REPORT TO THE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

History, objectives and Activities of African Women Group

The management Committee submit their report and financial statements for the year ended 31st March 2022.

The African Women Group was established on the 20th of April 2002 and registered as a charity on the 4th day of November 2004.

The African Women Group was formed as a self-help group for local African Refugee Women and their families suffering isolation, social exclusion and deprivation.

It is one a handful of voluntary organisations for African Refugee Women in West London offering support to African Refugee Women to raise awareness and build confidence, so that they are able to develop themselves and take more responsibilities for their own lives.

We aim to work towards the empowerment and self-development of women through a provision of drop in service and a programme of workshops and community based courses.

The Group provides a safe environment for women and their children to come together to share their experiences, participate and learn new skills that will lead to a better quality of life.

The objectives of the African Women Group are charitable in nature and are of the following as laid out in the Group's Constitutional Document:

  1. To relieve poverty, hardship and distress of African Refugee Women's living in London by the provision of regarding their educational, training and employment needs as well as advice on health matters, housing, interpreting/translating and advocacy.

  2. the preservation and protection of health amongst women from Africa.

  3. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for the recreation and other leisure time occupations in the interest of social welfare of improving their condition of life, Structure, Governance and Management

The charity is constituted by a Constitution. It is governed by the regulation set out in the Constitution and run by a voluntary management committee. The charity's new committee members are elected at the Annual General Meeting every two years.

The management committee met 3 times during the year to review the activities of the charity including the approval of the annual report and accounts as well as budgets, capital expenditure and to set out the fund raising date for the charity. The day to day work of the charity is overseen by the Chairperson who is responsible for reporting to the Management Committee.

The Management Committee are aware of the potential risks to the charity, both financial and otherwise, therefore, strategies are in place to control these risks. Assessments have also been taken relating to fire and health safety. The management Committee are seriously looking into other risk areas such as operational, governance and compliance with law and regulations.

Achievements and Performance of the Group

The management Committee are pleased to report an active year. The African Women Group is actively seeking to protect its financial security in order to continue to safeguard the on going, development of the Centre and its projects and services that it offers to the local refugee and asylum seeking communities in Westminster and other surrounding boroughs in London.

Over the las 12 months we organised and delivered the following activities:

Supplementary education programme including study support and homework support to children from BAME communities who were underachieving in the field of education .

We ran African families Health Living programme, where we provided a variety of educational, early learning, child development, social and children health focussed information that address the needs of children.

We ran an advice and information service on welfare, housing, consumer, translation support. We ran a mental health awareness programme to provide support to women and mothers affected by low levels of mental health problems resulted from isolation and loneliness.

Performed outreach Work - networking and liaising with African refugee families across North Westminster, we ran training sessions for volunteers on how to conduct interviews with the East African (Sudanese, Somali and Eritrean) community about their heritage and settlement stories.

We organised a food & cultural festival which showcased East African (Sudanese, Somali & Eritrean) food and culture. It also served as a networking event for the local community.

Financial Review

The financial position of the Charity is portrayed in the accompanying Annual Accounts.

Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities Law applicable to charities in England & Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statement for each financial year, which gives a true and fair view of the charity's financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year.

In Preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to:

Reserve Policy

It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds, which have not been designated for a specific use, should be maintained at a level equivalent to at least three months expenditure. The Management Committee consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of significant drop in funding, the charity will be able to continue its charity's current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised.

The African Women Group will actively work to achieve this level of reserve.

Risk Factors

The Trustees have assessed the major risks to which the charity is exposed and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks. Independent Examiner

Independent Examiner According to the provisions of the Charities Act 2011, the Trustees agree that an audit is not required for financial; however due to this provision of the same act an Independent Examiner is required.

The Trustees agreed to discuss the requirement with J-Accountancy & Consultancy Limited to appoint them at our next AGM.

The Management Committee approved the accounts on the 7th March 2022

Independent Examiner’s report to the Trustees

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting applicable Accounting Standards and the Charity Act 2011

Responsibilities of the Trustees

The trustees and the Management Committee are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and that you consider the audit requirements of the charities Act 2011. It is my responsibilities to state on the basis of procedures specified in the directions given by Charity Commissioners whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of my examination

The examination of the accounts was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the charity commissioners. The examination includes:

I planned and performed my investigation so as to obtain all the information and explanations which I consider necessary in order to provide me with sufficient evidence to give reasonable assurance that the financial statements are free from material mis-statements whether caused by fraud or irregularity of error. In forming my opinion, I also evaluated the adequacy of the presentation of information in the financial statements.

Opinion

In my opinion the financial statements as prepared give a true and fair view of the charity state of affairs as at 31 of March 2022 and the incoming resources and their applications in the year ended have been properly prepared in accordance with general directions given by Charity Commissioners.
