John Rayment As well as the 7 Trustees there are additional members of a management committee covering (amongst others) the following areas 1. Treasurer 2. Marketing 3. Bookings/Public liaison 4. Sales 5. Training 6. Crewing The Trustees hold meetings as and when required to discuss urgent matters but will always hold a minimum of two meetings per annum. The wider management committee holds monthly meetings. When Trustees are recruited expertise and experience is sought from those who have knowledge of Thames Sailing Barges, the wider area of sailing and also those who have no experience of these but who have expertise in other important areas gained in their professional lives. ## Activities and objectives in the year The period covered by this report was an extremely busy one over the whole of the Trust’s activities. Both barges, Pudge and Centaur were out sailing regularly during our season (April to October). The trips ranged from one day sails, through weekends, and cruises lasting a few days to a couple of weeks. There was a mixture of public sails and also private hires. The highlight was Pudge taking part in the 85[th] Commemoration of the evacuation of Dunkirk, arranged by the Little Ships of Dunkirk Association. The trip was extremely well received by the public and there was an enormous interest generated whilst she was moored in Dunkirk. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) the weather delayed the return journey by a few days but the whole trip was extremely successful. Pudge also operated out of Queenborough for a few weeks which opened up different routes and again was well received. Centaur concentrated on shorter sails and was unfortunately hindered by bad weather in the early part of the season. Pudge was also a regular in the Thames Barge races held throughout the summer and ended up in 1[st] place in the Coasting Barges category and 4[th] place overall. As well as engaging with the public on the sails there were numerous other activities which helped inform the public about the Trust, the work it does and the barges we own. Some of the Trustees and other volunteers give regular talks to various groups (e.g. U3A, W.I., Sailing groups). The Trust continued with its very successful Children’s Activity Days during the school holidays and introduced two new days this year involving a storyteller and art workshops. There has also been visits by local groups e.g. scouts and a continuation of the links established with the Blackwater Sailing Club. On the maintenance side Pudge continued to have worked carried out following on from the major refit a couple of years ago. The skippers and passenger cabins were upgraded and a new topmast was required. Other work is mentioned below. Centaur was kept ticking over with routine maintenance. The Trustees and Management Committee have made the decision to carry out a major refurbishment subject to the necessary funds being available. An application to the Heritage Lottery Fund has been made for a grant to facilitate these works. We were successful at the first stage and are now actively working with HLF on the next stage, although any work will not start until latter part of 2027. Sailorman was scheduled to go into drydock and be surveyed during 2025 but this was delayed until 2026. The training programme which was established to develop third hands, mates and eventually skippers, was active throughout the year and received a boost with a grant of £19,600 from Trinity House. Financial Performance - TSBT Sailing & Charters is a wholly owned subsidiary of TSBT - It’s a mutual company which allows commercial activity from which the Trust benefits - Any surplus made by S&C can be donated back to the Trust by way of a Gift Aid Donation ## **Key Performance Indicators** ## **2025 Key Points** Bank balances remain good. - The £200k deposited during 2024 was kept as a low-risk long term deposit throughout the year generating a reasonable amount of interest income. - Core sailing income was down in 2025 but we received more in grants and donations. - Certain areas of expenditure were higher in line with the general inflationary pressures. - Considerable amount spent on major works for Pudge. - Comparison with 2024 is unfair as the Trust received a very large legacy. (£250k) during 2024 and there was no matching legacy in 2025.
