The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2020. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015). 

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

## **Objectives and aims** 

The objectives of the Relationships Foundation, as stated in the Memorandum and Articles of Association, are: 

1. To carry out research into theological and ethical principles and economic and social issues concerning the organisation and conduct of human relationships in personal and public life by: a) Carrying out and/or commissioning research projects; and 

b) Evaluating the results of research projects and applying the same for the public benefit, in particular, but not exclusively, by sponsoring public initiatives. 

2. To provide education and training to the general public in the promotion and encouragement of improved organisational and personal relationships. 

In order to further these two objectives we work with political and civic leaders, private and public sector organisations, voluntary bodies and the general public. 

A concern for relationships lies at the heart of the Foundation's work. Based on existing research, the Foundation believes that good relationships are essential to individual and collective wellbeing and, therefore, that a central goal of public policy should be to create an environment conducive to the formation and development of good relationships at all levels of society. Consequently, it works to see the importance of relationships recognised and acted upon in public and private life through  a combination of research programmes, practical initiatives and strategic partnerships which help shape public policy, encourage best practice and equip people to think and act more relationally.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Activities and achievements** 

Having had regard to the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit the trustees believe that Relationships Foundation's activities deliver public benefit through: 

- Incubating new initiatives that can strengthen relationships. 

- Creating a more supportive climate for family and community relationships by improving public understanding of how family, community and organisational relationships are essential for improved social outcomes and the impact of public policy on such relationships. 

- Campaigns to protect and strengthen specific relationships, or to counter specific pressures on them; and 

- Consultancy to enable organisations to improve the assessment and conduct of their relationships. 

During the course of the year our main activities have been in the following areas: 

## 1. Relational Schools 

Our overall concern is to promote greater understanding and improved practice with regard to the role of relationships in supporting better outcomes was focused on a number of projects. We also promoted the lessons of our work to schools, teaching professions, educational development institutes and policymakers through articles, research, books, public speaking and social media. 

Our largest project involved working as part of the ‘IntegratED’ multi agency project headed by  the Centre for Social Justice, on behalf of Porticus International. This project is an ongoing three-year project (May 2nd, 2019 to May 3rd, 2022) to compare and contrast the quality of relationships in  ten "outlier" alternative provision settings and a wider benchmarking group also drawn from the alternative provision sector. The target population is children in severe adversity or disadvantage who are disproportionately most likely to be inappropriately excluded from state Secondary  schools in England, and once excluded are most likely to receive sub-optimal Alternative Provision. 

Our main work has been with schools in Australia and Canada looking at both student-student and student-teacher relationships. Schools received their own detailed report enabling them to reflect on how best to support relationships in the school. 

A major development was working with a data analytic partner in Australia, Finity, to undertake multivariate regression modelling of data from these students including our measurement of the wellbeing of each of these students. This revealed significant findings about the extent to which relationships with both other students and teachers are highly protective of wellbeing. We were  also able to support schools with better understanding about the influence of school size, academic ability, gender and parental separation on students' relationships and their correlation with wellbeing. 

Our CEO Rob Loe was requested to speak at the Korean Educational Development Institute in Korea and the Church of England Educational Leadership Conference, where he presented on the work of Relational Schools.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

We supported the continuation of the Suffolk and Norfolk School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme, one of England's largest, commissioning Relational Schools, in partnership with Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing and the Open University, to carry out a five-year longitudinal research and development programme. This explores the impact of a trainee teacher's social and professional relationships on their success as a trainee and thereafter as a teacher. Relationships influence the ways in which people cope with stress, access support and advice,  learn, collaborate, and find fulfilment in their work. Understanding the relational factors that make it more likely that some people will either not complete their training or leave the profession in their early career could inform earlier and effective interventions for early career teachers. The research is also set against the backdrop of an international crisis in teacher retention, particularly acute in their early careers. The intervention combines identification of vulnerable training teachers with generating data to inform the planned deployment of financial and human capital, aimed to maximize retention. 

Combining our relationship measurement surveys with social network analysis and assessment of personality traits found a number of risk factors including scores for 'self-management' and  'working with others'; being male; not living with family/partner; having children of primary school age; losing touch with longstanding friends; non-engagement with social media groupings with peers; lack of support with planning. Protective factors were CPSQ scores for 'coping' or 'caring and compassion'; using friends and family for relaxation; having friends and family who also help professionally; strong relationship with mentor; strong relationship with tutor(s); strong relationships with other staff in schools, in particular teaching assistants; positive experiences of using social media with peers. 

## 2. A more supportive climate for families 

During the year our support for family relationships was also expressed in continuing support for the Family Stability Network (FASTN), an initiative funded by the Oglesby Charitable Trust. We provided continuing consultancy support, focused on advising FASTN's Executive Director and responding to the government's plans for a new Relationships and Sex Education curriculum for schools. 

## 3. Keep Sunday Special campaign 

Relationships Foundation hosts the Keep Sunday Special campaign which seeks to protect shared time for family and community life. Our research has shown that many people are required to work on weekends, and Sundays in particular, when they would prefer not to. For parents this has a significant impact on both time spent with children, time together as a couple, as well hindering other care responsibilities and community involvement. As well as responding to media enquiries we worked with our campaign partners, most notably the Association of Convenience Stores, other retail groups, the shopworkers union USDAW, politicians and various churches and faith groups.

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES** 

At the start of the year we commissioned the building of a bespoke survey platform to administer our Relational Proximity ® surveys to enable us to save considerably on ongoing per survey costs and to be able to provide a better service for the schools we serve, enabling us to create bespoke surveys tailored to the unique needs of each individual school. We were pleased to appoint Dr James Griffin Ph.D as a Senior Researcher with responsibility of further developing the reporting capabilities of RView and in particular the online dashboard. 

## 5. Partnerships 

Discussions are in place with UK based We Are Company Ltd and Australian based Neometric LLC to develop new tools for the measurement of and leading the improving of key relationships within NGOs and for profit organisations. 

## 6. Relational Analytics 

Discussion commenced on the transfer of 70% of the existing shares in Relational Analytics Ltd to Relationships Foundation. 

## 7. IP transfer 

Discussions commenced on the transfer of all existing IP from Relational Research Ltd to Relationships Foundation. 

## 8. RL to Australia 

In June 2020 Rob Loe moved to Australia to take on a part time role with Christian Schools Australia and became group CEO and continues to work for Relationships Foundation one day per week. Day to day running of UK operations was given to Neil Prem who became Executive Director. 

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW** 

## **Reserves policy** 

It is the policy of the Trustees to hold an amount in free reserves equivalent to 3 month's salary costs. The free reserves as of 31st August 2020 met this target. 

The financial outcome for the year was a deficit of £91,751 compared to a surplus of £144,061 the previous year. Free reserves at 31st August 2020 were £213,834. 

We have continued to invest in the development of the RView survey platform and Rview Reporting Dashboard and new schools’ projects and partnerships in the USA and Australia in  which there will be significant areas of activity in the coming years.

## **FUTURE PLANS** 

The ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic has caused many of our scheduled projects to be put on indefinite hold. This will impact both our financial position and reduce our impact. However we expect to see significant growth over the next few years in our schools both internationally and in the UK with the prospective of developing additional long term partnerships and potential joint ventures. 

Earlier discussions with ACSI in USA are expected to now result in a pilot project in June 2021.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT** 

The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006. 

The Relationships Foundation was incorporated under and is regulated by its Memorandum and Articles of Association dated 28th July 2004 and amended by special resolution dated 7 October 2004. The company limited by guarantee was registered as a charity by the Charity Commission on 27 October 2004. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of new trustees** 

Invitations are extended from time to time to suitably qualified women and men to become  trustees, following consultation with the existing body of trustees. A matrix of trustees’ interests and skills is regularly review. A number of new trustees were identified, and we were pleased to appoint the following as trustees: 

Chair: Jeremy Lefroy Trustee: Eleanor McCrone Trustee: David Shamiri 

Our newly appointed trustees were provided with a comprehensive pack of induction materials, including a copy of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the company and the Trust Deed. They have an induction with fellow trustees and the Executive Director and are expected to spend time with other staff members, familiarising themselves with the workings of the charity. All trustees act as directors for any associated bodies that the Relationships Foundation maintains. 

## **Associated Bodies** 

Relationships Foundation owns 100% shares and maintains secretariat to Jubilee House Ltd which receives donations for the Keep Sunday Special project; proceeds of which are used to fund and promote research and campaigns. Jubilee House also developed © dashboards and assigned them  to The Relationships Foundation. 

## **Structure and Management** 

The charity is governed on a day to day basis by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Executive Director. Any decisions that would affect key aspects of the charity’s policy or governance are referred to the trustees to discuss at their meetings, which are held at least 4 times a year and in practice more often. In establishing governance policies and procedures, the trustees have been guided by the Charities Commission’s published advice and guidance. 

Robert Loe was CEO during the period September 1st to May 31st 2020 when he became group CEO with oversight of Relationships Foundation, Relational Schools, KSS and Jubilee House Ltd. Neil Prem was appointed as Executive Director from 1st June 2020.

Peter Lacey resigned as Chair in February 2020 having successfully provided oversight of the appointment of Jeremy Lefroy as the newly appointed Chair. The trustees thank Peter for his sterling service of many years during times of both challenge and significant progress. Jeremy Lefroy is already supporting the board and the team to realise the broader objectives of the relationships foundation. 

## **Internal Controls and Risk management** 

The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. 

The systems of internal control are designed to provide reasonable, but not absolute assurance against misstatement and loss. They include: 

- an annual budget approved by the trustees 

- regular written reports submitted by the CEO 

- regular consideration by the trustees of the finances 

- identification and management of risks. 

Every year, the trustees undertake a detailed analysis of the risks facing the Foundation and  received a report at a subsequent trustees' meeting. They agree the strategic risks facing the organisation and measures to be adopted to mitigate those risks.

Trustees' Responsibility Statement for the Year Ended 31st August 2020 

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The trustees (who are also the directors of the Relationships Foundation for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). 

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which  give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to: 

-select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

-observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP; 

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; 

-state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements;

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** 

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under  the historical cost convention. 

## **Income** 

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can  be measured reliably. 

Grant income is included when the related conditions to the grant have been met. Donations are credited to the revenue account when received. 

All other income is accounted for on a receivable basis. 

## **Expenditure** 

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings  that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use  of resources. 

- Costs of generating funds are those costs incurred in attracting voluntary and grant related income 

- Direct charitable expenditure included the direct costs of the activities and depreciation on related assets 

- Governance costs include those incurred in the governance of the charity and its assets and are primarily      associated with constitutional and statutory requirements 

- Supports costs include central functions and where such costs relate to more than one functional cost category, they have apportioned in line with direct salary costs of the  relevant service. As a smaller charity The Relationships Foundation opted out from reporting by activity to reporting  by the nature of expenditure. 

## **Tangible and intangible fixed assets** 

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over  its estimated useful life.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES - continued** 

## **Tangible and intangible fixed assets** 

Fixtures and fittings - 20% on reducing balance Computer equipment - 33% on reducing balance 

During the year, Jubilee House recognised an intangible research asset of £169,248 relating to the costs incurred in developing reporting software and templates for the work of the Relationships Foundation. As Jubilee House is to become a dormant company in the coming year, this asset was transferred to the Relationships Foundation which is now using the software and reporting templates in the course of its work. In the opinion of the directors/trustees, this asset has a life of 5 years and hence is amortised at annual rate of 20% over that period. 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. 

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for  particular restricted purposes. 

Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements. 

## **Hire purchase and leasing commitments** 

Rentals paid under operating leases are charged to the Statement of Financial Activities on a straight line basis over the period of the lease. 

## **Pension costs and other post-retirement benefits** 

The charitable company operates a defined contribution pension scheme. Contributions payable to the charitable company's pension scheme are charged to the Statement of  Financial Activities in the period to which they relate.
