## **DIRECTOR’S REPORT**
The members present their report and accounts for the year ended 28[th] November 2024.
## ACTIVITIES
## **Music:**
Despite unavailability of the steel pan tutor due to illness for a large part of the period, regular rehearsal sessions for our steel pan band were held, utilising dedicated space at the Youth Engagement Slough (YES) shop in Slough High Street (SWIPE along with local organisations Aik Saath – Together as One and Resource Productions our lead partners form the YES consortium).
## **Riverside:**
Water sport activities continued at the Riverside Centre. Corporate volunteering has played a big part in repairing boats and tidying the boatyard, and regular volunteers every Friday who are Adult Learning for Independence and Employment students at the Berkshire College of Agriculture, have been maintaining the garden. We also hosted a summer festival music event at the Riverside in early July 2024, despite torrential rainfall and high winds on the day meaning no activity could take place on the water.
In September 2024, for the third year running, SWIPE in collaboration with Indian Diaspora UK (IDUK) hosted the Ganesh Immersion Ceremony (a cultural celebration) at the Riverside Centre. The event has increased in numbers annually, with the first year reaching 600 people, the second 2,000 and this year 2,400 attended over the 3 evenings. IDUK raised funds to help develop the facilities at the Riverside Centre to enable more people to safely take part.
## **Community:**
During the summer, we ran a Summer Holiday Club aimed at tackling the challenges faced by lowincome families during the school holiday. The project, aimed at 11- to 16-year-olds, ran for 4 hours a day and provided more than just meals, offering an experience of engaging in water sports and nutritional education to improve well-being, teaching water safety skills, supporting social development, whilst also equipping volunteers and staff with valuable coaching qualifications. To support healthy eating at home, each of the participants received a slow cooker along with recipes and the food to help them cook nutritious meals – an invaluable resource for families beyond the duration of the project. Through our partnership with British Rowing, the participants were invited to attend our Sunday community rowing sessions for free. Those who wish to pursue rowing further were given a year’s British Rowing membership, ensuring they could continue their rowing journey without any financial barriers.
We continue to sit on local boards, attend local forums engaging with the local authority NHS police and others to ensure the betterment of our town and support for its residents and young people.
## **Heritage:**
Our chairman wrote an article for Black History Month in October 2024 for the Thames Valley Police (TVP) internal newsletter. The article was focussed on the experiences of the first-generation of settlers from the Caribbean in Slough, with some material sourced from two of our previous heritage projects – Remember the Times and Afro-Irish links, with links to the online video clips from the documentaries. Two copies of the Afro-Irish Links project book were also donated to TVP as a resource for officers and staff to borrow. In addition to the article, our Vice Chair and CEO took part in an informal drop-in session at Slough Police station for police officers and staff to find out more about the Vice Chair’s experiences as a member of the ‘Windrush Generation’, our documentary projects and about SWIPE. Positive feedback was received from TVP about the article and the session.
As the activities above demonstrate, collaboration with public sector organisations and other voluntary sector groups has been a key theme during the reporting period. Wherever possible, we will continue to work in partnership to bring together the different and diverse sections of the local community to deliver projects that are inclusive.
