REVIEW OF ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS:

Throughout the year the Trustees have fulfilled the charity’s objectives by organising fundraising events. These consisted of a summer garden party, the charity’s annual dinner in November which was held at the Newcastle Cricket Club, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, and a musical evening at St Franics’ Church Hall, High Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne in February. In addition, supporters have continued to donate regularly throughout the year.

The charity has continued to receive donations of clothing, shoes, books and stationery which have been shipped to Ghana.

The charity’s appeal to raise £15,000 to replace the roof on the girls’ house at King Jesus Charity Home in Boadi, and the boys’ rooms at the Apemso house, was successful and the work has been completed. In addition, a grant was obtained to flush the bore holes at the homes two sites and install new pumps. The yard at the Apemso house was also concreted.

One of the charity’s trustees, Nana Kwabena Edusei II has continued to monitor how the charity’s donations have been used at King Jesus Charity Home (KJCH) and is satisfied that the money is being used for the intended purposes. In addition, the home’s director Bishop Kofi Owusu-Afriyie has signed a declaration that he will ensure all monies from the Ghanaian Children’s Trust will be used for the intended purposes. All is going well at the children’s home. All the children are in good health and happy, and all the school-age children are in full-time education.

STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2025

The original bungalow at King Jesus Charity Home was old and in need of extensive renovation, but it was not considered to be economical to do this, and the building was no longer fit for purpose. It has therefore been demolished and a larger, two-storey building is being erected with funding from a supporter in the United States of America. Because the new building is larger than the old bungalow, it is deemed no longer safe for the kitchen and outdoor cooking facilities to be so close to the new building, and the Ghana Fire Service have recommended that a new kitchen be built well away from any other buildings. The estimated cost of this is approximately £6,500 and the trustees have applied for grants to meet this cost. In addition, a further £500 is being sought to install fire extinguishers, smoke and fire alarms.

The solar system, supplied by the Ghanaian Children’s Trust, is working well and providing sufficient electricity for the home’s current needs. However, the trustees are aware that this might need to be extended when the new building is operational.

REVIEW OF FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE: throughout the year the

charity had a surplus of £1,366.66. The amount carried forward from the previous financial year was £530.77. Total payments amounted to £37,696.61, of which £12,508 was sent to King Jesus Charity Home for school fees and general running expenses and £22,760 for special projects. The restricted fund at the financial year end was £0.00.

POLICY ON RESERVES: the Trustees maintain sufficient funds in reserve in the unrestricted fund to cover one year’s running costs which consist of website hosting, lottery licence and insurance (professional and indemnity, public and products liability, Trustees liability, crisis containment and employers’ liability). All monies in the unrestricted

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of the Ghanaian Children’s Trust

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025, which are set out on the attached Statement of Financial Activity and Balance Sheet.

Responsibilities and Basis of report

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

There are no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
