**From:** 1[st] April 2021 **Period start date To:** 31[st] March 2022 **Period end date**

**Charity name:** The Joseph Stone Educational and Village Hall Charity

## **Charity registration number:**

## 1104060

## **Objectives and Activities**

- The objects of the Charity are to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Mosborough in the City of Sheffield by bringing together statutory, voluntary and other organisations and inhabitants in a common effort to advance the education of those inhabitants who are beyond compulsory school age and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare and for recreation and leisure time; ultimately to improve the conditions of the life of the inhabitants.

- The Charity seeks to meet its objectives through the provision of a suitable Village Hall, which encompasses the necessary facilities to meet the broadest needs of the inhabitants of the community which it serves.

- Although the main focus of the charity is the provision of the village hall it does provide other facilities, for example; four defibrillators around the village, benches in key spots and it also provides financial assistance to other organisations.

- Furthermore, the Charity aims to provide educational bursaries to suitably aged young people.

## **Achievements and Performance**

- The Charity has achieved the objectives in so far as its facilities are being used by a broad variety of user groups that return to the hall on a frequent basis.

- During the year, costs of £3,500 were incurred on cleaning, much of which was to ensure that the facilities of the village hall were Covid compliant, thereby enabling the hall to remain open when national/location restrictions allowed.

- The provision of the hall provides its user groups with a well-maintained facility where groups are able to commit with certainty to the long-term provision of a facility.

- In respect of the award of educational bursaries, the Charity continues to build links with both local secondary schools and other appropriate institutions.

## **Financial Review**

It is noted that this charity, the Joseph Stone Educational and Village Hall Charity, is intimately associated with the Joseph Stone Educational Foundation Charity, and funds are freely exchanged between the two for the good of the whole.

- During the financial year ended 31[st] March 2022 the major activity was to invest surplus cash reserves of the Charity, and that of our associated charity, The Joseph Stone Foundation. Together with its sister charity, noted previously, the two charities held investments valued at £169,047 or £160,000 at cost. These investments are spread over three investment funds all of whom specialise in investments for charities, and have been chosen because they are both low risk and ethically invested.

- In this financial year the charity has realised a small deficit (excess of expenditure over income) of £404 (prior to the release of previously capitalised costs) from the hiring out of the village hall.

- The rental income for the first four months was hit by lock downs resulting from Covid restrictions and people’s hesitation to participate in group activities. This largely explains the deficit for the year.

- The Charity had cash at bank of £9,626 at the year end, in addition to its investments, in order to ensure sufficient funds to support day-to-day cash requirements.

- The Charity and Trustees seek to minimise financial risk to the reserves of the Charity and all reserves are maintained as cash or investments with a reputable bank or investment fund.

- Our operational costs in relation to the village hall, maintenance, rates, utilities and waste, amounted to £20,711 (all costs prior excluding donations, grants and expensed capital costs from the prior year) and as such the Charity considers that it has adequate reserves to meet both these on-going costs and any exceptional costs of a capital nature that might arise.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

- The Charity is a registered charity with a registered Company of the same name, which has a registered number of 05119395.

- The Charity is governed by a Trust Deed.

- Trustees are appointed as vacancies arise and they receive no remuneration for the services they provide to the Charity.
