The trustees present their report and the unaudited financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2022. 

Reference and administrative information set out on page 1 forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with current statutory requirements, the charity’s trust deed and the Statement of Recommended Practice - Accounting and Reporting by Charities: SORP applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with FRS 102. 

## **Objectives and activities** 

## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in the governing document** 

- a) To advance the Christian faith in accordance with the statement of beliefs (which appears as a schedule in The Declaration of Trust) hereto particularly but not exclusively amongst students in Manchester and in such other parts of the UK or the world as the trustees may from time to time think fit and to fulfil such other purposes which are exclusively charitable according to the law of England and Wales and are connected with the charitable work of the Trust. 

- a) To relieve persons who are in conditions of need or hardship or who are aged or sick and to relieve the distress caused thereby in Manchester and in such other parts of the UK or the world as the trustees may from time to time think fit. 

The trustees review the aims, objectives and activities of the charity each year. This report looks at what the charity has achieved and the outcomes of its work in the reporting period. The trustees report the success of each key activity and the benefits the charity has brought to those groups of people that it is set up to help. The review also helps the trustees ensure the charity's aims, objectives and activities remained focused on its stated purposes. 

The trustees have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing the charity's aims and objectives and in planning its future activities. In particular, the trustees consider how planned activities will contribute to the aims and objectives that have been set. 

## **Summary of the main activities in relation to these objects** 

The main activities of Grace Church over the 2021-2022 financial year in relation to our charitable objectives are described below. 

## **a) To advance the Christian faith** 

## **Sunday Services and Mid-Week Groups** 

The church met weekly for a Sunday service. Our services included Bible teaching, a time of sung worship, prayer and a children’s ministry. 

The church runs mid-week groups which form a significant part of church life. We have groups meeting in Burnage, Fallowfield, Moss Side, Old Moat and Withington. Group leaders are supported and equipped through monthly training sessions.

## **Ministry to Students** 

Our student leadership team host and run a weekly Sunday evening meeting involving teaching and fellowship. Pastoral discipleship work is done on a 1 to 1 basis throughout the week. We have been encouraged to see our students grow in maturity and many are involved in serving at Grace Church and in their CUs. We also work in partnership with CUs at the Manchester universities to help them reach students with the gospel. 

We have an International Student Worker who has been involved in running a variety of events aimed at welcoming international students and adults, providing opportunities to support them with English language learning as well as exploring the Christian faith. Over the five years Joel has been in this post, a number of good relationships with international visitors have been built with a smaller proportion engaging with Grace Church. 

## **Mission & Partnerships** 

The church is involved in a range of local outreach initiatives, including the following: 

- Running a weekly play group for pre-school children with the aim of providing support and friendship to parents and carers 

- Running a community choir in Fallowfield 

- Helping with weekly online English conversation and grammar classes with people referred by the City Council and Alexandria Library 

- Meeting regularly to clean up a local park in the Old Moat ward to serve the community 

- Partnering with Friends International’s iCafé initiative, providing a conversation cafe for international students and academic visitors 

- Women’s ministry events which include a weekly bible study, book club, breakfasts and social meet ups 

In addition, an online Hope Explored course ran in January 2022 and a Christianity Explored from April to May 2022 with a total of 6 participants. 

We support and pray for several mission partners in a variety of ministries around the world: one leads and develops a website service distributing Scriptures to unreached language communities; a former member and his wife working amongst students in Athens; a church planter in North India. We have also been supporting church planting and leadership initiatives in France, Pakistan and Turkey. 

## **Staff Changes** 

In August 2021, Mike Tindall moved on to take up a Senior Pastor position at a church in London. In November 2021, Pete Horlock started his role as Interim Pastor for Grace Church. 

Landon Nicholls worked as a full-time intern at Grace Church until January 2022, on a Tier 2 Religious Worker visa coordinated and monitored by GEM in partnership with IGO (International Gospel Outreach). In January 2022, Landon’s internship transferred to Trinity Community Church to enable him to focus specifically on outreach to Iranians and have the opportunity to learn Farsi. 

## **To relieve persons who are in conditions of need or hardship** 

As a church, we support the Compassion Food Bank run by the Church of God of Prophecy in Moss Side, co-ordinating donations on a monthly basis. We also supported The Oasis Centre, Gorton and Barnabus Manchester with financial support from our Christmas service donations. 

Direct relief of hardship has been given to those that have approached the leadership, or been referred by church members. We have continued to support members of the church with illness, including emotional and pastoral needs. Our pastoral care structure aims to provide support practically, as well as

providing a system for people to refer issues that are more serious than they feel able to deal with to the elders or other trained members. 

## **Achievements and performance** 

- Grace Church has welcomed new people over the course of the year. There is an encouraging diversity of people from different ethnic groups, age ranges and a wide social/economic demographic 

- We have had the joy of seeing 5 people baptised in March 2022 

- We have been rebuilding service teams following the pandemic, with many people involved in serving in some capacity 

- Mid-week group leaders have been supported and developed through monthly training sessions 

- Mid-week groups have engaged in evangelism training through A Passion for Life resources 

- A weekly daytime women’s Bible study was started, as well as a monthly women’s book club 

- A pastoral care team is being formed to develop the pastoral care provision 

- We have established a finance team to oversee and manage church finances 

- We have seen a number of church family members get married over the course of the year, as well as families welcoming babies 

- A number of members have moved on for various reasons and have been prayed for on their final Sunday 

A few highlights over the course of the year: 

- In September 2021, we saw a large influx of people coming to the online conversation class and growth in the Internationals Bible study 

- Pete Horlock was appointed as Interim Pastor in November 2021 

- We held two carol services, one traditional service with Fallowfield Choir performing and one family service with a talk and activities for young people 

- Landon Nicholls was commissioned and had a positive send off to Trinity Community Church in January 2022 

- The students had a weekend away in January which included Bible teaching, fellowship and fun 

- The church responded generously to a stewardship season in February 2022 

- In March, the women met for a breakfast and had time together to read a Bible passage, pray and enjoy fellowship 

- The children’s ministry team held a training morning and a new children’s ministry leader was appointed in May 

- We enjoyed a big church weekend in June 

## **Financial review** 

At the end of the reporting period, the charity held cash funds of £65,447. There were no funds in deficit on 30 June 2022. 

## **Reserves Policy** 

In 2021, the trustees elected to increase the level of cash reserves maintained to £30,000 in order to meet any unforeseen commitments. We are above the level of reserves as stated in our reserves policy, although the trustees continue to monitor the financial situation carefully. 

## **Structure, governance and management** 

The organisation is an unincorporated charity, registered as a charity on 10[th] February 2005 in England and Wales. The charity is constituted under a trust deed which was last amended on 1[st] June 2014. The trustees are members of the charity but this entitles them only to voting rights. The trustees have no

beneficial interest in the charity. All trustees who receive benefits from the charity are outlined in note 3
of the accounts.
In line with the trust deed, a trustee is appointed by a resolution of the trustees passed by a majority.
This is recorded in the meeting minutes and signed by the new trustee and the meeting chair as
evidence of the appointment. All trustees declare their ag reement with the Statement of Beliefs.
Related parties and relationships with other organisations
During the course of this financial yea r, we were members of two extemal organisations. The first of
these is a church planting network called Acts 29, which we joined formally in January 2012. Mike
Tindall was a trustee of Acts 29 Great Britain. The second is a national group of churches called the
FIEC (Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches).
Statement of responsibilities of the trustees
Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements
for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity's financial attivities during the
period and of its financial position at the end of the period. In preparing financial statements giving a
true and fair view, the trustees should follow best practice and..
Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently
Observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP
Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent
State whether applicable UK Accounting Standanls and statements of recommended practi￿ have
been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial
statements
Prepare the financial statements on the going concem basis unless it is inappropriate to presume
that the charity will continue in operation
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records that disclose with reasona ble
accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial
statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of
the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other
irregularities.
The trustees a re responsible for the Maintenan￿ and integrity of the corporate and financial
information included on the charity's website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the
preparation and dissemination of financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdittions.

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30th June 2022 which are set out on pages 7 to 11. 

## **Responsibilities and basis of report** 

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). 

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. 

## **Independent examiner's statement** 

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: 

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or 

2. the accounts do not accord with those records 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Neither trustees or persons connected with them received any remuneration during the year . 

3 trustee received travel and subsistence expenses during the year of £542 (2021: £129).
