Headway Ikrby Seeks to imprnv¢ the qualty and whole life prnspects for ￿0p1¢ living with a
brain injury and their loved ones. This includes improving an indivAduals' self-
este￿ confidence, self-identity, relationship4 80cial skills health and w¢ll-bcin& assessrnent
of risk-tskin8 behaviour, and orBanisational skills along with helping them manage specific
problems such as poor memory, ￿Ur0 fatigue and mood management. In general. we ty to
achieve thi8 by encouraging people to engage An activities that help them do things for
themselves with appropriate lev¢l8 of mentoring and sup￿. Given the complexity of the
Lx)gnitiv¢, emotional) pbysical and behavioural probl¢m8 which can follow a brain injury* we have
ts b¢ able to ptt)vide a range of services and flexibility of approach in order to achi￿¢ this
effectively.

Fornied in 1994, Headway D¢rby exists to work towards their vision of improving lif¢ after brain
injury.

Throughout the 2023-2024-year Headway Derby have continu¢d to support some of the most
vulnerable and complex rnembers of 80¢iety* providing them with communty rehabilitation
activities in their recovery post injury.
Our three core services havc continued to b¢- Training and Development, Peer sup[￿ (koup8.
Conununity Outreach xrvices. Most of these services are funded throu8h su¢cessfill 8rant
I￿orne.
peer support services are offered between Monday and Friday and have a range of groups
availabl¢ to Service users such as our Happy Monday's men's 8foup¥ Thyme to grow allotment
grou￿ and HeadForward our arts and culture group.

most complex brain injury survivors within Derby and Derbyshire. The service has allowed us to

4ÉoG￿n.' At the time of hi8 head injury. JL was living in Liverpool and unfortunatsly
struggling with homele&gnc88 and drug addiction. One day. in broad daylighL JL found
uncoDSCiOUS after being severely beatsn in an unprovoked attack that l¢ft him with severe brain
damage. JL was placed on lifr support. and after a month was Still not able to wall(, tsIK or even
o￿n his Cy￿. Although his dcfiGits were severe, hc made some considerable improvemcnt and
was moved from the intensive we unit to a neurological rehabilitation ward where he 5￿t close
to a year.

Despite a lengthy 8tay in the neuro Trhab ward, JL was thclared as havin8 'platsaued', with
Sever¢ deficits particularly around memory and cognition. JL was found to lack m¢ntal capcity
for health and welfare and would not be able to live independently. As such, Adult Social Care
d¢cid¢d that the only 8Uitabl¢ residence for JL to be discharged to was a nursing home. This was
du¢ to his exten8iv¢ nursing needs (meththe treaknenl use of PRN Medicatio￿ assistance with
dressing and showering. ets), and also the fact that he was under a Deprivation of LilKrty order
due to hi8 bigh absconding risk JL had limited family involvement in his care, and the only
per8on who was actively involved in his rewvery was his daughter.
JL'S daughter had moved frorn Liverpool to Derbyshir¢ many years a80. Due to the distance. AL
Stsuggled with makin8 the 4 hour round tiip multipl¢ times a week to ViSAt h¢r. with no supporL
During this tin￿, the reIationship between herself, the hospitsl, and adult social care broke down,
whiGh had a negative cffect upon her own her mental health. She w&8 8truggling with what to do,
and where to turn to for assistance ftir ber father. Her main priority at this p)int was having
someone to advocate on behalf of hcrself and her father, and to help with her father's discharye
fiDm hospital. JL'8 dau8bter liaised wtth statutory and h¢alth s¢rvice8 in order to obtsin a
placemcnt at a local Derby nursing home to be near each oth¢r.
In terms of Headway Derby's continued 8uppo¢ both JL and his daughtrr are supw)rted under the
Steps Ahead Project: JL receives I hour of outreach a week at his nur8ing home, and bis daught¢r
reeeives ad hoc support around benefits and advocacy under the family support servi¢¢.
Addrtionally, JL now attends a Headway Derby support wup weekly. JL'8 n￿1n difficulties
are around behaviour managemcnl memory> cognition, and impulse control. sin￿ receiving
various ty￿8 of SUp￿t from Headway Dety, JL'S Social worker and nursing home staff have
reprted a significant irnpmvement in his bchaviour.

Without the support of Hcadway Derby, it is like that JL'S daughtsr would have
bccome so overwhelmed wlth Managi￿ her father's situation that she may w¢ll have
ended up in crisi8 herself. She has explained that this has happened pttviousty. and
that Headway D¢ty's intsrventions and support aided to remain more stable and
avoid becoming unwell.

Supporting the daugbter and adult social care in findin8 appropriate housing for
JL meant that he has been able to awess the most suitsble carc for his needs. As JL'8
brain injury 18 very cornple4 it was imixrative that the right type of housing was
found in order to aid his recovery and rehabilitstion.
As the nursing hom¢ staff had little exFrrience of caring for someone with a
Severe brain injury. Headway Derby 8UPPOrted them to understand how it can aff
behaviour, and as Such. allowed them to deliver the highest level of care to JL.
Liaising with Adult Social Care to reinstat¢ JL'S l-l in the nursing homc meant
that JL'S ri8k8 of falls. injuries, and absconding was significantly (kcreased.
Sup￿tin8 With benefits applications and financial contributions forms took a lot
of pressurc off JL'8 dau8htsr, as well as ensurin8 that JL r¢ceived all benefits and
support that h¢ was entitled to, and reducing the risk of inwrrect ]nforn￿tiOn b¢in8
relayed by JL him%lf, leading to difficulties with th¢ benefits service.
When JL was fArst discharged, he was not ready or stable enough to a¢¢ess peer
support groups with Headway Derby. How¢ver. with the ongoing support of Headway
Derby JL has now been consistently accessing one of the ￿eT support groups for
some time. Supporting him to acce&8 and participate in this 8roup was a rnassiv
achievemenL and something that thought would not be possible.
Headway Derby's services now run five days a weeK offering a tailored package of support to
everyone who ne￿8 IL At the start of this financial year Headway De￿ was supporting 23
service user8 in d&y centre activities. but by Ma￿h 2024 Headway Dethy was supporting 58
Servi￿ users as well a8 1 I families in various different activities and groups.
Over the 2023-2024 y¢ar we have also held several fundraising ¢vents to ensure sustaithility of
the charity's incorn¢.

1.4 Ineoming resources
All incoming resources are included in the SOFA when the charity is legally ¢ntided to the
incorn¢ and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accurncy. Gifts in kind have b¢¢n
included at mark¢t value of gifts r¢ceived and in assets acquired. No amounts arc inGluded in
the financial statements for servi¢¢s donated by volunteers.

All exF¢nditur¢ 18 accounted for on an accru&ls basis and has b¢¢n Glassified under headings
that aggr¢gate all cost8 r¢lating to the catsgory. Where costs cannot be dircctly attribut¢d to

resources. Fund-raising costs are those incurred in sc¢king voluntary contributions and do not

1.6 Debtors
Trade and other d¢btors are recognised at the settlernent amount due after any trade discounts
offered. Pryyments valued at the amount prepaid net of any trad¢ discounts due.
1.7 Cash and eash equlvalents
Cash and cash equivalents include in han￿ deposits held at call with banks. other short-
terni liquid inveslments with Ori￿nal maturities of thrK months or less, and bank overdrafts.
Bank overdrafts are 8hown within borrowings in current liabilities.
1.8 Credltor8 aDd provisions
Creditor8 and provisions rncogn1￿d where the chartty has a present objigation re8ulting
from a Ixst event that will probably r¢sult in the transf¢r of funds to a third paty and thc
amount due to settle the obli8ation can be M￿Sured or estimated reliably. Creditors and
provisions are nornMlly recoBnised at their settlement amount after allowin8 for any trade
discounts due.
1.9 Flnanclal in8truments
The charity has financial assets and financial liabilitie8 of a kind that qualify as basic
financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value
and subsequently measured at their s¢ttlement value.

are discharged or cancelled.
1.10 Employee benefits
The cost of any unus¢d holiday entitlement is r¢co8nised in the period in which th¢

Tcrrnination benefits are recognised inllnediately as an expense when th¢ company is
demon8trably committed to terniinats the ¢mployment of an ernploy¢¢ or to provide
terminatson b¢nefrts.

1.11 Taxation
Th¢ charity is ex¢mpt from tax on income and gains falling with section 505 of the T&xes Act
1988 or KGtion 252 of the Tamtion of Cbargeable Gains Act IW2 to the extent that these are
applied to its charitsble objects.

IndAvidual fixed ass¢ts are capitslised at cost and are depreciated over their cstimat¢d useful
