The Charity – How it works

Friends of All Saints’ Dogmersfield is a local charity made up of local Trustees. The charity was setup in 2004 initially from within the congregation of All Saints’ Church. The reach of this charity now extends beyond the walls of the church as we have welcomed Trustees from the local village and beyond. The mission statement of FOASD is to raise funds for the restoration, preservation, repair, maintenance, improvement and beautification of All Saints’ Church, Dogmersfield. The funds we raise at the events I mention below are all used for this purpose.

In recent years our funds raised have been instrumental in providing funds for the specialist repairs needed to the stonework. In 2022 we launched our Bell Tower Appeal and I’ll give an update on that a little later.

As usual Valery’s Treasurer’s report will give plenty of facts and figures in relation to the past financial year, from 1[st] April 2023 to 31[st] March 2024 so my update will give you an overview of our activities since the last AGM, what we’ve achieved and what our aims are for the future. I’ll also give you an update on our Bell Tower Appeal.

Looking back over this financial period from 1[st] April 2023 to 31[st] March 2024 …

The diary of our regular events is really starting to fill up. During this financial year we have held:-

Open Garden at The Dower House in May 2023 – this was the second event of this nature kindly hosted by Richard and Anne-Marie Revell and is a wonderfully popular event, both locally and also with the National Gardens Scheme. What a fantastic time of year to view the arboretum which was splendidly in flower! The tea and cake stall is a very busy one at this event but it’s worth all the hard work!

The Coronation Village Duck Race in June 2023 – we decided to coincide the Duck Race with the Coronation and this turned out to be a wonderful idea with colourful flags, with plenty of red, white and blue bunting, and also a Coronation cake! Again the ‘bring your own picnic’ format proved to be very popular and we are grateful to Lucy and Omar for hosting again at Catherine of Aragon. We were also treated to music by Alastair’s band which went down a treat.

Royal Ascot Ladies Day at the Four Seasons in June 2023. This is always a small yet sophisticated event at the Four Seasons. 2023 saw us hold this event in a different room at the Four Seasons, which worked really well and had a much more ‘sociable’ feel to it. We were able to once again make use of the TV facilities at the Four Seasons and follow the racing with interest. We had many winners to our small sweepstakes on each race! All the ladies were dressed in their finest, many sporting fantastic hats!

We’ve also had two Curry & Quiz nights at the Queens Head in October 2023 and March 2024 and we’re so grateful for Fabian’s support. These are great fun and we always have a full-house.

We’re also so grateful to Anne-Marie and Richard Revell, and all their family, for hosting the Bonfre Party in November 2023. This is a wonderful event and is always well attended by many local families. With plenty of mulled wine, hot dogs, home made soup on offer together with a roaring bonfire what more could you wish for?!

Our Bell Tower Appeal - Update

You’ll no doubt be aware of our Bell Tower Appeal. This has been quite slow going in terms of arranging the structural surveys and inspections but we have been in constant contact with the Inspecting Architect and Structural Engineer and I’m pleased to report that we have recently been advised that following the tests it has been confirmed that our tower can support the additional bells we want to install as part of this project. So, approvals permitting, we’ll be moving from a 3 bell tower to a 6 bell tower! This is great news as our ambition is to provide training for bell ringers who would like to ring 6 bells. We’re also looking at installing some kitchenette facilities to provide the local community with a warm hub and friendly place to visit for anyone who wishes to see a friendly face or two.

We’ve been overwhelmed by the fantastic response we’ve received to this appeal. It would appear that the bells really do touch people’s hearts. We’ve had some wonderful donations and we’re so grateful for each and every one.

The next stage of this process is to furnish the Diocese with our structural survey and plans so that we can obtain a Faculty (permission) from them. This is due to be done within the next few weeks. Unfortunately all these things seem to be slow moving, but please be assured our team of people working on this project are trying to move things along as quickly as we can each step of the way. We’ve pencilled in the foundry for the end of next year to get started on the new bells and also the repair of the old bells.

Turning to the future …

The aim is to continue to raise funds for the remaining monies needed for this project. We’ll be requesting funding from Grant Providers once we receive the permission from the Diocese and we’re really hopeful that we’ll be successful in one or two of our applications.

Thanks

Firstly I would like to take the opportunity to thank every one of our supporters. I’m sure you’ll agree when we’ve gone through Valery’s report that for a small local village charity, the amounts we raise throughout the year are incredible, and that can only be achieved with your support – so thank you! Also, we really appreciate the help of those in the church who assist with many of the events and various fundraising throughout the year. I would like to specifically thank Robert and Caroline Dixon who have been so supportive in both the Bell Tower Project and also planning the classical concert we held in the summer of 2024 - more details in next year’s AGM!

Lastly, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank every one of our committee members (and very often their family and friends!) for their tireless help with all the events we hold. I really feel that we have a committee who can each bring different strengths to what we do, and this has led to some really successful fundraising events this year.

We would also like to thank all our members, local residents and everyone at the church for supporting and helping us.

This is all a collaboration and I really feel that’s what is making each event so successful.
