The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives, policies and organisation

The Aletheia Foundation, registered charity no 1110096 (formerly True Vision Foundation) was founded in 2009 by Brian Woods, Deborah Shipley and Jezza Neumann, producers and Directors of True Vision Productions.

True Vision Productions has an extensive track record producing Emmy, BAFTA and Grierson award-winning films for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and HBO with a special interest in giving a voice to young people and socially disadvantaged groups. We have a reputation for combining journalistic rigor with sensitively made programming, often working with vulnerable individuals involved in a variety of difficult circumstances.

Because of this, we understand that our films can ignite passions in our viewers who may want to help the people featured in the films or help the cause we are highlighting. When donations can be channelled through existing NGOs, we direct our audience straight to these organisations, however, there have been many occasions where no charities are working in the particular area where we have highlighted an issue, or there are compelling reasons why we cannot make direct links to organisations on the ground.

Historically, we would grow charities out of the films that were made, such as - COCOA, Care of China's Orphaned and Abandoned, The Orphans of Nkandla Trust and The Campaign for Bulgaria's Abandoned Children. When we realised that films had the power to raise awareness and support for social issues and injustice, we decided that instead of repeatedly creating new bespoke charities, we would launch The Aletheia Foundation so that anyone who wished to help the people featured in our films would be able to, safely in the knowledge that their donations would help those individuals and the causes directly.

We continue to work closely with charities that support the wider issues raised by our films, and always seek to direct viewers to these charities if they wish to help people in similar situations to those depicted in the films. The Foundation is for those viewers who are keen to help the individuals featured in our films, and provides a more transparent and accountable system for channelling such offers of help than the more informal process of money being sent to the production company and where there is no other charitable vehicle through which assistance can reach contributors.

Organisation

The Board: There are currently five Trustees forming the Board,

They are all non-salaried: Mr Brian Woods (Chair), Jezza Neumann, Kate van Koten, Anna Hall and Nicky Wimble. Two of the Trustees are completely independent of True Vision, in order to establish clear blue water between True Vision and the Foundation, and ensure transparency and accountability.

Office Staff

The Trust employs two part-time staff; Klaire Harris, Foundation Manager and Sharon Thompson, Administrator. This report was completed by Klaire Harris.

Zimbabwe's Forgotten Children Report August 2020 - September 2021

FEEDING PROGRAMME

Severe hunger and malnutrition are a very real concern for families and children in the remote rural areas of Zimbabwe, especially during severe weather conditions such as long-term drought. The economic and political crises, 90% unemployment and Covid-19 restrictions mean half the population have plunged further into a "hunger catastrophe" according to the UN.

Children couldn't come to school to get food - so we took the food to them!

Over 5,000 children received a highly nutritious porridge based mahewu drink, every day at home.

For the first time we were able to provide food for over 1,000 babies and toddlers.

Coronavirus restrictions made it much harder for parents to access food for their families.

In January, tonnes of food arrived in Chinhoyi, destined for the schools in the Makonde District. Our staff and the driver waited 2 days for torrential rain to stop as the dirt roads out to the schools were blocked with buses that were stuck in the mud. It then took them 2 days to get to the first school as they had to dig themselves out of the mud several times, with the truck slipping and sliding along the roads, which turned into rivers!

It was definitely a village team effort getting the food to the schools as when the rain stopped for a bit, people came with their cattle and scotch carts to transport the food to the school so that parents and guardians could collect it. The school heads and teachers were waiting for "Covid protocol" well organized. Peter and the Heads also tried to talk with the most vulnerable families and the elderly to make sure they are surviving ok. As you can imagine the beneficiaries rely very heavily on our monthly mahewu deliveries as its the only considered nutrition their children receive, without it, malnutrition would be much higher than it already is in the area. They always send emotional messages of gratitude to all of the donors.

Schools in Zimbabwe returned on 22 March, however with Covid restrictions on food handling, we will continue giving out the bags of food until its safe to start serving in school again. We thank RUFF'S KITCHENS, WTMD, PAF, SAM and all who donate for making the food deliveries possible.

We got to know the elderly batter in our school communities and managed to deliver maize, soya and mahewu to more than 2,000 grandparents. We believe many would not have survived through 2020 without this intervention.

REDEARTH TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME

Before lockdown our Redearth rural schoolteachers received their third training module on "Teaching & Learning Strategies" to manage large classes. They have one more module to complete their training.

Our training partners, Redearth Education use a rigorous teacher training process, which has shown to contribute positively to pupil engagement and academic progress. Most importantly - it is designed to meet the needs of the teachers and pupils in a Zimbabwean context. The training is experienced bases and builds the capacity of Zimbabwean rural teachers (ie. teachers in remote, often hard to reach destitute areas, with no access to support) to better understand how to support children's learning in very challenging circumstances, especially large classes with NO books or learning aids!

A rural teacher empowerment and pupil motivation is at an all-time high. The Redearth teacher training programme has provided our Zimbabwean teachers with the knowledge, practice, and creativity to turn the most basic shelter into a wonderfully stimulating learning environment.

Teachers welcome the children into class each day and have group activities ready for them to kick off a stimulating day - using materials found in the local environment, like maize sacks, plastic bottles, clay, pebbles and cardboard.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Rather than being simply a transfer of knowledge and facts, today's education must foster creativity, problem solving and interpersonal skills. It must instil a desire for lifelong learning, producing a population of empowered,mindful and competent citizens who can help transform the world. (Credit: Redearth Education).

The teachers are trained using a range of teaching and learning strategies which include group work, partner talk and role-play. Positive methods of behavior management (some teachers still used corporal punishment) which encourages, and rewards pupils are taught including the importance of gender equality.

CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE

70 farmers received conservation agriculture training and inputs this year. Since this programme began more than 300 families have become completely self-reliant and do not require food aid from us anymore. This number is growing fast!

GROWING UP POOR IN AMERICA

Early in 2020, it was estimated that almost 12 million children in America were living in poverty and that more than on in six lived in food-insecure households.

Then came the Coronavirus.

The film Growing Up Poor was filmed by our Trustee Jezza Newman and released in September 2020. The film followed the lives of three families. Rebecca and her 2 daughters, Crystal and her 3 children and Fantasy and her 2 daughters.

The film brought in enough money to be able to pay for the basic luxuries that these families had never had before. Laptops, clothes and school trips, household bills and food.

The donations from this film were not longstanding and only continued for 3 months after it was released. In this time, we arranged the transfer of all the donations to each of the families and in turn, changing their lives for the better.

KIDS IN CAMPS - KENYA

Grace, Anne and Family

We are still in contact with Anna, John and Amos even though the Comic Relief grant came to an end in June 2020. We are able to send them a small monthly income to help them to buy some food and also occasionally help with school fees.

The children are doing very well in school and Grace is in her 2nd year of university.

Each of the children are still in school full time but Grace is now arranging the school fees for them.

The Aletheia Foundation has been covering Grace's siblings' family school fees and related essentials, such as books and uniforms. There are still a lot that they are lacking that the 32 ksh that is sent every month cannot cover. Grace explained that Kenya is getting very expensive, and she has to really try to cut it down to a very small budget that is not really a comfortable living. They have been living on a basic diet of githeri (mixed bean dish), ugali (maize flour mash) and sugary tea. Variations to this diet seem rare and they said that often they will only eat one meal a day, usually in the evening. There is of course no room in their budget for an emergency of any sort, particularly medical.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES TB - RETURN OF THE PLAGUE

Nokubegha: The Foundation paid for Nokubegha to be able to rent a room and stay local to her school. She has recently lost this accommodation due to the landlord passing away and his family taking ownership back of the property. Brian has agreed to send extra money each month for the bus fare that is now required for her to be able to get forwards and backwards to school. Every few months she will let us know about the extra personal items that she may need. We then go ahead and purchase these items for her.

Nokubegha is due to finish school this year and hopes to be able to go to university - examination results pending.

We are able to pay her annual school fees, books and send money for exams, food and personal items.

THE SLUMDOG CHILDREN OF MUMBAI

We continue to send Deepa and her family a small sum every month, which is increased each year due to a rise in inflation, this money is used as a support for the family.

Deepa is now 18, married and has had a healthy baby son.

Deepa's house was destroyed in a flood and The Foundation sent £2,000 to rebuild this for her family. Shobna has not been keeping that well, she is getting older, and we need to help her financially so that she is able to get the medication that she requires. We continue to support her and Deepa's younger siblings.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Principal funding sources

Income from 1st September 2020 - 31st August 2021 enabled the Aletheia Foundation to make grants totalling £97,785 with management and administration costs at £8,385. There is currently £61,058 held at the bank, which will be released over the coming years to support the children throughout their childhood.

Throughout the year under review, the Aletheia Foundation is confident it has significantly helped the children who appeared in their films towards a brighter and better future and will continue to do so.

The Trust's Foundation Manager, Klaire Harris works several hours a week according to need and maintains the Foundation's relationship with donors and beneficiaries; she looks after fundraising, social media and event management. Sharon Thompson is responsible for overseeing the administration of Zimbabwe's Forgotten Children's on the ground in Zimbabwe, she also looks after fundraising and all social media for the Zimbabwe's Forgotten Children.

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes an unincorporated charity.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of The Aletheia Foundation

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of The Aletheia Foundation (the Trust) for the year ended 31 August 2021.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the financial statements

The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.

2. TRUSTEES' REMUNERATION AND BENEFITS

There were no trustees' remuneration or other benefits for the year ended 31 August 2021 nor for the year ended 31 August 2020.
