Structure, governance and management
Governing document
The trust is an unincorporated trust, constituted under a trust deed dated 18 OCTOBER 2003 and is a registered charity, number 1110650.
Governance and structure
St Thomas Indian Orthodox Church, Liverpool, is a parish affiliated with and constituted by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, also known as the Indian Orthodox Church, which was founded in India by St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Church is led by His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, the successor to the Apostolic Throne of St. Thomas.
Our parish comes under the direct episcopal authority of H.G. Abraham Mar Stephanos, Metropolitan of the Diocese of UK, Europe, and Africa, which functions under the guidance of the Holy Episcopal Synod of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. During this reporting year, Rev. Fr. Happy Jacob, our Vicar, led the parish with dedication in both spiritual and administrative matters which helped in the growth and development of the parish community.

Parish Administration and Meetings
The General Body Meeting held on 30th June 2024 (GB2024–2025/01) approved the budget for the budget year 2024–2025, as presented by the Hon. Treasurer, Mr. Aji Paul George. The Half-Yearly General Body Meeting, convened on 10th November 2024, reviewed and discussed the half-yearly financial accounts.

Structure, governance and management (continued)
Over the course of the reporting year, the General Body met four times, and the Managing Committee met ten times to plan and coordinate the parish’s day-to-day activities. The sincere cooperation, dedication, and hard work of the parishioners and committee members have performed a vital role in the spiritual and administrative growth of the church.
Objectives and activities
Objectives of the Charity
Charity's objectives are to provide a cultural religious and socio-religious base for the Indian Orthodox Community in the Merseyslde, Warrington and Chester area. In setting our objectives, and planning our activities, we have given careful consideration to Charity Commission's guidelines on public benefit.
Church Activities
Apostolic Visit of the Supreme Head of the Church & Inauguration of Parish Chronicle
We were blessed and honoured by the apostolic visit of His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, the Supreme Head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, to St Thomas Indian Orthodox Church, Liverpool on 24th & 25th May 2024.
We also gathered for Evening Prayer (Sandhya Namaskaram) on Saturday 24th May 2024 as part of the spiritual program for the occasion. The following day 25th May 2024, we were blessed to celebrate the Holy Qurbana.
Public Meeting
A public meeting was organized in conjunction with the Apostolic Visit of His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, Catholicos of the East, and Malankara Metropolitan. The event was attended by 350 participants, who also took part in the Holy Qurbana. During the ministerial visit of His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, our church had the honour of presenting the official deeds and legal documents to His Holiness. Also, during this historic occasion, the inaugural ceremony of the parish chronicle, “Chronikkoon”, was held. The chronicle was released in both printed and digital formats, with the digital version available as an online flipbook. This dual release marked a significant milestone in the life of our parish.
This memorable visit was a moment of immense spiritual joy and pride for our entire community. We express our heartfelt gratitude to His Holiness for his gracious presence, prayers, and blessings. The meeting was blessed by the presence of the following dignitaries:

The following activities were held aiming towards the achievement of the said objectives.
Worship and Pastoral Care
Regular Liturgical Services
The Holy Qurbana is celebrated every Sunday, beginning with Morning Prayer at 8:00 AM, followed by the Holy Qurbana at 9:00 AM. Refreshments are served after the service, providing a time for fellowship and community interaction. In addition, Holy Qurbana in English is conducted on the fourth Sunday of every month, offering spiritual nourishment especially for our younger generation.

Holy Week Service
Rev Fr Happy Jacob conducted Passion Week Services. We were blessed with evening prayers at church, and everyone had the opportunity for Holy Confession.
Liverpool Convention
We had the blessing of celebrating our Parish Convention on the 12th of October 2024. The event was led by Rev. Fr. Binel Raj, who guided us with inspiring messages and profound insights drawn from the Word of God. We are grateful to Rev. Fr. Binel Raj for his time, dedication, and spiritual guidance during this Convention.
Harvest Festival
The Harvest Festival was celebrated on the 13th of October 2024. It was a fruitful and colourful event, and everyone have witnessed a wonderful cultural programme. We are grateful to all our parish members for their generous contributions, which helped raise £12,000 towards the needs of our church. The youth also played an active role by organising a successful raffle.
Christmas Celebrations & Feast of St Thomas (Perunnal)
Our church celebrated the Christmas carol singing & nativity play by Sunday school children on 14th December 2024.
Feast of St Thomas, our Patron Saint was celebrated on 15th December 2024. Holy Qurbana followed by Procession (Raasa), Benediction and Nercha Vilambu. (Perunnal feast)
Carol Service - House Visit
This year, Christmas carol house visits were conducted through our parish prayer groups across four days: 7th ,14th ,15th, and 21st December 2024. These visits brought joy, spiritual fellowship, and festive cheer to our homes, strengthening the bonds within our church community. We are thankful for the enthusiastic participation and hospitality shown by our parish families. As part of this cherished tradition, every household visited received a Christmas card and a festive cake, spreading joy and the spirit of giving. Through these visits, we were able to raise approximately £5,000, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed and supported this meaningful tradition.

Christmas Service (Yeldo Perunnal)
Our parish joyfully gathered on the evening of 24th December 2024 at 6:00 PM to celebrate Christmas Service. Following the service, we enjoyed a fellowship gathering with refreshments, providing an opportunity for everyone to connect and celebrate together.
New Year Service
The church had New Year Service Holy Qurbana on New Years Eve 31st December 2024 at 7.30 pm. It was a blessed time of reflection and hope as we gathered as a parish family to seek God’s guidance for the year ahead. Following the service, all attendees were warmly invited to enjoy tea and cake, fostering a sense of fellowship and joy as we stepped into 2025 together.
Parish Day
We have celebrated our parish day on 2nd February 2024 which have been coordinated by Mr. Anzy Skaria. All the spiritual organisations have presented their annual reports. Parish members have conducted various programmes, followed by prize distribution for Sunday School Children & MMVS. Youth has organised a raffle ticket. MMVS has organized snacks for the evening.
Events
Charity Projects
On 6th October 2024, OCYM generously donated £438 to support patients requiring stem cell therapy through DKMS.
Picnic
A joyful one-day picnic was organised by Mr. Anzy Skaria on 24th August 2024 to Anglesey (Beaumaris), Wales. The outing was well attended, with eighty-two members participating and enjoying a wonderful day of fellowship and relaxation.
Onam
We have celebrated Onam at our church on 15th September 2024 following the Holy Qurbana, featuring a delicious traditional Onam Sadhya. The event was attended by 250 members, and we were blessed by the presence of H.G. Abraham Mar Stephanos Metropolitan. Our sincere thanks go to the coordinator Mr. Anzy Skariah, whose dedicated efforts made the Onam celebration a great success.
Health Awareness talk
Following the Holy Qurbana on 2nd March 2024, a health awareness talk on heart health was delivered by Dr. Mohammed Meah, MBChB, MRCP, PhD, a Cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. The session provided valuable insights into cardiovascular health and disease prevention, enriching the participants’ understanding of heart issues, their causes, and preventive strategies.
Diocesan Events
No Diocesan events took place in our church during the period from 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.
Cover Collection
Every year, we send contributions for the Diocese, Catholicate Day, Sunday School, Seminary, and Mission Sunday. These annual contributions reflect our commitment to nurturing the church’s spiritual, educational, and missionary efforts, ensuring that the work of the church continues to flourish.
Spiritual Organisation
Sunday School
Sunday School classes were held every Sunday following the Holy Qurbana, with 110 students enrolled from Reception through Year 12. We extend our sincere gratitude to Head Teacher Mrs. Blessy Shajan and the team of 22 dedicated teachers for their tireless efforts in guiding and nurturing our children through religious, educational, and spiritual growth activities. annually and sent to the Diocese to support wider church initiatives.
Our teachers actively participated in continuous development, attending zonal teachers’ meetings and zonal general meetings. Additionally, 6 Sunday School teachers represented our parish at the Sunday School Teachers Conference held on 30th April 2024 at St Mary’s Indian Orthodox Church, Bristol. The Church-level Talent Competition was held on 21st April 2024, coordinated by Mrs. Leni Anil and Mrs Surya Anup. Our children actively participated, showcasing their talents. The Sunday School teachers played a vital role in organizing and supporting the event, contributing significantly to its success. During Harvest Festival, Sunday School children who won in the talent competitions were awarded with trophies, recognizing their dedication and enthusiasm. Our parish was represented by many children at the North Zone competition and our Sunday school children have made us all proud by winning second place overall at the North Zone Competition. We had also participants for Diocesan-level competition. The Orthodox Vacation Bible School (OVBS) took place from 31st October to 3rd November 2024, coordinated by Mrs. Leni Anil, Mrs Surya Anup, and Mr. Anzy Skaria. A total of 82 children attended, “Seeds to Fruits”. We express our heartfelt thanks to the coordinators, teachers, volunteers, and generous contributors whose support made the event a remarkable success.
Sunday school is delighted to share the news of our Sunday School children’s success - 11 children have passed the Year 10 Sunday School Exam, and 2 children have passed the Year 12 Sunday School Exam. Let’s give thanks to God for their achievements and continue to encourage them as they grow in faith.
OCYM Activities
We have 60 OCYM members in our church and they are active in worships and other church activities. We would like to thank all the members of youth movement for their countless efforts and hard work. We would also like to express our gratitude to Youth Vice President Mr. Rijo John Mathew, Youth Secretary Mr. Elwin Laison & Treasurer Mr. Jonathen Sunil for their hard work and coordination during 2024 -2025. OCYM actively involves in all church events like Parish Day, Harvest Festival, Picnic, Christmas, Carol rounds and Christmas singing. Nine members attended the Youth Camp at Colomendy, Wales on 14th October 2024
The OCYM played a significant role in supporting charitable initiatives during the year. On 6th October 2024, OCYM actively participated in organizing a stem cell donor registration drive to raise awareness and funds for DKMS, a global organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. In addition, with this initiative, OCYM also hosted a Charity Food Festival, which brought the community together in fellowship and generosity. The amount collected, £438, was donated to support treatment for patients requiring stem cell therapy.
MMVS
Throughout the year, the MMVS has consistently conducted monthly prayer meetings on the last Friday of each month at the church. Additionally, meetings were held every Sunday after the Holy Qurbana under the spiritual guidance of Rev. Fr. Happy Jacob. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Achen for his spiritual leadership. We also appreciate the tireless efforts of Mrs. Elizabeth Biju, who has played a vital role in coordinating and supporting the activities of the MMVS. In the spirit of fellowship and growth, sixteen members attended the North Zone Conference on 16th June 2024 in St George IOC, Manchester. Four members participated in the Annual MMVS Conference held at St. Stephens Indian Orthodox Church, Birmingham on 19th October 2024.
We are proud to report that 11 MMVS members took part in the MMVS exam on 16th November 2024. Among them, Mrs. Saly Koshy secured first prize & Mrs Mercy Mathew secured third prize in the PreSuper Senior category. Mrs. Elizabeth Biju won third prize in the Senior category. Jinu Thomas John secured third prize in the Junior category at the Diocesan level. MMVS exam participants and winners were recognized with shields for their achievements on Harvest festival day. Their dedication to spiritual learning and commitment to growth in faith is truly inspiring.

AMOSS Liverpool
We are blessed to have 24 dedicated altar boys who faithfully serve at the altar and carry out their assigned duties with commitment. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Linz Aiynattu for his excellent coordination of the altar servers. We also express our sincere gratitude to our Vicar, Rev. Fr. Happy Jacob, for his ongoing guidance and spiritual support to these young servants. Additionally, eight members from AMOSS attended the Annual AMOSS Conference held at St. Stephens Indian Orthodox Church, Birmingham on 19th October 2024.
Entrance to the Madbaha: On 26th May 2024, six children from our parish were blessed to enter the Holy Altar (Madbaha) as part of their altar service initiation. The service was led by His Holiness Moran Mar Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, who offered prayers and blessings for the children as they began their journey in serving at the holy altar. It was a spiritually significant moment for the children, their families, and the entire parish.We kindly request the prayers and support of every parish member for all our future altar services. We are also deeply grateful to the parents who take the initiative to bring their children to participate in the Holy Qurbana, nurturing their faith from an early age.
Church Choir
Our church choir plays a vital role in our spiritual worship by actively participating in every Holy Qurbana and enriching the spiritual experience through their dedicated involvement.

Birthday & Wedding Anniversary
Every week during the Holy Qurbana, all church members’ birthdays and wedding anniversaries are remembered in prayer. The priest offers special blessings and good wishes during the service. Additionally, birthday and wedding anniversary cards are sent to members’ homes as a token of our parish’s care and fellowship.

Felicitation
Silver Jubilee of Priesthood: The parish joyfully celebrated the 25th anniversary of priesthood ordination (Silver Jubilee) of Rev. Fr. Happy Jacob on 15th September 2024, following the Holy Qurbana. The celebratory Holy Qurbana was led by His Grace Abraham Mar Stephanos, who graced the occasion as the chief celebrant. It was a blessed and memorable event, honouring the dedicated spiritual service of Achen over the past 25 years. The parish extends its heartfelt congratulations and prayers for his continued ministry.
Our Church proudly acknowledges and appreciates every year the achievements of students completing their GCSEs, A Levels, and University Graduations, including Sunday School students in Year 10 and Year 12.
Financial review
The charity's principal funding source is from donations and collections of £108,756 (2024: £116,633). Overheads remained fairly consistent.
Reserve policy
It is policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds at a level which equates to approximately twelve months unrestricted expenditure. This provides sufficient funds to cover management and administration and support costs.
Conclusion & Word of thanks
Let me first thank Almighty God for granting me the opportunity to serve as the Secretary of this blessed Parish. I express my sincere gratitude to our Diocesan Metropolitan, H.G. Abraham Mar Stephanos, our Parish Vicar, Rev. Fr. Happy Jacob, Hon. Treasurer Mr. Aji Paul George, all Committee members, and every parishioner for their unwavering support and guidance throughout my tenure.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly thank all who have supported me during this year. May the intercessions and prayers of Saint Mary, our Patron Saint Thomas, Saint George, and all the Saints guide our Parish and lead us to greater spiritual heights in the future.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of St. Thomas Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Church ('the charity') for the year ended 31 March 2025.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of the charity, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
