To advance a wider knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith, and Christian moral values, particularly, but not exclusively, by way of the production and distribution of Christian media (TV programmes, DVDs, Internet material).

The Trustees are aware of the need to demonstrate public benefit and in every area of our activity can confirm with confidence that this is happening. The Trustees confirm that they comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 and insofar as they are appropriate, to accounting standard FRS102. We raise funds to facilitate wide-scale distribution of culturally suitable media content which aims to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of all, irrespective of religious or ethnic affiliations. We prioritise the provision of resources for vulnerable women and children in Central Asia. Additionally, we facilitate the free distribution of all our materials in various languages for communities in Central Asia. We assist local Church and community leaders in their use of the electronic media to present relevant guidance and inspiration to their communities. We commission local producers to make specific programmes relevant to social issues in Central Asia, especially in the areas of domestic violence, forced prostitution and other significant needs. We fulfil a modest advocacy role in Britain for the needs of Christian and other minority groups in the region. We oversee training projects to equip local people in media production skills particularly within the “free-to-air” context. The trustees occasionally make discretionary grants to agencies helping people recover from the effects of domestic violence or exploitation.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

During the year, we produced a range of culturally-relevant films and social media products in various local languages, tackling challenging societal issues, such as domestic violence and trafficking. This work was done in several countries within the region. Kairos maintains good working relationships with a variety of local, skilled professionals and their contribution at all stages is invaluable. Here in the UK, Kairos Media Trust relies entirely on the services of qualified professionals, each of whom has considerable experience living and working in Central Asia. They donate their time to the charity free-of-charge, which enables the vast majority of funds to be used directly on projects in the region, with minimal administrative overheads.

The Trust continued to fulfil a modest advocacy role for the needs of Christian and other minority groups in its countries of operation.

Given that more than half of the population of Central Asia is under the age of 25, the Trust has continued to emphasise the production of media that is particularly suitable for children and youth. Feedback has shown us that some of our materials have been used for language teaching in schools. Teachers have particularly appreciated that Kairos produces contemporary and attractive materials that reflect local cultural sensitivities.

We continued to produce materials in a local language of a particularly marginalised and suppressed people group. Central Asia has many minority groups, this being one of the larger ones. For such populations, the presence of high quality media, professionally dubbed into their languages is a major encouragement.

We have continued to provide a training role for young people in media production skills, albeit on a smaller scale than last year. In such a region, young people are desperate to learn skills that could equip them to better support their families.

We have seen again that culturally sensitive religious materials are helping to contribute to a greater awareness and tolerance of differing religious communities. This positive effect is always welcome where radicalisation, especially among young people, is manifestly increasing.

We provided small grants to church leaders and their wives to attend major conferences in a secure and relaxing environment. For many leaders, such conferences provide the only annual break they may experience. Often their churches are too small to provide a salary and so many leaders have more than one job.

Kairos maintains a high commitment to issues that particularly affect women in the region. Domestic violence, trafficking and exploitation are all too common and Churches need to learn how better to address these issues within their communities. The film “Mahabbat” (a Kairos production from within the region) is being welcomed as a good way to raise the issues and develop strategies. We are continuing to dub this into many languages, including those outside the Central Asian countries.

Basis of independent My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given examiner’s statement by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
