Trustees, Annual Report for the period
From 1st January 2023 to 31st January 2023
Charity name: Rowan Arniour-Brown Memorial Trust Fund
Charity registration number: 1102888
Objectives and Activities
The Rowdn Armour-Brown Memorial Trust Fund, also known as the RAB Trus(
offers supplementary support and assistance to registered full and part-time
students enrolled on violin making and l>owed instrument restorationlrepair courses
within the Ulc
We provide an annual award opportunity to provide assistance to registered
students for purchasing items required for furthering their development in the craft
of making, repairing and restoring violin and bowed instruments. Additionally the
Trust provides numerous opportunities throughout the year for the enrolled
students to purchase items fundamental to their studies and instrument making
development at low cost. We also support registered students by facilitating work
experience placements and participation in bowed instrument courses.
Achievements and Perfomlance
There are three violin and bowed instruments colleges within the United Kingdom -
Newark Wiolin Making School, Merton College and West Dean College. The Trust
was able to assist 14 students by making awards combining of cash awards for tool
purchases, the provision of tools directly where possible, study books.
supplementsl instrument courses and workshop placements for experience within a
luthier or shop.
The Tèust was bequeathed several workshop tool donations this year which led to
our tool and instrument sales being more significant in size than we usually
experience which enabled us to benefit the students to a greater extent than usual
and also bolster our funding for future awards.
The Trust was also able to combine a special tool sale with a student forum at the
annual Lutherie event in Newark allowing RAB trustees the opportunity to assist
students not only in tool provision but also offer expert advice and facilitate
networking. The Trust provided travel assistance for students travelling from Merton
College and West Dean College to the event.
The Trust has additionally worked with the British Violin Makers Association {BVMA)
to provide spaces for RAB Trust award students on their popular and often
oversubscribed setup and bow making courses for which the Trust is grateful.

The Trust also sold a "round robin" violin that several of the Trustees had
participated in making since the COVID lockdown and this generated a significant
inflow for the Trnst adding to what was an exceptional year for fundraising.
Financial Review
The Trust funds itself through the sale of donations received usually in bequests.
These bequest donations are generally workshop clearances which may include
instruments, books and violin making tools. The Trust also receives monetary
donations with one supporter providbng a regular income to the Trust for which we
are immensely grateful.
The RAB Trust financial year runs from January 2023 to December 2023 and has an
overall cash balance of £48,887 of which £31,821 is held on deposit including
reserves.
Due to the intemiittent nature by which the Trust receives income through bequests
or donations the funds held on deposit represent a significant reseNe upon which
to draw upon if so required.
This financial year (2023) the RAB Trust has received an income of £26.591 against
total expenditure of £9302 generating a net income of £17,289.
Our overall cash balance at the close of December 2023 is £48,887 upon a previous
year close of £31,598. As mentioned in the previous section the Trust has
experienced an unusual year with regard to bequeathed donations but also
significantly with the sale of the RAB Trust "round robin" violin which in itself
raised a net amount of £9120 for the Trust.
The income received from instrument and t(￿lS sales amounted to £20,187 in total
for the year with the afore-mentioned violin sale representing almost half that sum.
The Trust has also received a monetsry income of £4177 from donors and £2000
from the Educational Services.
The RAB Trust had made awards of £6676 to assist 14 students across 3 national
colleges - Newark Wiolin Making School. Merton College and West Dean College. In
addition to that monetary sum the Trust has also awarded tools, books and travel
expenses to students.
