The evening made such an impact, and created such positive feedback, that the founder members of Descendants (Margaret Noel, Collette Noel, Chantel Noel, Celestina Uzoka, Lorraine Neckles, Helen Manufor and Kisha Noel) held a meeting to look into the development of a sustainable cultural group. Further research demonstrated that there was a definite need for this type of group. After another successful meeting with the group, Descendants was established in September 1993, for children of African and Caribbean descent. In 1993, the Rt Hon. Mr Paul Boateng was approached and agreed to become our Patron. Mrs Connie Mark became our second Patron in 1998. Dr John Roberts Q.C (the first black judge in England) became our third Patron. He played an active role in the organisation and supported the achievement award, which were re-named in his honour prior to his passing. The Achievement Award Ceremony is now in its 18[th] year. ## **Focus** At Descendants we focus on African and Caribbean culture. We explore history and we experiment with arts, craft, music, drama, and dance. We also mark significant times in world history with celebrations, plays, exhibitions and events. ## **We aim to encourage our children and young people who attend Descendants to:** - Develop a sense of pride in their abilities - Develop self-confidence, with a ‘Can do attitude’ - Develop knowledge of their history and ancestry - Appreciate the wealth of achievements accomplished by their ancestors - Celebrate the achievements of positive role models in the community today - Play their part in developing the community ## **Mission Statement** Descendants’ main aims are: - To create an environment where children and young people, primarily but not exclusively of African and Caribbean descent, aged 4-18 years, can learn together to appreciate each other’s cultures and traditions. - To instil in them a sense of identity and to develop a true sense of pride in their heritage - To engage with children, young people and parents - To engage with schools on aspects of heritage, culture and black history - To develop partnerships with organisations that work directly with children of African and Caribbean descent. - To establish and develop links with the wider community - To establish links with Africa and the Caribbean. **3** Descendants Charity Inspiring the Children and young people since 1993, 29 years. ## **Descendants 28th Annual General Meeting 2021-2022** - To counteract, as far as possible, negative images of the black community portrayed by the media, by promoting our achievements and positive achievements. - Telling the forgotten stories, and promoting the wealth of accomplishments of black People who have led the way! Descendants took 25 children, 15 parents and 13 committee members and volunteers to Paxton House for a 3-day trip where the children and young people took part in a variety of workshops, African Drumming, Carnival Headpieces, African Dancing, Scottish Country Dancing and a tour of Paxton House. ## **Descendants Worker** Descendants had its first paid worker who started during lockdown 2019, the coordinator continued to raise the profile of Descendants, supported the delivery of online projects, school assemblies and community engagement to develop knowledge of African and Caribbean history through art, dance, poetry and dance. The coordinator has now moved on to a new job, the whole Descendants family wish Benjamin all the best in his new role. We are now looking for 2 people to fill the roles for an Administrator and a Development Worker. Please look at Descendant’s website and Ealing Council for further details. The 17[th] Dr John Roberts CBE, Q.C Achievement Awards Descendants held the 17th Dr John Roberts CBE QC Achievements Awards on Saturday 2nd July 2022 this was in person at Doubletree Hilton Ealing Common. We had more nominations from more schools, than in the previous 2 years. I love reading through the nominations from schools, especially those schools that take the time to give a full background and really explain why their young person is being nominated. The feedback from the children and parents reinforces the importance of hosting the achievement awards, for the children and parents to hear the great achievements being made by African and Caribbean children in the Ealing Borough. ## _**Chair Denise with Marcus Gail, Brentford Ambassador at AAC**_ We are already planning the 18th Dr John Roberts CBE, Q.C Achievement Awards, which will be part of Descendants 30th Anniversary celebrations. **6** Descendants Charity Inspiring the Children and young people since 1993, 29 years. ## **Descendants 28th Annual General Meeting 2021-2022** Parents/guardians please ask your school in January who they have nominated for The Dr John Roberts CBE, Q.C Achievement Awards. We need to tackle schools from all sides, as there are still a few schools who have not nominated any child for one of the 7 categories. Are those schools saying that there are no children of African and Caribbean descent worthy of being nominated?? What’s next Descendants celebrates its 30th Anniversary in 2023, we have a whole year of monthly activities planned to celebrate our 30th Anniversary, please keep an eye on the Descendants website for more information. ## **Right & Wrong** "Just because something is trendy and popular does not make it good, or right, or beneficial. Use that strength to benefit not only yourself, but even those who oppose you." ## **Jamal Edwards (MBE) - 1990-2022** ## **Denise Charles** **7** Descendants Charity Inspiring the Children and young people since 1993, 29 years. ## **Descendants 28th Annual General Meeting 2021-2022** ## **Education Report 2022** 2021- 2022 has been another bumper year of activities and projects for Descendants. The year began in September 21 with the Legacy Series project in the Friday cultural enrichment and history sessions and the launch of Descendants Excel Club. In series 1 of the Legacy series, the young people began to explore ‘The Caribbean Now’, the rich diversity of the land and its people, in the region and the various cultural influences that go into making the contemporary Caribbean. In series two, our focus turned to Africa and the rich diversity of cultures in that continent. The children learnt about some amazing kings and queens and some great ancient civilisations of Africa. In series three we explored the history of the Caribbean and how the variety of cultures came to be there now. This included the children learning about many things including slavery, the transatlantic slave trade, revolts and rebellions as well as about some of our Caribbean heroes. All of the teaching was to show that the people from Africa were strong and brave as they had come from great heritage. During the whole series opportunities to consolidate things being learnt in school were added where appropriate, including sorting activities, chart and graph reading, reading, comprehension and presentation skills. Opportunities for cooking, listening to music from various regions in Africa as well as looking at their influence in the Caribbean region were also utilised, as well as museum visits and lessons from visiting specialist teachers in art and dance . This teaching ran alongside our project done in association with the Paxton House Trust in Scotland, in which the children learnt about the history of the former owners of Paxton house and their involvement in the slave trade. They learnt about Fedon’s rebellion and some of the people who lived by force, on the estate. They produced art pieces, poems and stories to express their feelings and understanding of the legacy series and express the great pride they felt in the knowledge that the African people who were taken fought tirelessly for their freedom. These can now be seen on display as part of the permanent exhibition in a dedicated room in Paxton House to acknowledge the houses’ role in the slave trade. The projects both culminated in a weekend celebratory trip to Scotland where the children and their families got to meet with children from Scotland and view their work on display in the permanent exhibition. The weekend included the children partaking in African dance, **8** Descendants Charity Inspiring the Children and young people since 1993, 29 years. ## **Descendants 28th Annual General Meeting 2021-2022** Scottish dancing, carnival costume making African drumming as well as getting a tour of the house. It was attended by Sir Geoff Palmer, who was also the special guest speaker. This academic year we have kicked off our sessions with a new topic entitled ‘Who Inspires Me?’, in which the children have learnt about a number of Black, British inspirational people. They have also had the chance to meet, find out about and ask questions to, several inspirational young black people including, a firefighter, a doctor, a pilot, a designer and a Hollywood actor, all of whom (bar the firefighter), were born and educated in the Ealing borough, most of whom are Descendants Alumni. It has been a great experience for the children who have been inspired to consider a variety of professions and produced motivational, aspirational posters to help them to aim higher. This year we will also be looking at the black contribution to the world wars, the black contribution to film, as well as preparing to celebrate our 30[th] Anniversary. As always, our sessions have been attended by children in person and online, with children joining from as far as South Africa, Guyana, Shropshire, Hertfordshire, Gloucester and Bristol. 2021 has also seen the launch of the Descendants Excel Club, a midweek in-person program of activities aimed at supporting children with maths, English and science. It has been very well received and attended by families in the local community. It has become quite apparent that there is a definite need for this kind of supplementary education in the local community. As always, our sessions are run by volunteers who kindly give up their time to ensure the next generation get the best start in life. We would like to appeal to anyone who thinks they may like to volunteer at either our midweek or Friday sessions to put themselves forward to help with this most rewarding role. ## **Report prepared by Chantel Noel on behalf of the Descendants Education Team** **9** Descendants Charity Inspiring the Children and young people since 1993, 29 years. ## **Descendants 28th Annual General Meeting 2021-2022** ## **Secretary’s Report** For the past three years, I volunteered as a Descendants committee member and secretary. Since then, I have remained fully committed to the charity whose 30[th] anniversary is dawning. This landmark is an exciting time for everyone, particularly pioneering members, Margaret NoelFounder, Celestina Uzoka and Elaine Beresford. What a milestone to behold! Descendants’ 30 years of community and charitable services to children in the borough of Ealing, wider and globally will be celebrated with infectious optimism. As a result of the pandemic, Descendants instigated online sessions. The **Friday Clubs** have promoted participation and developed community links. I am pleased about the knowledge children have gained of history, arts and dance. Descendants provides inspirational opportunities for children. In April 2022, **The Excel Club** for homework, revision or additional learning support was expedited. Ahead of monthly meetings, minutes are written, edited then circulated to committee members. I can confidently report that transparency, maintaining balanced perspectives and thoroughness are essential skills for being the secretary. Minutes are archived for future referencing. Much of 2022 was spent focussing on our visit to **Paxton House** -a Scottish villa built in 1758 with inherited associations to a Grenadian plantation. 3[rd] to 5[th] June 2022. Activities were carefully planned, expertly delivered to ensure the children enjoyed the experiences, learnt new skills, worked together and discovered something new whilst having fun. Other highlights of this year includes: - **Our visit to the British Museum-** Children appreciating the African Arts displayed there **-** February 2022. - Being part of the **judging panel** for the Annual Achievement Awards-June 2022. - Celebrating the life of the late Joycelyn Poole, who donated funds to Descendants. - Introducing Dr Jak Beula at our Black History Month Fundraising Dinner at West London College. - Bidding a fond farewell to Benjamin Busenze, Descendants’ Coordinator. In October 2020 Benjamin became Descendants’ first paid worker. He recently was appointed as a museum archivist at the Horiman Museum. - Attending a Black History Month Showcase at **Twyford CE High School. (20.10.2022)** Denise Charles-Chair and I, were amazed by the spectacular performances which should really have been televised. I am anticipating the launch of our 30[th] year anniversary celebrations. As we approach this time, I am grateful to be able to assist and support Descendants with continued input and my wisdom. Often behind the scenes, but prominent quietly, I am constantly reminded that lives are transformed by education. **Janet (Mitchell) Amara** **10** Descendants Charity Inspiring the Children and young people since 1993, 29 years. ## **Descendants 28th Annual General Meeting 2021-2022** ## **Treasurer’s Statement** During the financial period of 2021-2022, Descendants has applied for and were successful in obtaining small but much needed grants. These grants have enabled the valuable work Descendants endeavours to continue. Descendants makes a very small charge so every child, young person and families can afford to attend the online and in person sessions. We have also raised our own funds this year with the success of the sale of our first calendar, and the money we received from donations and childrens’ contribution. Descendants also received money from the family of Jocelyn Poole, a teacher from Twyford who passed away in 2022, and left a donation for Descendants. Descendants would like to thank all our sponsors and inform you that all money granted to the charity goes directly into exploring and creating new opportunities for all the children, young people and families who attend the organisation. Special thanks to Funders John Lyons, our main funder, Ealing council, BTEG, UK Youth and Acton Gardens LLP. Without your funds, we would not be in such a strong position to continue our work. As Descendants moves into its 30[th] year and continues to develop, we will apply for additional funding and grants, but will also look at ways to create opportunities to raise our own funds. We are constantly looking to improve the management of our funds. We currently have 3 signatories, and the sub- finance committee meets 3 times a year. Our internal finances are done weekly by committed volunteers. We attend finance courses and are always open to anyone who has financial experience and would like to assist. Descendants are grateful for the support and advice from Mrs Deborah Richards, who manages our paid worker’s wages. We are very fortunate to have a small but dedicated group of trustees, committee members and volunteers. These volunteers have given their time generously and I would like to publicly say a big thank you to them. Our Coordinator Benjamin, Descendants’ first paid worker, has now left Descendants to begin a new stage in his journey. Descendants wish him well and thank him for his contribution over the past 2 years. ## **Young Voices** Descendants are immensely proud of our Alumni’s, this year alone we have witnessed their individual achievements. From Saffiah graduating with first class honours, Jaquan (Junior) excelling at college, Markell flying high in his career, Yethrib completing her studies at Oxford University, now practicing as a doctor; Tatiana qualifying as a pilot, Lady completing her studies in Economics in Abu Dhabi, and Jayden beginning his journey at Oxford university. We as a community have a lot to be proud of! “We do achieve, in all aspects of society. At Descendants, we are not afraid to publicly congratulate and celebrate young people of African and Caribbean descent.” Whilst we have young people advising us, as a committee, we recognize the need to increase the participation of the younger generation. One of our young people, who recently graduated from Birmingham University, attended our Black History Month event, and informed us that there is a need for a young arm of Descendants. We are in the process of giving them the tools they need to implement their desire. ## **Looking forward** Descendants has had an incredible 29 years of offering Children, young people and their families some amazing opportunities. Next year we will be celebrating our 30[th] anniversary, we have many ideas and events planned to make this an unforgettable experience for the whole community. From an art exhibition at Pitzhanger Manor gallery, a celebratory event in the park, marking the 75[th] anniversary of the Windrush generation. 2023, will be a very special year of activities to mark 30 years of Volunteering, dedication, and achievement founded and led by an African and Caribbean group of black people in the Borough of Ealing. ## **Thank You!** Descendants’ Team would like to express gratitude to everyone who has supported the organisation throughout 2021-2022. We are very fortunate to have a small but dedicated group of trustees, committee members and volunteers. These volunteers have given their time generously and I would like to publicly say a big thank you to them. Our Coordinator Benjamin. Descendants, first paid worker. has now left Descendants to be8in a new stage in his journey. Descendants wish him well and thank him for his contribution over the past 2 years. Youn8 Voices Descendants are immensely proud of our Alumni's, this year alone we have witnessed their individual achievement5. From Saffiah 8raduating with first class honours. Jaquan (Junior) excelling at college, Markell flyin8 high in his career, Yethrib completing her studles at Oxford University, now prarticing as a doctor: Tatiana qualifying as a pllot, Lady completin8 her studies in Economlcs in Abu Dhabi. Celine graduating at Bournemouth and Jayden beginning his journey at Oxford universlty. We as a community have a lot to be proud ofl "We do achieve. In all aspects of society. At Descendants. we are not afraid to publicly congratulate and celebrate young people of African and Caribbean descent." Whilst we have youn8 people advisin8 us, as a committee, we recognize the need to increase the particlpation of the younger generatlon. One of our young people. who recently graduated from Bournemouth University, attended our Black History Month event, and informed us that there Is a need for a young arm of Descendants. We are in the process of giving them the tools they need to implement their desire. Looklng forward Descendants has had an incredible 29 years of offering Children. young people and their families some amazin8 OPPOrtunlties. Next year we will be celebrating our 30rh anniversary, we have many Ideas and events planned to make this an unforgettable experience for the whole community. From an art exhibition at Pitzhanger Manor gallery, a celebratory event in the th park, marking the 75 anniversary of the Windrush generation. 2023, will be a very special year of attivlties to mark 30 years of Volunteerin8, dedication, and achievement founded and led bv an African and Caribbean group of black people in the Borough of Ealing. Peri(MJ from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022 Treasurerfs Statement During the financial period of 2021-2022, Descendants has applied for and were successful in obtaining small but much needed grants. These grants have enabled the valuable work Descendants endeavours to continue. Descendants makes a very small charge so every child, young person and families can afford to attend the online and in person se55ions. We have also raised our own funds this year wlth the success of the sale of our first calendar, and the money we received from donations and childrens. contribution. Descendants also received a gift from the family of Jocelyn Poole. a teacher from Twyford who passed away in 2022, and left a donation for Des￿ndants. Descendants also raised money for the people of Delhi 'through their-Dance for Delhi project", worklng in partnership with Jay Kumar BEM and Hitesh Mohan based in Delhi durlng a crisis caused by Covid19, we raised approximately £2,CMJO to offer assistance. Descendants would like to thank all our sponsors and inform you that all money granted to the charity goes directly into explorin8 and creating new opportunities for all the children, young people and familie5 who attend the organi5ation. Without your funds, we would not be in such a strong position to continue our work. th As Descendants moves into Its 30 year and continues to develop, we will apply for additional funding and 8rants, but will also look at ways to create opportunities to raise our own funds. We are constantly looklng to improve the management of our funds. We currently have 3 Si8natories, and the sub- finance committee meets 3 times a year. Our internal finance5 are done weekly by committed volunteers. We attend finance courses and are always open to anyone who has financial experience and would like to assist. Descendants are grateful for the support and advi￿ from Miss Deborah Richards, who manages our paid workerfs wages.
