|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | The Sussex Bat Group was formed in 1984 to help conserve bats in East and West Sussex. The Group is a registered charity made up of volunteers who share a passion for bats. We are affiliated with the Bat Conservation Trust. Bats are facing serious population declines across the UK. There is a bat group in nearly every county working to help reverse this decline. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
The aims of the Sussex Bat Group are to: ▪ Help conserve bats and their habitat. ▪ Raise awareness of bats and their conservation. These aims are achieved by: ▪ Recording and monitoring bat populations in Sussex. ▪ Assisting Natural England with roost visits where threats to bats may exist. ▪ Carrying out conservation projects such as bat box schemes, improving roost sites or opening and protecting potential sites. ▪ Organising talks and educational events throughout the year. ▪ Providing a care and rescue service for sick and injured bats, with the backup of permanent bat hospitals. ▪ Producing a regular newsletter - The Belfry |
| Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit |

Achievements and Performance
| SORP reference | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
Para 1.20 | Sussex Bat Group (SBG) is affiliated to the Bat Conservation Trust. Its members are dedicated to the conservation of the bats of Sussex and to increasing general awareness of bat conservation. For many years, SBG has been monitoring the presence of small numbers of greater horseshoe bats in Sussex, primarily in hibernation sites, and it was SBG members who recently discovered this highly significant pioneering breeding colony. During the last century, greater horseshoe bat numbers fell by over 90% in Britain, by some estimates, and the species became confined to parts of Wales and south-west England. Today, however, there is some much-needed good news. The population is showing signs of recovery, with small colonies now found outside of this core area. This includes one pioneer breeding colony recently discovered in an old stable block in Sussex a sign of a possible eastward spread. In 2021 the Sussex Bat Group in partnership with the Vincent Wild Trust launched the Sussex bat Appeal. The two organisations were |
given nine months to raise the purchase price of £200,000 to secure ownership and £150,000 to fund renovation work. The West Sussex site will be owned by Vincent Wildlife Trust as a bat roost in perpetuity. It will be managed by the Trust in conjunction with the Sussex Bat Group. Right now, this is probably the most important greater horseshoe bat roost site in Britain and the most significant find since the group was formed in 1984. The halt of biodiversity decline and species recovery programmes benefit society as a whole,

Para 1.21 | Balance Current A/C & Deposit Account £7,411.56 |
| Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held |
Para 1.22 | We had a policy of holding between £5-£10k in reserve for a specific conservation-based project |
| Amount of reserves held | Para 1.22 | Zero |
| Reasons for holding zero reserves |
Para 1.22 | We are currently holding no reserves as it has been donated to the Sussex Bat Appeal for the safeguarding of the Greater horseshoe bat roost in Sussex |
| Details of fund materially in deficit |
Para 1.24 | Zero |
| Explanation of any uncertainties about the charity continuing as a going concern |
Para 1.23 | Cost of living has seen donations decrease. Committee members are working as volunteers to operate the charity and we are very reliant on a few key members to keep fundraising, undertaking site visits and help manage the operation of the charity. Most committee members have full time employment. The passing of our founder in 2023 and a period of significant illness for a trustee, the resignation of a committee member following illness and Covid has meant more pressure on other committee members. Some committee members have also re-located. We are currently trying to actively engage new members |

| The charity’s principal sources of funds (including any fundraising) |
Para 1.47 | In 2021 / 2022 we launched a fundraising page via Just giving, had auctions, wrote to potential supporters Sussex Bat Appeal-Help us create a safe haven for horseshoe bats-JustGiving In previous years our income has never exceeded £3000.00 but in the last financial year it has increased to £45,478.13 and this year is has increased £26319.32. As a charity operated solely by volunteers this is a significant step change in terms of financial management and auditing. |
|---|---|---|
| Investment policy and objectives including any social investment policy adopted |
Para 1.46 | N/A |
| A description of the principal risks facing the charity |
Para 1.46 | Lack of volunteers to help run the administration of a small charity which launched a successful appeal. This has meant some of our other routine activities such as website updates, newsletters and time for public engagement has been more restricted as we are focusing on the appeal. This is actively acknowledged through our regular committee meetings and lack of volunteer time is the main current risk. |

Sussex Bat Group accounts 1.10.22 – 30.9.23
Welcome to the overview of our accounts for 2022/2023
This has been another exceptional year for the Sussex Bat Group in terms of income due to the Sussex Bat Appeal. Key highlights and explanations of the transactions are as follows:
Due to our income being more than £25,000 we need to implement the following to comply with the charity commission rules:
Income over £25,000
You must answer questions about your charity in an annual return.
You will need to get your accounts checked and provide copies of your:
-
trustee annual report (this isn’t just the treasurer (Stephanie Murphy, it will be a combined report by all trustees which includes Amanda Millar and Sheila Wright and will include a lot more detail on the Sussex Bat Appeal)
-
accounts
-
independent examiner’s report (this has been requested through an external source and upon provision of these draft accounts we hope to secure a suitable reviewer). However, we welcome suggestions from bat group members.
Income
- Income from subscriptions and associated donations when members are renewing was £1158 . Income from donations was £111 and for walks and talks that was not specifically associated with the Sussex Bat Appeal. This is slightly less than last year. It is acknowledged that the separation of donations and subscriptions is tricky as members often round up their fee. Technically we should be able to attribute what proportion is subscription and which is donation. Members pay £8 if they have a paper copy Belfy and £6 if they have an electronic copy but often the fee is £10
or more. It has been discussed with the membership secretary the benefit of potentially switching to PayPal for subscriptions to reduce administrative burden and split out donations and subscriptions more adequately.
-
We had a large fundraising effort for the Sussex Bat Appeal again which included sales at the Southeast Conference, National Bat Conference through using Square (contactless payment) and cash and, also direct sales of merchandise commissioned through Creature Candy. We also had another group auction. Income to the current account that was specifically associated with the Sussex Bat Appeal was £5,328.19. All these funds were transferred to the Sussex Bat Group Deposit Account.
-
Income directly into the Deposit Account for the Sussex Bat Appeal was £19,582.43. This was primarily from the Sussex Bat Group Just Giving Page and well done to those doing specific fundraising activities. Other sources of funding included CAF, Bat Groups and Social Media Fundraising via Facebook / PayPal.
-
Sussex Bat Appeal has finished as of 13.9.23. VWT have a capital grant for the species recovery programme ‘horseshoe heading east’. This project will facilitate range recovery and establish a viable population of greater horseshoe bats in suitable areas of south-east England, through a combination of roost creation, habitat enhancement and improved landscape connectivity to enable their dispersal, link maternity sites, hibernation sites and increase breeding success. The Lodsworth Sussex Bat Appeal Site was initiated by the late Tony Hutson, founder of the Sussex Bat Group in 1984. As part of our legacy to Tony, we will continue fundraising for the Hutson Hide, a bat visitor / education hide at the Lodsworth site as a legacy to Tony for all the work he has done for conservation of bats in Sussex, UK and worldwide.
-
Total income for the year was £26,319.32.
Expenditure
-
Our total expenditure for 2022_2023 was £999.25.
-
This year was an anomaly. We didn’t have Belfy expenses as due to unfortunate circumstances we were not able to provide one for our members, but we are working hard to ensure that publications of the Belfy for our members is a priority.
-
We also have not funded the bat hospital as Amanda has been using money from running her courses (£745), HAO fundraising £300, HAO bat / bee talks £200, Knepp £150, Surrey Bat Group £200 to fund the hospital independently. Amanda has also received £295 misc. donations (people
bringing injured bats). This totals £1890. By contrast, Amanda has incurred expenses of £2112 (vets fees, meal worms, kitchen towels and travel expenses). We would like to support Amanda more regularly given the amount of effort she puts into re-habilitating bats and will seek to discuss with Amanda how people can make donations perhaps via Just Giving for the bat hospital and we can re-imburse.
-
This financial year SxBG will pay for the new Batzebo roof which is £182. Now the fundraising for the Sussex Bat Appeal is complete, we will see to integrate more fully again. It needs to be acknowledged that Amanda is now the only bat hospital in Sussex and Surrey, so her time and expenses are increasing significantly.
-
We transferred, in total, to the Vincent Wildlife Trust £22,832.16 from the Deposit Account for the Sussex Bat Appeal.
The relevant paperwork including receipts and all bank statements are available for members’ scrutiny at the AGM, can be presented online during the meeting or can be requested electronically.
