BASINGSTOKE AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY ACCOUNTS FOR YEAR ENDED
30 JUNE, 2024
CHARITY NUMBER 1103166
Basingstoke Amateur Operatic Society – Year Ended 30 June, 2024 Trustees Report
The trustee presents the accounts for the year ended 30 June, 2024
Structure, governance and management
The Basingstoke Amateur Operatic Society, 26 Stilwell Close, Yately, Hampshire GU46 6XH, is registered with the Charities Commissioners No. 1103166 and constituted by Deed of Trust. The charity is administered by its management committee who meet on a regular basis during the year. Andrew Wood, the treasurer, is also a charity trustee. The charity is also a member of the National Dramatic and Operatic Association (NODA) which provides helpful advice and guidance to amateur societies and individuals. New trustees are elected at the AGM. The management of the charity have examined the major risks to which the society is exposed and confirm that systems are in place to mitigate our exposure to the major risks.
Objectives and activities
The society was registered with the Charity Commissioners on 13 April, 2004. Its objectives are to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education by the presentation of musical productions. The focus of its activities remains the main musical production. They welcome membership regardless of personal background, faith, gender or personal circumstance to promote openness and the sharing of skills and life experiences. They also encourage people to help out behind the scenes as well as to be involved with the performance to support and educate in all aspects of the theatre.
Achievements and performance
The main achievements of this year were:
Godspell, Central Studio, July 2023 BAOS Limelight Anything Goes, QM Hall, October 2023 Evita, The Haymarket, March 2024 Disney’s High School Musical (24 Hour Musical), QM Hall, April 2024
Financial Review
The results of the year are set out on pages 5-7. The society is in a better position after this financial year when compared to last with successful fundraising attempts such as the 24 hour musical. It is important to maintain the focus on fundraising in the upcoming year as shows are becoming increasingly more challenging to finance. It is the policy of the charity to maintain its free reserves at a level which equates to between 3 and 6 months’ unrestricted expenditure (~£20,000). This provides sufficient funds to cover management, administration and support costs and to respond to emergency needs which arise from time to time.
Future Plans (as of 1[st] July 2024)
The coming year will see BAOS perform:
Avenue Q, Central Studio, July 2024 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Haymarket, March 2025 24 Hour Musical (TBD), TBC, April 2025

Independent Examiner’s Report
Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Basingstoke Amateur Operatic Society
I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June, 2024 which are set out on pages 5 to 7.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner.
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 43(2) of the Charities Act 1993 (the 1993 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
Examine the accounts under section 43 of the 1993 Act;
-
To follow the procedure laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 43(7)(b) of the 1993 Act); and
-
To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of the Examiner’s Report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair” view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below:
Independent Examiner’s Statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 41 of the Act; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met.
-
To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
