## Report of the Trustees
## for the Year Ended 31 March 2021
The trustees present their financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2021.
The organisation has been in existence since 1996 but registered with the Charity Commission on 15 July 2005. The constitution of the charity was adopted on 7 June 2005.
## **Principal Activities**
The principal activity is the provision in the interest of social welfare facilities for the recreation and leisure time occupation of disadvantaged young people with the objects of improving their lives.
Sporting Foundation ( SF) organised thwee following projects and activities:
## **1. Sporting Bengal United FC**
Sporting Bengal FC is the representative side of SF. It recruits from the community and gives opportunity to local players to play at the highest level. Its main purpose is to challenge the under-representation of Asian footballers in mainstream football. Sporting Bengal was the first of two Asian teams to play in the FA Cup in 2005. The team currently plays in the Essex Senior Football and takes part in the annual UK Asian Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.
## **2. Summer League**
The Summer League is a pioneering project and one of the first Summer Leagues in the country. The league started in 1997 with 8 teams and at its peak had 46 teams competing in 4 divisions, with over 1000 people taking part every week from May to August every year. The main aim of the Summer League was and still is to provide diversionary activities for local young people during the holiday period as many were getting into anti-social behaviour, petty crime, drugs and vandalism. It was also to unify the community and bring the young people together as there were high incidents of gang violence between the different estates. Today young people look forward to the Summer League and have taken positions of responsibility as coaches, managers and secretaries of their teams. In 2020, the league had 32 teams competing in 3 divisions with approximately 1000 players from 37 different nationalities participating in the league.
## **3. Tower Hamlets Youth League (THYL)**
SF continues to deliver the only youth league in the borough. The league attracts 25-35 teams in the winter and summer leagues, and enables 300-350 children to participate in organised affiliated football during the whole year. The league keeps young people engaged in positive activities and away from anti-social behaviour and crime. The league enables children to improve their confidence and self-esteem. It enables them stay fit and healthy and develops their leadership and personal skills.
## **4. Sporting Bengal Football Academy (SBFA)**
With the support of the only Bangladeshi ex-professional football player Anwar Uddin, SF set up the SBFA for 6-16 year olds in Tower Hamlets. The aim of the academy is to nurture young talents so they have a chance to play professional football. However, it is an opportunity for all children to play sport, stay active and develop their personal and social skills. In 2020/2021 season, we had over 75 children registered and had 4 teams playing in the East London & Essex Junior League.
## **5. Community Football League (CFL)**

The CFL winter league commenced in 2013/2014 season to provide opportunity to young people & adults across East London to play affiliated league football. It also wanted to reduce the administration burden on teams and organised pitch booking and referees on their behalf. It took away the need to plan and travel to different venues every week by having the league in one venue - Wanstead Flats in Newham. Also, for the first time there were 3 officials for every match. This greatly improved the quality of the match and playing experience. Following from the success, 2020/2021 was the eighth season for the league. The league is maturing every year.
## **6. Football Tournaments**
SF delivered a series of football tournaments for children, young people, adults and veterans in 2020/21 season. It ranged from 7-a-side football for children, young people and veterans and 11-a-side for adults. The football tournaments were themed as " Anti-Knife Crime " . Highlighting the issues of knife crime amongst young people in particular.
## **8. Annual Awards Ceremony**
Every year a gala presentation ceremony is held to recognise the personal achievement and sporting excellence of young people from the different SF projects. It is important that young people are rewarded for their hard work and effort. Community workers and volunteers are also rewarded for their commitment and time given to the community. The 2020 Awards Ceremony was deferred due to the onset of COVID-19.
## **9. Youth Engagement & Community Programmes**
SF delivered various projects engaging young people from our many football projects into our capacity building projects i.e. volunteering, training courses, workshops and employment support. SF also undertook community event days based around Estates in the Borough - bringing people together from all backgrounds and enhancing community cohesion. SF also undertook various Estate based multi-sport projects. Successful safeguarding projects were undertaken during this year.
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
## **Funds in surplus**
The charity received grants and donations totalling £181,123 (2020: £169,756). After payments of outgoing expenses totalling £104,235 (2020: £168,867), the charity was left with a surplus of £76,888 (2020: £889) for the year.
## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**
## **Governing document**
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.

## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Sporting Foundation**
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Sporting Foundation (the Trust) for the year ended 31 March 2021.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
