The journeyDf A.S.
58 years old from Nuneaton
suffering wlth chronlc health condltlons and Psychols
A.S. was referred to Art for Wellbeing by Healrh Exchange Sodal Prescribing. We were informed
that KS. has 3 smart phone but had never used online platforms before. We called A.S. who
also confirmed that"1 am not arty at all. I haverft done anything since school dnd I wasp.t
good at drawin8 even then but I'm wlllin8 to give anythlng a 80. I haven't spoken to anyone
for day5 and I'm wondering what the polni of me belng here Is..
We helped ks. enrol on'A Passion for Plants. 6-week palntlng course and we Supported her 1.1
to leam how to use Zoom. AS. completed an online questionnaire at trhe start of course and
scored 13 points OUT of rnax.35, demonstrating severe mental ill health (rather than low to
moderate) AS. was contscted by Arty-Folks Wellbeing Coach for 1."1 discussion to gain a better
understanding OF her Inental health needs and the support she is iurrenily receiKnfi8.
I'.frAy prescrlprlons had stopped suddenly and I became very ill. I had absolutely horrendous
hallucinai5ons and horrlble intruslve volces and rhoughis. I had losi interest in everything, didrft
ge.[ dressed. didn't shower. didnt botherwlth eating. I laid on the settee and left the back door
open for rhe dogs. I felt numb, no emotion, dead on IhÈ Inside. I felt I was better off dead and
my volces agreed. and so I took an overdose. but then called the ambulance.
I h3d never used Zoom before but Arty-Folks staff helped me and now art has become a big
parr of my life. Gradually over the weeks the blackness started to lift and positive emoiion
came back. l enjoy my Ilfe now and I've made new frlends and we do things together.
positive and healthy things Ilke walklng and Tal<hl. I hadnt been in Nuneaton io¥vn centre
for 2 years but now I meet my arty friends at a café and it has lifted my self-esteem. I can be
creative and I'm enjoying 1¢ and that's all that matters. Ik never done so much art in my life!"
Course tutor., "A.S, always attended and did her besr but she was very corscious that her
artwork was not as experienced as other participanig. It took her a while to appreciate that
everyone has a different starting point and that what mattered was the openness io learning.
The peer group was fantastic and I still rememDer the day when ir finally clicked and A.S. visibly
enjoyed being creative. being herself. She has since created some really quirky and original
pieces of work!"
A.S. was dlscharged by mental health servlces. She Is now enjoylng a full week tsf
rewarding actlvltles wlth frlends she has made through Art for Wellbeing course& and
she is able to deal appropriately wlth challenges and set-backs In Ilfe.

T'he Journey of C.W.
62 year old from Nuneaton. was diagnosed 8 years. I
ago with a terminal health condltion thaE stsrted her
depression, Until then. C. used to make a livins as
an art tutor speciali5ing in warér colours. C first
attended A Passion for Plants and subsequentiythe
Healing Art of QiGong.
could cry. Art was my life! And then it was all gone. Thi5 horTlble illness took it all away from
me and Corona just pui the cherry on top. I felt so dep￿Ssed rhat I Stopped bein8 creative and I
felt like a failure. Yeah. I dont know how prisoners do it. but I suppose Ihey have got a release
datel.
For 8 years now l*e had to refuse soclal contact and It really got me to breaklng
point. I knew I had reached the bottom and l just didnt know how I was going to get back
up. My son always says "Mum, you're a troopev but I really feel like the troops have left
e and I'rn dealing with this dreadful illness alone.
y GP Social Prescriber called me and told me about Artfor Wellbeing courses and I felt
really excited for the fi'rst time in yearsl I signed up for a course but had no idea how 10
use Zoom at Ihe start but after a few weeks, it felr really nice! The first workshop I drew
ome chickweed with roots and it felt like being back at art college again. The Passion for
P53nis course was very enjoyable and it was so nice to be talking to other people again
and listening to their storiesl Somehow it made me feel better. I didn't feel guite so
alone.
It was the Qigong course that attuallygot me back into water colours. Ifs about the
power of your mind to form your own images, and with the movement they become
more alive and colourful in your head. I loved the breathing exercises. the meditating and
relaying li into paint. And it really did bring about healing for me! Yes. l*e got this
horrible disease but I can see past that and go into my imagination and mix my own
colours, and this has really helped me put the dSfficultles with my body aside. l am not
able 10 go ovi but I can think about what I'm going to paint next. These courses have
been a God.send.
I won't allow this illness to become everything l am anymore. Now I make sure I go out
most days and I have my oxygen tank with me. l am getting physically stronger, this is the
strongest1Sie been for some years. l am able to cook a heafthy meal from scratch
most days. and I have even started to bake againl
When I picked up my paintbrushe5 again it filled a masslve vold because now I'm
thinking about what I can do, not what my illness stops me doing. I was always a very
positive person but it disappears when you are ill, and especially with the pandemic.
Do I think that I'm finding thai'md again now? Well. I hope so'coz I brought loads of new
paints and I'm about to order some very expensive watercolour paper. I did a drawlng the,.
other day and I thought"Crikey, you havent forgotten how to do thaL have you14*
