The following sitting directors will serve until the forthcoming A.G.M. on Sunday, 22 September 2024: Anil Velu, layan Pillai, Anil Edavana, Aji Velu, Mohanadas Madhavanandan, Nishar Viswanath and Aloysius Mathew. Yearly subscription can now be paid by standing order or direct debit. Despite financial constraints, the membership fee has remained at £20 since 2012. Community and faith-based groups use Kerala House regularly at preferential rates. Location, easy access by public transport and affordable rates has been the prime reasons for this increase. Kerala House is also available for members of the local community for wakes and other funeral gathering5 and rituals. Many members have used this service in the last year as it 15 located within a short distance from Manor Park Ciernatorium. Although we offer the premises free of charge, all users havee donated money to the up-keeping of Kerala House. The free booking of Kerala House for life members was extended to 30 December 2023. Any life members who hasnt yet to used their free booking have now lost this privilege. Arts. MAUK Chllanka: Dancets Forum In lune 2023 we restarted Bharathanatyam Classes. The classes are designed for children and adults who are beginners or returning to Bharathanatyam after a long time. Through high-quality teaching, students can explore and refine a range of adavu (steps), improve their coordination and build their stamina as they explore the fundamentals of movement technique and rhythm. The class, taught in Kalashethra style by Ms Jasllne Shimmy Antony, currently has twenty one stuents. nmi. Sessions occur every few months, leaving participants time to read the selected text. In 2023, texts discussed included Haridwarle manikal muzhangunnu by M Mukundan, Oru sankeerthanam pole by Perembadavam Sreedharan, Manj by M T Vasudevan Nair, Ini njan urangatte by P K Balakrishnan Akshara currently has 49 Malayalam enthusiasts from across the globe as active members. Onasathaya Every year, M.A.U.K. volunteers prepare the scrumptious Sadhya we senie under the supervision of the Elders. In 2023, 260 home-cooked Sadhyas were served on Saturday, 03 Septsmber, at Trinity Centre in East London. We thank all our volunteers for the hard work each year they have put in to keep this tradition alive. M.A.U.K. Onasadhya has charity at heart. Every year, we add a nominal fee to the cost of the Sadhya to provide a similar nurnber of Sadhyas in orphanages and care homes in Kerala on the same day. In 2023, we provided over175 Sadhyas at Nalla Samarayan A5rasam in Kanjirapally, Kottayam. Onasadhya was led by MAUK volunteer Nihas Rawthey and the director in charge was Aloysius Mathew pomonam 2023 Onam is the celebration of oneness. Since the early1970s, M.A.U.K. has been celebrating Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, in grand splendour every year without fail. The celebration has become a much-revered date in the calendar of the U.K. Malayalees and is one of the largest and most significant social gatherings of Malayalees in the U.K. Jlr The 2023 festivities took place on Sunday, September17th, 2023, at Redbridge Town Hall in Ilford, drew a crowd of 400 The event featured captivating perforniances by visiting artists frorn Kerala and notable local musicians and dancers. The lineup included Christakala, Santosh Njarakkal, Kalabhavan Joshy Baiju lose, and Rels Robson. The event was hels as a fundraiser for MAUK Gowri Project an initative by Thanal The director in charge of the celebration was Aji Gangadhaian, and the Volunteer Lead was Praseeda Gopa AIAVII ()1 li ii)I ljll I I Q>Q3 BHAIATHAYAMATYAM: THE NEWHAM IXINIECTIOMS In 2023, MAUK collaborated with Newham Heritage Month to explore the role of the London Borough of Newham in popularising Bharatanatyam in the UK. With funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, our volunteers conducted research and documented the spread of the relatively unknown South Indian art form Bharathanatyam in Newham from the mid-1980s to the 1990$. During this period. Bharathanatyam gained popularity in the UK as a leading South Asian art form, with many local artists achieving international recognition through traditional, contemporary, and collaborative productions. MAUK volunteers researched on how support from local authorities and other statutory bodies helped the classes flourish in community centres and church halls. This support provided opportunities for South Asian youth to learn about their heritage while also instilling discipline and a sense of belonging during a time when racial harassment was all too common in their live5. MAUK Volunteers conducted interviews with Bharatanatyam exponents and class coordinators to gain a better understanding of the key players and their motivation for propagating the art form in the UK. 'Dances of Newham, showcased the different dance genres represented in Newham, with a prominent focus on Bharathanatyam. Part 2: 'Sounds of Newham, featured a dance floor with a live DJ that showcased the influence of ethnic music. This promoted inclusiveness and brought together people from various cultures to dance to a wide range of ethnic musical genres. The DJ teamed up with the MAUK Percussion group to perform live instrumental music alongside the dance tracks, creating a unique and inspiring musical experience. IIIDIAN INDEPENDEN1% DAY CELEBIATION As usual, MAUI4 represented the Malayalee Community at the Independence Day Celebration organised by the High Commission of India, along with Indian Diaspora organisations. The grand celebration was held at Navnat Centre in Hayes, Middlesex on XX August 2023, attracting thousands of Indians and supporters of India from across Europe. The event commenced at 11 AM with the flag hoisting ceremony by the High Commission and finished at 4 PM. MAUK'S stall at the event provided freshly cooked dosa and chutney, sweet and savoury snacks, and lime juice throughout the day. MAUK artists Dona Rajesh and Preethy Sukush performed Mohiniattarn. These issues range from visa scams, immigration crimes, employment and accommodation-related concerns, food shortages, and homelessness to domestic violence, loneliness, and mental health problems. M.A.U.K. is at the forefront of addressing these issues. and the number of people seeking help from M.A.U.K. is increasing. To assist those in need, we have assembled a team of experienced volunteers. Currently, on average, our volunteers deal with three to four such cases every week. However, achieving the desired outcomes for the callers is not always possible due to financial, legal, and medical limitations. Nonetheless, we strive to provide a sympathetic, non-judgmental listening ear, whieh most callers find soothing and reassuring. Sometimes, that's all it takes to help someone through a difficult time. Kerala House Fund - MAUK directors wish to setaside funds periodically from the surpluses, to fund major repairs,

Kerala OutReach Fund - MAUK directors setaside funds periodically from the surpluses generated from fundraising

22 Honorary Audit completed by HARIDAS BHASKARAN Final Accounts signed off by MAATMANN ACCOUNTANTS, HARLOW ## **The Board of Directors Malayalee Association of the UK (MA UK) Honorary Audit Report For the Year Ended 31 December 2023** ## **Date: 10 August 2024** ## **Introduction** I am pleased to present the Honorary Audit Report for the Malayalee Association of the UK (MA UK) for the fiscal year ended 31 December 2023. This report is based on the financial information provided and summarizes my observations and findings from the audit process. As this is an honorary audit, it is important to note that the procedures performed were limited in scope and were not conducted in accordance with full professional audit standards. ## **Scope of the Audit** The scope of this honorary audit involved reviewing key financial statements, transactions, and internal control procedures of MA UK for the period from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2023. The objective was to provide limited assurance regarding the accuracy and reliability of the financial information disclosed by the charity. ## **Management Responsibilities** The responsibility for maintaining accurate financial records and preparing reliable financial statements rests with the Board of Directors of MA UK. My honorary audit does not relieve the Board of these responsibilities, and the findings herein are based on the limited scope of the procedures performed. ## **Audit Findings** ## 1. **Financial Statements** Upon review of the financial statements of MA UK for the year ended 31 December 2023, no material misstatements or inaccuracies were identified. The financial statements present a fair and accurate reflection of the charity’s financial position as of 31 December 2023. ## 2. **Income and Expenditure** A review of over 300 income and expenditure transactions was conducted during the audit period. These transactions were supported by appropriate documentation and properly recorded in the accounting system. However, there is a need to enhance the clarity of narratives and references in the ledgers and bank statements to improve transparency and traceability. ## 3. **Compliance with Legal and Regulatory Requirements** My review indicates that MA UK has generally complied with applicable legal and regulatory requirements relevant to its operations. However, given the honorary nature of this audit, detailed compliance testing was not performed, and this assessment is based on the information provided. ## 4. **Internal Controls** The internal controls in place at MA UK appear to be adequate for a charity of its size and nature. Nevertheless, given the limited scope of this audit, full assurance on the effectiveness of internal controls cannot be provided. ## **Observations & Recommendations** While the honorary audit did not uncover any significant issues, I would like to suggest the following recommendations to further strengthen financial practices and enhance transparency: ## 1. **Regular Review of Financial Records** - It is recommended that the income and expenditure entries in the ledgers be regularly reviewed and reconciled with corresponding bank statement transactions. From an audit perspective, all transactions should be easily traceable to the bank statements. Some challenges were encountered in reconciling selected samples during the audit, and a meeting is being organised to review the systems at the earliest convenience. 2. **Training on Financial Systems** - On-site training and a thorough understanding of the Free-Agent accounting system are recommended for all individuals involved in the financial management of MA UK, including auditors. This will help ensure consistency and accuracy in financial reporting. 3. **Clear Narratives in Cash Books** - Cash book narratives should be clear and include cross-references to related documents. This will aid in the transparency and accuracy of financial records, as noted in Observation 1. - **Kerala Projects:** I understand that MA UK is completing its existing commitments and has not undertaken any new projects this year. I have requested a schedule of outstanding commitments for these projects. As an audit sample, MA UK is to provide the project proposal, payment schedule, and current outstanding commitment for the Chirakkara Project. 4. **Documentation for Major Events and Projects** - It is considered good practice to provide a proposal form, budget, and final reconciliation for all major events and projects. This ensures financial accountability and transparency. 5. **Rationale for Fund Allocation** - Each year, the Board of Directors allocates funds to various projects, such as Elder Services, the Kerala House Fund, and Mobility Funds, etc. While the notes to the accounts state the amounts set aside each year, it would be beneficial from an audit perspective to understand the rationale behind each decision. 6. **Access to Online Accounting Systems** - Auditors should be granted access to the online accounting system to view the audit trail of documentation. This will facilitate more effective auditing and improve oversight. ## **Conclusion** Based on my honorary audit, MA UK has demonstrated responsible financial management and general compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
