## **Smile Malawi Annual Report 2022/23** Travel to Malawi from England was still very restricted in 2022 after the pandemic and South African Airways were still not flying to England. SAA did start to fly to Malawi in January 2023 from Johannesburg which will make journeys easier in the future. However, life carried on much the same in Malawi and all the children were healthy and the staff well. The manager there continued to do an excellent job and there were no concerns. It was very noticeable that costs in Malawi had escalated and we were surprised how much funding was necessary to keep the children’s home going. However, due to some very generous donors, we were able to contain this. All expenditure in Malawi was receipted and checked by the trustees. Our house mother Regina decided to leave to be with her new husband in the north but we were very fortunate to find a replacement called Esnart. She is a qualified teacher waiting for her Government placement so she came to help us with the younger children and the local community. She already made a big impact with their school work. There were lots of changes with older children moving on and 3 new young ones coming to live with us. Firstly Brian, who has been with us for 16 years, was able to go back to his long lost family after completing college and finding them in Bangwe, a suburb of Blantyre. Similarly Junior left to return to his family after completing secondary school. We tracked them down to a remote village and received help from the Chief there. Then Jo left to live with his sister Doreen, who also grew up in our care, as she is now a successful clothing designer in Lilongwe. Jo had recently passed his driving test ensuring employment in his new city. Alfred also passed his driving test and was actively looking for employment but continued to live with us as he has no family to go to. We were able to offer a home to 12-year-old twins, John and Stephen, who came to us through the Social Welfare office. Then, ten-year-old Dorothy Thepo was able to welcome her twin sister Pemphero to live with us – she was returned to us by her guardian after 6 years as she could no longer afford to care for her. Finally, twenty-year-old Ulemu finished school in the summer and started at the University of Blantyre where he is studying Community Development. Cyclone Freddy then hit southern Malawi on Sunday 12 March causing widespread devastation and deaths. Blantyre was hit very hard and 400 people died there buried in landslides and water. Roads were impassable and there was little food or electricity. Our orphanage was safe and our children were all ok but the surrounding villages were badly hit with houses destroyed and many children and vulnerable adults left without shelter, food or warmth. We bought two lorry loads of maize so that every household was given 20kg and the money to have it ground into flour, plus blankets, soya pieces and soap. We were able to raise funds from an emergency appeal and we were very happy with the incredible response from our supporters. We were able to raise over £12000 in a week and that was all spent on the aid packages which were given out immediately. The village chief gave us the names which were verified before they were all invited to the orphanage to be given their relief packages. Everyone was so grateful as they had no food and were sleeping in the local school and church.
