Principal’s Report to Northampton Sailability AGM 19[th] April 2024
1. RYA Recognised Training Centre
-
Inspection 6[th] October 2023 – was a sailing day with lots of activity. The inspection went very well with lots of positive and constructive comments. The action points have all been dealt with by adding appropriate sections into the Safety and Operating Policy for 2024.
-
Chief Instructors for 2024 – our Chief Instructors are: Sailing – Peter Windatt; Powerboat - Rob McIntyre; Keelboat - Geoff Warren. Many thanks to them for organising activities last year and planning for 2024.
-
Senior Instructors – Geoff, Jenny, Mike Garlick, Mike Hulands, Peter and Matt – did an excellent job covering all of our sessions in 2023.
-
We still need to get more volunteers trained as Instructors and Senior Instructors, so that we can continue to cover the full programme and spread the work-load further.
2. Sailing
-
Participation in 2023 – increased compared with 2022. By reducing the number of bookable slots and the amount of time allocated to each group, we aimed to improve the balance between Mondays and Fridays and to make sure the demands on volunteers were made more manageable. Saturday sailing was also enjoyed by a slightly increased number of members.
-
Racing took place on Fridays during June, July and August. Many thanks to Dave Mabbutt for organising and running the programme, ably assisted by Mike H, who sorted out the results. The race series will run in 2024 and we will be looking for more volunteers to help as Race Officers.
3. Training
-
First Aid - Many thanks to Jenny who ran four courses over the last twelve months and has one more session planned for September this year. All our Instructors and SIs are up to date with this vital qualification.
-
Sailing – Lots of informal training has taken place over the last year enabling many volunteers to improve their skills, fill log-books and re-qualify as Assistant Instructors. Sailing training days/weekends are being planned for later this year.
-
Powerboat - Rob McIntyre & Rob James have run several PB2 courses (some in conjunction with NSC), to ensure we have enough qualified powerboat drivers. Rob, Rob and Geoff will be running Safety Boat refreshers over the coming months.
Finally – many thanks to all our volunteers, both on and off the water – without you we cannot deliver sailing for our members.
Rob Jackson, Principal, Northampton Sailability RTC

DEPRECIATION POLICY
Boats and trailers are depreciated by 25% in year of purchase, then by 7.5% per annum straight line method. Equipment is written off in the year of purchase. The storeroom which is built on land leased by Northampton Sailing Club and owned by Anglian Water would normally be written of over the term of the lease but as no formal tenancy agreement exists it is being written off over an arbitrary period of 20 years on a straight line basis.
7 RISKS AND RESERVES POLICY
The main period of income for the group is during the sailing season, April to October. The Committee has therefore established a policy whereby unrestricted funds held at the end of December should be no less than the amount required to pay the Northampton Sailing Club affiliation fees and the charity's insurance for the following year. In addition, a minimum of £1,000 should be kept in reserve for unexpected maintenance costs. Further funds are held to finance the replacement and acquisition of boats.
Detailed information on income and expenditure is presented for discussion at committee meetings.
