Age UK Readlng Happy Feet provides a local toenail cutting wvicè to peop￿ over the age of 50, wl

When bckdown started in March 2020 it cane to Itght ihat many elderly peopk were unabb to leave their
home independentty to go out arKI do their shopping as they had to isolate. So we decKded to Set up a t
of trained and vetted volunteers ccxjfd go and shop for ttr￿. This was set up quKe qulckty and was a
work in pr(>3ress as we went akng. We st*ted with shop and then buiN the service ar(￿d lh8 needs
of the cllent.
Afterth8 first thkdrAvn was llfted the servlce still remained In place bLrt a gr&* d8al of clients returned to
stKp fcf Ihemsetves. It was attr￿S poknt that we looked al th8 Im[￿lanCe of th8 shopping serv￿* forclients
wh) ¢￿k1 not shop forthemselves and k￿ked at waysthat we could contkmje Wtlh this arKI offer tt as part
of the AUKR service.
By December 2020 set In place a smaN SI￿ng charge for those that wanted to continue to bo
supported by AUKR and its voluntsers.
The seprfice runs on a much smaller scal8 rthv Is great￿ appreciated by those that use IL We have
regular clients arKI vdmt8ers.
Plans forthe future were to womote the service on a wider scale, recruit m(re voluntsers and in tum off
a wider to the communty. Hcfyvever It has tr￿n very difficutt to recruit volunteers In 2023 so we
ove bew unable to expand the service. We 6ttll akn to expand the ser4vice when we can recrutt morB
voluntws.

year before. a drop of 1￿10 over the previous year. Of the total contacts, 84% were phone ¢81Ls and 16%
were face b f8¢ewhereas in the kY8ViOUS year 92 10 contsGts were calls and 8% were face to face. This
the shift that has b8com8 more pr8val8nt in 2023 ff￿1¢ating a swing towards face to face visits where the

Volunteer vOlUr￿ show a 12DA decline over previous year. Most volunteers who left either retired (r
decided against volunteerlng after the death of their service user and a few stsrted n8w Iw8S Out of
Reading. Some existing long-term vdunleers have taken on addttional telephone service users to fill the
gap due to volunteer shortages 8xp8d8ncèd. Efforts Continue to increase the volunteer recruitment efforts
by attracting a young8r deffK¥Jraphlc. Thls has its own ohallenges as many are working full time so have
limrted availabilty to tthend Ihough k88n to gtve to the communty.
GARDENING
Gardering contlnues to be a popular project and Is growlng slNly. W8 hope to add our Ihird. and perhaps
fourth gardener lo our ranks in the comlng months.
HOMESHARE
We still believe this exciting new project will b8 a great OPFÉTiunty fcff peopk in Reading and is a chance
for us to make a huge change in a clienvs day to day qualty of lrfe. It has been slower and more drffic
than we hO￿d to get thks woiect offtheground. Although we made a matchit did not persisl due to reasons
b8yond our control. We are still exploring new matches seeking adequate funding to boctst this project
and r8alty 8Stablish it as part of Age UK Reading's core offer.
CARER'S INFORMATION AND ADvice
Sincè Novemb8r 2022 we have held the Carerfs infOmatic￿ aThJ AdvrE contract alongside our partners.
Ap UK Barkshire. Communicare and Reading Mencap. We have deveknped and improved the serv
si?rNficantty since November and contnue to do so.

PARTNERSHIP WORKING
We continue to value our cbse partnerships with olher local charities in the area. We continue to be active
in the reading Dementia Partsiershlp, the Lonellness and Soclal1gKAalk)n group, RAN. and other loc
aCfvi￿ groups. We have also ken more active in (￿r thal fundirKJ partnerships this year, working wilh
others to win tenders through the c￿r￿lIS 'Closiro the Gap" funding round as well as our successfLI
tender to win the Carers l and A. We vakje the strength that comes from unity as well as the highty valued
exp&￿se that partnèrs bring to the table. Without our pathers we couky rnt provide the comprehensNe
and hollstic seNic8 that we offer to local people.
Walford Hall
We continue to utilze Walford Hall as our base of operatKJns and it seems to be w¢Jrking wellfor the charity.
We have adapted and improved how we use upstsirs space we are now using the space
dowrtstairs to run 3 separate clubs. RAB have proven theMse￿e$ friendty and reSpCfflsib￿ landkfds wilh
whom we malntain a positive relat￿r￿hip. We hope to reman in Walford Hall in the medium tsmi.
FUTURE PLANS
We are continuing to work trwards achieving financial stability after covid. It is taking than we
had hoped but direction of travel is going weN. Our income gen￿aing servic8s ar8 growing and t)ur
fundraising prroramme is in full swing. We are part way thr￿ our 3 year strat8gy and our small but
committed board is YKKking hard to the future. We hope to remain in our current
ccmmmodation in the short to medium term and have a clear path. kid out in our strategy as we
move forward.
CONTINUITY OF FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
During thk4 ￿rIOd we exp8rl8nced tho retlrement of our long tsmi fhance officer and Company
Sacretary at Christmas of 2022. Our plans were to proceed with an upgraded tookkeew and regular
rnonthty oversbJht frcffn a hxal acC￿ntanCY fim. We also madè plans at this timo to switch
financial systems fffjm a saries of weadsheèts to the well-known "Xero. applScalion which would
make the cwation mcfe eff icient and rgPQrting ea5*r.
However, our Bookkeeper exF)erienced a signrfi¢8nt health issue over the same Christmas period and
had to resign in Ihe new year leaving us for a perh%1 of several months wtthout continuty of financial
staff. Th8 acC￿ntancY fim supported us through this time with basic bookkeeping and payroll. Whi151
the challenges and complicalions created are being overcome with the appointrnent of a new finan
off icer, this tocA( longer than anticipated and has taken longer than planned.
