TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT 2021
The Friends exist to support the work of the RWA. They do so by providing finance, and by arranging lectures and cultural visits. Their origins can be traced to the Subscribing Members at the Academy’s foundation in 1844. They became an independent unincorporated charitable association governed by a constitution adopted in February 1999, modified on 1 November 2004 (prior to registration as a charity), and lastly in October 2021.
The Friends’ affairs are run by a committee of Trustees, elected annually by the membership.
The Trustees acting during 2021 were:
Jane Boot Deborah Jayne Mann Philippa Jane Shelton (appointed April 2015) (appointed April 2019, (appointed May 2018 ) resigned December 2021) Barbara Henderson Andrew Nixon Laurel Smart (appointed December 2020) (appointed July 201 8) (appointed April 2019) Anne Christine Jewell Stephen Noreiko Sharne Tasney (appointed March 2018) (appointed October 2021) (appointed February 2019) Gordon Lewis Sue Quirk Patricia Triggs (appointed June 2021) (appointed February 2021) (appointed December 2020)
No Trustee has received any remuneration or other benefits, nor any Trustee’s expenses.
The Charity’s bankers are: HSBC, 149 Whiteladies Road, BRISTOL BS8 2RR
The Accounts show receipts amounting to £29,648 and outgoing payments of £26,306. The Friends’ funds have thus increased by £3,342. Funds were raised primarily through membership subscriptions. Other sources of income, including cultural visits, educational events promoting the work of the Academicians, and the Friends’ exhibition, which was held successfully in May 2022, had been curtailed this past year, but although in 2020 restrictions meant that Trips & Visits activity had to be cancelled or postponed, in 2021 as the Covid situation changed, we ran visits in July (Chavenage/Cirencester), October (Oxford), and December (London), as well as a residential visit in September (Norwich), raising in all £2,185. Our main expenditure consisted of donations to the RWA in support of its charitable activities for the public benefit, totalling £18,325. During 2021, members offered their services to carry out various tasks, volunteers continued to give valuable support to such RWA events as took place. The Friends also played an important part in helping the RWA raise £7,625 for a pair of Glass Doors to grace the entrance to the refurbished Academy.
