To advance a wider knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith, and Christian moral values, particularly, but not exclusively, by way of the production and distribution of Christian media (TV programmes, DVDs, Internet material).

The Trustees are aware of the need to demonstrate public benefit and in every area of our activity can confirm with confidence that this is happening. The Trustees confirm that they comply with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 and insofar as they are appropriate, to accounting standard FRS102. We raise funds to facilitate wide-scale distribution of culturally suitable media content which aims to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of all, irrespective of religious or ethnic affiliations. We prioritise the provision of resources for vulnerable women and children in Central Asia. Additionally, we facilitate the free distribution of all our materials in various languages for communities in Central Asia. We assist local Church and community leaders in their use of the electronic media to present relevant guidance and inspiration to their communities. We commission local producers to make specific programmes relevant to social issues in Central Asia, especially in the areas of domestic violence, forced prostitution and other significant needs. We fulfil a modest advocacy role in Britain for the needs of Christian and other minority groups in the region. We oversee training projects to equip local people in media production skills particularly within the “free-to-air” context. The trustees occasionally make discretionary grants to agencies helping people recover from the effects of domestic violence or exploitation.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Kairos Media Trust relies entirely on the services of qualified professionals, each of whom has considerable experience living and working in Central Asia. They donate their time to the charity free-of-charge, which enables the vast majority of funds to be used directly on projects in the region, with minimal administrative overheads. 2021 was a year of post-pandemic consolidation for the Kairos associates in Central Asia.

The studio recording work continued largely as in previous years. Of particular note was the dubbing of two feature films into several local languages. One film dealt with religious persecution during the Soviet occupation of Central Asia. Younger members of the minority Christian communities have no direct experience of what for many was a dark period in history. We dubbed this particular film on the recommendation of local people who felt strongly that religious persecution was on the rise, for both Islamic and Christian minorities. It has been chilling to realise that despite the apparent liberalisation within the region since the demise of the Soviet Union, the same anti-religious mindset has been maintained by various governments.

We were able to dub several films of relevance into the local language of a particularly marginalised and suppressed people group. Their region has been ravaged by economic hardship and environmental pollution for decades. Central Asia has many minority groups, this being one of the larger ones. Life generally is hard, but for persecuted minorities it is even worse.

The other film was originally produced in Bosnia and deals with the issues of religious strife, marital violence and the plight of single mothers. These issues resonate strongly with the women of Central Asia, many of whom experience violence and abandonment.

In a similar vein, we were again able to raise funds specifically to support single mothers and vulnerable families. Food packages were distributed by a local NGO with whom we have partnered several times in the past. We were able to share that work with Kairos supporters more widely through a video that was produced of the situation.

The Trust has provided training to young people with basic media skills. During this year we focussed on animation and design and we were able to train a local woman to a good standard. Such practical skills are vital in a region where many young people see little future and desire to leave.

It remains our conviction that our culturally sensitive religious materials are helping to contribute to a greater awareness and tolerance of differing religious communities. This positive effect is always welcome where radicalisation, especially among young people, is manifestly increasing.

As in previous years, we made additional grants to local Church leaders to enable them to attend a major networking event designed to facilitate their continuing leadership development.

The Trust continued to fulfil a modest advocacy role for the needs of Christian and other minority groups in its countries of operation.

Respective The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year responsibilities of (under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the Act),as amended by s.28 trustees and examiner of the Charities Act 2006) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given examiner’s statement by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
