTiiy lounded in 21x12 by Albanian-speaking
asylum-s¢¢king women. Shpresa works to emtK)wer and uplift ihe AlbanIan-S￿aklng community
('ASC') and. more recenily. oiher migrani communities across the Uniied Kingdom. Shpresa'5
holistic approach addresses immediate needs while building long-ierni resilience, leadership and
illlegralion.

operdted from sinc¢ 2(K)7. Despite seibacks. ￿n0VaIl0￿ work has be¢n done during 2024-2025 thanks
io pro bono coniribuiions from communily led c(Mnpanies and funding from SeTewfix and the
CloihwoTkers Foundation. The goal is io have a fully accessible communiiy cenire and S￿la1 housing
units on the lop flix)r. The communiiy centre is planned to be opened by Sep￿￿ter 2025, while 1]

communltles we serve. Rooted in lived experience and local knowledge, we nurture and support
individua15 to step into leadership roles that drive real change. By offering training. rnentorship. and
opportunities to lead organising and campaigning efforts. we empower people who have
traditionally been excluded from decision•makI￿ to tske the lead. The centre acts as a hub for
grassroots action, where issues are identified by the community. solutions are co-created. and
collective power is built to challenge inequality and injustice.
Achievements- Free Bus Travd for asylwn seekers
In February last year. in partnership wilh Cilizens UK and other Organisations. Shpr¢sa slartd the
rirsi aciion 10 secure Free Bus Travel for asylum seekers. This campaign w&$ followed by severydl
actsons and meetings wilh key ￿Ople.
Asylum seekers across LrndTh) receive on average £8.86 a week io cover all expcn5es iKyond food
and accommdation. kn is laid oui in Ihe Helen Bamber Foundation's report. bus ￿aVe1 in London is
Iherefore unaffordable for people seeking asylum as one return bus journey cosis them 40% of iheir
weekly allowa￿e.

seekers wilh beticr access io Iravel concession& such as those for un4kr 18s and over 605. by Ihe end
ot 2025.

speaking communiiy. reaching oui to oiher migrani and minoriiy gr{￿pS facing similar barriers. This
evolulion reflects Shpresa's ethos: inclusive. communily-led and res￿nSive to those in need.

Shpresa's staff, volunteers and supponers. In a year of Continued ehalleAges, Iheir passion and hard

passed away in February 2025. leaving a profound void in all our lives.
Luljeia founded Shpresa Programme in 2CK12. and dedicaied her life io championing Ihe righis,
inclusion and ern￿WerMent of (he A]banian-sFaking community in the Uniied Kirngdom. As the
heart and swl of the organisaiion, she worked iirelessly io ensure ihai dignity. integraiion and
opportunity were at the forefronl of everything shc did A vi5i0llary leadcr. Luliela bclieved in
ini¢graii¢M with dignily, noL assimilaiion. Through soclal entr¢w¢n¢urship and communiiy organising.
she creaied pathways for migranis and r¢fugees io ¢￿inbUl¢ meaningfully io socieiy. Her
commitment to juslice. empoweTment and collethive action shar￿d the lives of countless individuals.
L￿ljell was more than a CEO: she was a mother io ihis community. a fierce protedor of Shwesa's
people and a source of endless warmih. c(￿r￿ge and hotK. Her passion for ju￿Ice and her deep love
for th¢ A1baTrian-s￿akIng community inspired everything she did. She Iwili Shpresa not jusl as an
organisa11(￿ but as a family. a place where peO￿e could feel seen. heard and valued.
Her siren¥h in ihe of adversTiy was remarkable. Even during her illness, Luljeia's spirir shone
brighily. She never stopped iKlieving in wwer of community and ihe poiential within every

The weekly Worncn's Suppm Groups welcomed 83 women who We￿ lth)king not jusi for help but
also for communily. They shared stories. SUp￿r[ed ￿ch other and formed friendships ihat weni far
yond Ih05e m¢¢ting roorns. One woman told us. Tr friendships I made here helped me iljrough
some of my harthsl days.- Thal's the kind of impact that ¢an't be nKasured I￿1 ￿a￿S everything.

Mental healih has been a huge r(xus. Through awarenes5 sessions and small group work. We Can
cre*ed safe Spaces whcrc womcrt could thlk openly. feel understood and sian io heal. Our
Psyehoeducational Menthl Healih Groups helped 14 women build emolional resillence and tske steps
ioward recovery.

This year hasn't been easy. We've Se￿ heartwing stories, young people ￿-trafFICkeA1. children
with karning difficulties Eting hidden and abused and victims chained up in cannabis farnis. At the
same lime. we've watched the system grow colder. In 2(Y23. over 8(X) Albanians granted
proteciion. In 2024. Ihat number drop￿1 io just 69.
The message I￿Ing sent is that Albanian asylum seekers don't mater. That message has devastating
effects, including stripping Y￿n8 people of hope. worsening iheir menthl health making them
more vulnernble 10 exploitation. In many cLses. li puts them ri8ht b￿k in ihe hands of trdffickers.

been Shpresa's way of making ihai belief a Tealiiy. otfering Albanian-speaking wc*))en a safe space ro
grow. conneci. rebuild their lives.
Over the past year. Ihis projeci has supported 94 women ihrough five weekly suP￿)ll groups held in
different venues such &s Frenford Club in Redbridge. Mansfield House. The Alternalive5 in Newham
and online via Zoom. Each of (l*se sp&&$ has become nx)re than jusi a weekly meeiing, it has
become a lifeline.
Many of the wThnen the proiea supp)rts face hug¢ barriers. including languase dI￿l¢u111cs, trauma
and fear of being judged or misunderstO(Ml. They often arrkve in the United Kingdom with liitle
knowledge of the system and even kss suNx)n. Th¢y may be navigatiThg compl¢x immigration
processes, raising children on Their own or coping Wilh poveny. domestic violence, depression or
aJ)xieiy. Some are survivors of Irafficking or abuse. Oihers live in temporary accommodation, such as
hotels wilh no means (o prep9ft a wam) meal and being forced to eai what is provided.
Through one-l0v￿e advice and adVoC￿Y. this project supp)rted 208 women aJKI their family
members with issues such as immigration, domeslic violence. mental healih. homelessness and access
io benefits. Shpresa walked alon8sid¢ ihem ihrough some of iheir dark¢si days, ensuring ihey weren'i
left to face those C1￿17engcS alone. shp￿s3's s(aff folliwed up wonally with each woman, making
sure that they rettiyed the ri8hi su[qx￿. resowces and pmieciion.
One woman told us. "l aTn grdteful io you and the volunteer that 5upp￿rted me. I felt I could rely on
her and was noi lei down. I know l am very vulnerable and have I￿$ of needs. l appreciatr yo

can see my lile pul in order now, and I look forward with hope, surrounded by gocmj friends who care
for me."
