Achievements And Performance

Summary of the DSMIG annual activities

Educational opportunities

An annual winter meeting for healthcare professionals focussing on the health needs of people with Down Syndrome took place on 11[th] November 2023 and was enjoyed by over 90 attendees.

A further health education session was run by the DSMIG in collaboration with BAPA (the British Association of Paediatric Audiologists) and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) annual conference. This took place in Birmingham on 27th March 2024 and had a theme on hearing loss in Down Syndrome. This session was targeted at a wider paediatric audience and received positive feedback. The DSMIG had responsibility for review of abstracts and speakers for this conference.

Oversight of the Jennifer Dennis Award – this bi-annual award of £250 is awarded for research in Down Syndrome. Research applicants are invited to apply with the 2 top shortlisted candidates invited to present at the Winter meeting, with 1 winner selected by the judging panel. (This was awarded in 2022 and 2024 and not in this financial year).

Membership

The DSMIG has a membership of over 100 health professionals, all with an interest in Down Syndrome, allowing a network to share health information, queries and give advice and research opportunities.

The charity steering group is made up of volunteers, many of whom have a background in health and all who have an interest in Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome Growth Charts

DSMIG has been designated by the MRC (Medical Research Council) as sub-licensee for the data on which Down Growth Charts are based, specifically for children under 18. In this financial year, work continued to expand the accessibility of this chart with license selling to individual hospital trusts and to collaborate with the RCPCH as part of a wider electronic package of growth charts. This is also a source of income for the DSMIG.

Contribution to the Down Syndrome Act

The Act was given Royal Assent in 2022, and guidance was requested to enable action. DSMIG chair Jill Ellis and other members contributed stakeholder information to inform The Act and

Financial Review

For the year ended 31 March 2024, total income amounted to £29,663 (2023: £12,328). The main sources of income were from membership, meeting income, Growth Chart revenue and additional secretarial costs paid by the DSA.

Total outgoing costs for the year amounted to £13,719 (2023: £2,421). The largest outgoing costs were the cost of hosting the winter meeting. This facility is no longer available to hire for our event. The cost of hosting will go up in 2024/25 significantly as the previous venue is no longer available and so will be held at the Royal Society of Medicine. The cost of attending for delegates will remain the same.
