TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT 2022
The Friends exist to support the RWA by providing finance, and to arrange lectures and cultural visits. With origins in the Subscribing Members at the Academy’s foundation in 1844, they became an independent unincorporated charitable association governed by a constitution adopted in February 1999, modified on 1 November 2004 (prior to registration as a charity), and again on 20 November 2020.
The Friends’ affairs are run by a committee of Trustees, elected annually by the membership. The Trustees acting during 2022 were:

No Trustee has received any remuneration or other benefits, nor any Trustee’s expenses.
The Charity’s bankers are: HSBC, 149 Whiteladies Road, BRISTOL BS8 2RR
The Accounts show total net receipts of £33,719 and total payments of £35,894, including donations to the RWA of £32,000. Receipts have increased substantially, largely due to growth in membership, running costs are down significantly, and we have massively increased our donations to the RWA. A notable event this year was the return, after a three-year hiatus, of the Friends’ Exhibition, which was held at the Create Centre. It was a social, artistic, and financial success, to be repeated in 2023. The full and varied calendar of Trips and Visits, including a residential trip to Norwich, as well as day trips to Cardiff, Hereford, and London, as well as a Stanley Spencer-themed day out, is a significant part of the Friends’ activity, expanding appreciation of our artistic heritage as well as attracting new members and bringing in funds.

I repori on the accounts for the year ended 3 1 December 2022 set out on pages 3
and 4.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner
The Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Trustees
consider that an audit is nol required for this year under Section 144 of the
Charities Act 2011 (tbe 2011 Act) alld that an independent eYallliTthtion is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under charity law
and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
examine the accounts under Section 145 of the 2011 Aet;
to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the
Cbarity Commission under Section 145(5Mb) of the 2011 Act; and
to state whether particular matters have come to my attentio
Basis of the Independent Examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given
by the Charity Commission. Iln examination includes a review of the accounting
records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those
records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the
accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning such matters.
The procedures undertaken do not prode all the eTrdence that would be required
in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts
present a "true and fair view" and the Teport is limited to those matters set out in
the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(11 which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material Tespect
the requirements:
to keep accounting records in accordance hith Section 130 of the
Charities Act 2011: and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply
with the accountÉng requirements of Section 132 of the charities Act 2011
and with the methods and principles of the Statement of recommended
Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charitieshave not been met. or
12) to which. Én my opinion. attention should be drawn in order to enable a
proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
