The Society
The Crowthorne Symphony Orchestra (the Society) is a Registered Charity No. 1110231 and conforms to the Charities Act and the rules and requirements of the Charity Commission. The address of the Society is 31 Windle Close, Windlesham, Surrey GU20 6DZ. The Society is a small charity and as such is not registered at Companies House, however, the Society has owned the company CSO Productions Ltd. (no. 11566037) for tax purposes since 2018, through which all rehearsal and concert expenses are paid.
The Orchestra was founded in 1991 as the Crowthorne Chamber Orchestra, following a history as a local college evening class extending back to the early 1970’s. It became the Crowthorne Orchestra in 2000, and was renamed the Crowthorne Symphony Orchestra in 2008. The Orchestra was formally registered as a charity on 27 June 2005. We celebrated its 30[th] anniversary in 2022 (delayed because of the pandemic).
Trustees
The Trustees during the period 2024/25 have been the Chairman, Mr Adam Lloyd; ViceChairman, Mrs Kat Hatton; Secretary, Mrs Debbie Moll; Treasurer, Mr Martin Leech (all Officers); and Mrs Ann Bradford, Mr Charles Vereker, Mrs Chris Gadsby, Mrs Sandy Godfrey, Ms Hilly Beavan and Mrs Katie Hepworth. The Trustees would collectively like to thank our Musical Director Mr Robert Roscoe, and our Leader Mr Mike Jessop, for their invaluable contribution to the success of the Orchestra.
Management
A new Constitution was adopted on 9 May 2005 and remains in force. It details that the Society shall be administered by a Committee consisting of the following Officers: a Chairman, a ViceChairman, a Secretary, and a Treasurer; and not less than two and no more than six ordinary members. The Committee members are all Trustees of the Society. The Musical Director and Leader of the Orchestra are ex-officio members of the Committee. The Committee may co-opt new members as necessary. It holds sufficient minuted meetings each year to ensure the smooth running of the Society, the quorum for which is least one third of the number of Committee members, or three, whichever is the greater. Minutes are available to Society members on request.
Objectives and Activities
The Objects of the Orchestra are “to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of orchestral music in all its aspects by the presentation of public orchestral concerts”. For many years, it has performed 4 concerts annually in the Crowthorne area, but since November 2023 three of these concerts have been held in neighbouring Wokingham. New members are encouraged to join the Orchestra, providing them the opportunity to play challenging programmes in a friendly environment. The Society runs workshops separate from regular rehearsals from time to time.
Financial governance
An Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held within 12 weeks of the end of the financial year, which is on 31 August. Members are notified in writing at least two weeks in advance. The financial accounts are audited or examined to the extent required by legislation or, if there is no such requirement, scrutinised by a person who is independent of the Committee, and submitted to the members in advance of the Annual General Meeting.
Subscriptions may be charged as needed at a rate the Committee will recommend at a General
Meeting. Separate bank accounts are held in the name of the Society and of CSO Productions Ltd. Online payments from the Charity account are authorised by two Officers. The Society may receive donations and grants. Concert tickets are offered for sale to the public.
All income and property of the Society is applied solely towards promoting the objectives of the Society as above and no portion is paid or transferred directly or indirectly to any member of the Society except in payment of legitimate expenses incurred on behalf of the Society.
All fixed assets less than £250 are expensed through the Charity income and expenditure account, whilst others are recorded at historic cost and depreciated over their useful lives.
The Treasurer maintains a record of all income and expenditure and shall present the examined accounts at a General Meeting or any other time on reasonable request.
Financial review
The Society has continued to benefit significantly from Orchestra Tax Relief and Gift Aid claims, and also from an increase in ticket income from concerts in 2024/25 to the highest level ever.
As noted in the Charity accounts, the Society recorded an income of £26,969 and a surplus of £1141. The net Current Assets of the Society at the year-end were £5999.
Total grant income was £1900, comprising £1000 from Wokingham Town Council, £500 from Crowthorne Parish Council, and £400 from the Bliss Trust. Gift Aid claimed was £2105 (2023/24) and Orchestra Tax Relief received via CSO Productions Ltd. was £5886 (2023/24).
Total Current Reserves (including those in the Production company) at 31 August 2025 amounted to £7093. This level was achieved largely through the Society’s success in selling tickets, additional subscription revenue, attracting grant income and the continuation of the 50% Orchestral Tax Relief rate (Note: from 1 April 2025 this dropped to 45%).
Following an unavoidable move to a larger and more expensive rehearsal venue this year, the Committee obtained approval from members at the October 2024 AGM to increase subscriptions from £50 to £62 per term from January 2025. In addition, the Committee agreed to increase adult ticket prices from £15 (£13 for early purchase), to £17 (£14).
The Society’s Fixed (capital) Assets consist of a set of 34 staging platforms purchased in batches since 2014. The net value of these fixed assets held by the Society stood at £6571 on 31 August 2025. A modest income was made from hiring out this staging this year.
Review of activities for the financial year
The Orchestra performed four concerts during the year, all of which were both financial and musical successes. They took place at our new concert venue - All Saint’s Church in Wokingham - except for our Christmas Concert at St John the Baptist Church in Crowthorne.
Our Autumn Concert on November 2024 comprised the Arnold English Dances, Gibbs Moon Garden, the Jacques Ibert Flute Concerto (with our own Camille Curtis as soloist), Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, and the Colour Symphony by Bliss.
We performed our regular Christmas Concert in December 2024 at St John the Baptist Church, Crowthorne with a popular collection of seasonal carols and music.
In March 2025, we performed the Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Weber by Hindemith, Britten’s Symphonic Suite from Gloriana and his Soirées Musicales, followed by the SaintSaëns Symphony No. 3 ('Organ'), with David Pether as organist.
For our ‘American’ Summer Concert in July 2025, we presented the Gershwin Piano Concerto with guest soloist Daniel King Smith, the John Adams Chairman Dances, Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. That concert finished with the popular Rodeo by Aaron Copland.
A successful String Workshop also took place in May 2025.

Independent Examiners Report
I report to the trustees on my examination of the above accounts. As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
• the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Independent Examiners Report
I report to the trustees on my examination of the above accounts. As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.�
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
• the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
