This is a brièf report on b&half ol tha Twslees of Wild Futures, covering th8 12-month financial pariod to 31 March 2024,
plus some updates to the time ol writing In October 2024.
2024 marks the eolh anniversary of the founding ol The Monkey Sancluary and we believe, tho first primate sanctuary in
the world. From a lamily concern to a world-r8nowned charity, the oroanisation has always strived lo learn and evolve
according lo the times and ol course Ihe prirnat8s' n8eds. A lot has changed over thé years, but at the heart of it all we
havè tho exact same drive and passion for primate welfare and conseNation that has sean us through the decades.
Therefore il is with great pride thal the Trustees would like lo express our profound gralilud8 to our devotod slatf and
volunt8ers who continua to run thè charity and provide daily care for our resident rescued monkèys.
It is a huge honour that thls yèar Wild FuDJres was awarded tha Outstanding International Sanctuary Award by th6 Global
Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. This is a fanlaslic way to mark our anniversary and we havo more details on this
prestlgious and timely award in th6 r8POrt.
This year we have wel¢omed Dr Liz Tyson lo th6 Btsard. Liz is an experienced and dadioated animal advocate with 20
years, experi9nce working with animal protection and conseNation not-for-prolils. Liz has a particular focus on primate
conservation and rehabllitation in a sanctuary setting with strong experlence in campaigning, advocacy and research and
a specialisèd locus on issuos surrounding animal caplivily, wildlife conseNallon and animal law. Sha has a PhD in
Anlmal Welfarè Law and started her car6ér wod(ing at Wild Fulures Monkey Sanctuary, so we are delighted to wèlcome
her back.
This year has also seen the departur8 ol Rachel Hevesi as Exècutive Director of the charlly. Alter more than 40 years
with the charity, she has decided lo step back from thé day-to-day managamènl ol the chariiy bul hopes lo offer her

For Th Year End
1 March 2024
The trustees who are also directors of the charity lor th& purposes ol Ihe Gompanies Act 2006. present their report with
the Ilnancial statements of ihe charity for th6 year 8nded 31 March 2024. The tnJsté8s have adopted the provisions ol
Accounting and Reporting by Charities.. Statemenl of Recommended Pra¢lice applicable to charities preparing their
accounts In accordance wllh th6 Financial Reporting Standard applicab16 In the LIK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021
{elfeclive l January 20191.
Organlsatlonal Structure
The Trustees are the equivalenl ol Company directors and the Members are akin to the membèrs ot a company, or
shargholders {albeil in thls typo ol company there are no shares as il is limllad by guarantee). The Trustees are
permitted by Company Law lo make décisions for, and manage the Charity as they seè fit, provided their decisions are in
the best interests of thè Charity. In addition, the dgcision-making procèss ol the Charlty is slruclured in recognltion of the
fact that Ihe M8mbgrs who havé daily responsibility lor the welfare ol the monkeys have a unique insight into Iheir ngads
and requlrèments and 80 decisions must meet the approval ol as many of the Trustees and Members as posslbl6.
The Trusl&es employ a Dlreclor responslble for the dally lunctlDning ot the charlly. Responslbility on 8 manag8rial level Is
also delegated lo an Income Generation Managèr and an Operallonal Manager, both ol whom are answerable to the
Director. All permanent stafl attend regular mealings to enable communlcation belw8&n the dilferant sectors of the
charity's WOTk and staff are encouraged to provlde input and participate in decision making.
Rlsk management
The Trustees, In collaboration with the management t8am havg developed a rlsk managem8nt gtralegy which Comprises:
o An annual review of the risks the charity may face
o The eslablishmenl of systems and procedures to mlligate those risks identified in thè plan
o The implementation of proc8duT8S desioned to minimlse any potential Impact on the Charity should those rlsks
malerialise.
The Trustee Board has identified and works to manage cèrtain key rlsks groupèd under generic headings below. The
Charity is working on populallng a detailed risk r&gisler, which articulates these rlsks more fulty, reflects Charity
Commission best practlce and Ss able to providè information in respect ol polenllal, severity ol Impact and response.
Specifically, these gonerically grouped risks involve:
1. Financlal Sustainabllity
whilst r8s8Ne8 arè maintained to counter perceived throats to income generation, thls
remains the charity's key concern lo be managad. Significant shortfall in visitor, legacy or campaign driven incomes
streams Might result in a reduced ability lo support exlsting and naw projects, which, given the vagaries ol fashionable
exotic animals being desirable as companSon animals, rnay hamper Wild Futures, abilily to oller sanctuary lo them.
Inadequate funding would also have a detrimental impact on innovative campaignSng which itself drives funding; and
delivers onè of the charlty's key educative lunctlons around the welfare ol primates, their habitats and broader nolions ol
sustainability. We slrive to innovate in teTms of income genération and to broadon and divorsily our funding base as an
Intègral feature of our both our currant and longer-term future planning. Our budgets are set wlthin this conloxl and
always with a view to potential efficiency savings, cost control and div6rsilied income slream5 With the w8llare of the
primate residents as our primary focus,
2. Significanl Impact ol ehanges to the ragulatory and legislative environrnent relaling to prSmates The Gharlty is aware
of the very welcome developments in government and oppos11ion party pollcy in raspacl of the keeping of primates.
Depending on the model adopted, Ihls might increase pressure on Wild Futures to accept more primat&s and capaclly
issues arg a signillcant and ongoing concern, which is rocognised and lorms the focus ol futur8 planning. Meanwhilè, the
inlake policy prioritises the prirnales already resident at the Sanctuary.
3. Oala Protection . We pay close attentlon lo dala prolaction risks across all ol our activltigs lo rellacl our concern for
our donors. and supporters, data. Th6 charily saclor continues lo be subject to increased règulation on fundraising
practices. Wild Futures is GDPR compliant and we continually monitor our operations to ensure compliance.
4. Escape or disease transmission Th8 Wild Futures, Sanctuary is li¢ensed undér tha Zoo kncensing Act 1981. It is

Wild Futures is honourgd and delighted lo announce that we have been awarded the 2024 Outstandlng Internalional

Thè Outstanding Sanctuary Award recognises an oroanisatlon displaylng excellence in humane and responsible animal

and rescu8 centres, supporting them lo achieve tha highesl Standards of Excellence, promoto collaboralion, and raisa

Wlld Futures was sèlected from morè than 200 GFAs￿9rt1Iied sanctuaries worldwide lor Ihls honour. We hav8 b8en an
accrediled sanctuary with Global Federation ol Anirnal Sanctuaries {GFAS} lor mor9 Ihan a decade and were the first

ar6 honoured lo bè a¢¢radited by GFAS, and w8 daeply appreciate the hard work that they ar8 doing in making sure that
true sanctuaries arg recognised as such.
WELFARE
Ac¢reditation places welfare as priority. Rescue and rehabilitation can be a complax process and our dedicated team
work hard lo be flexibl8 and responsiv6 to individual neod as well as undèrstanding thè social impact on groups as we
work on Ihe inlroduclion pro￿sS. What works lor one monkey may be totally unsuitabl8 for another. This year, for
example, we had to éecide whalher splitting two males, who arrived togalher, one ol whom is physically disabled, was in
Iheir bost interest while weighing up their prospects with potential female companions. In lacl, the team judged perfeclly
and Apollo and Bobby are noNV thriving wilh Iheir n8w partners, while still ablè to ¢heerfully greet each other across
18rritorias.
We also have lo look ID the long terrn for primates who are especlally long4ived, such as Gizzie, a black capped
capuchin..
Glzzle was rescued from the UK primate pel trade in 2010 and given a home for life with us al The Monkey Sanctuary.
She arrived und8rweighl, missing digits and hall ol her tail. She was small, malnourishgd, and in pain. Gizzie had been
kept as a pet in an open-sided breezeblock outbuilding for many years with just a small box with a heat-lamp. As a South
American prlmat8, she was unable to cope with the lowlgmperalures that we 8xperi8nce here in ihe UK and. as a result,
developed Iroslblle. She lost the end ol her lail and some of her fingers due lo Ihe extreme cold and damp she was
forced lo endure. She was left crippled by arthritis and chilblains, unable to grip as she should wiihoul many of h8r
fingers, and, even now, she cannot uso her hands properly.

CAMPAIGNS
We are d8termlned that Wild Futures will not only focus on mopping up the mess created by the UK primatè pal trada,
but that we will also be instrumental in turnlng off the lap. For as long as thère is a UK primate pet tradé there wlll be

We will write In some detail on the new legislation as il Is such an Important slep in our campaign:. In June 2023, Wlld
Futures contributed to a lour-week consullalion on 'Llcènsing ot specialist private primate keepèrs in England, launched
by Dalra. Nearly six rnonths later, on th8 14th Decèmber, we wgre notified that th8 Govemment had laié the draft Animal

June 2023 wnsullatlon. Once debatad and approved by Parllament, Ihe lic8nce would prohibit the keeping of PTimat8S
as pels in England without a specialist licence.
Although pleas8d that this draft licence had beèn laid, we were concerned over somo of terminology in the draft and,
while we knew we would not be able to chanoe it 81 this lato stag&, wa wanted lo addr&ss il.
Throughout the months of January and February, Wild Futures worked clos81y with members of Born Free, Human8
Society InlernationallUK, RSPCA, The UK Centre ol Animal Law, and Wildlife and Countryside Llnk to colla18 ovr
corKerns and, collaborativèly, sond them lo MPS and interested partiès. Tho initial 'debate' was on 31 st January 2024,
and our Ictler was used and cited by Labour MP Daniel Zeichnèr lo highlight Ihe lallbacks ol the licence a huge
achicvement lor both us and tha other organisations.
The next proc8ss was lor The House ol Lords to review th8 draft. Thls stage,13 normally a 'box ticking procèss,, however
Baroness Hayman submitted a motion to T8gret, forcing the subje¢t to be discussed in session in the House ol Lords,
rathèr than just pa8sod. This would likely nol chang& the outcome, however havlng that discussion allowed those who
had haard and ￿hOe￿ our concerns to put those concgrns on record, The joinl1glter that we sent was used heavily in
this discussion.
As predicted, In March 2024. Ihe Govèrnment passed a Statutory Instrument ISI) The Animal Welfare {Primal8 Liconcesl
IEnglandl Regulations 2024, and although it is not the outcome that wo want, wa are slill hopeful that il will make a
meaningful difference. The licènea will come into effect by April 2026. Wa were informed thal tha accompanying
guidance lor the licance would be available in April 2024, but we ara, unlortunaloly, still wailing to see it.
Th8 Licenc8 in summary.,

CHANGINQ PLACES
As mentioned Sn Ihc Introduction, the charity has a new Director as Rachel Hevesi rctSred trom this role in lat8 2023. On
stepping down, Rachel shared a faw thoughts and thanks with Ihe Wild Fulures team and our supporters. When l first
volunteered al the Monkey Sanctuary, 40 years ago, I was intrigued, bul il did not o¢cur lo mè that Ihe monkeys would
capture my heart and lèach me so much about being a human prirnale. Since then, the organisalion, that became a
charity, that became Wild Futures, has evolved and grown, has cared,18arnl, taught and shared so much, wlth a mission
that has innovalad and achieved beyond Its slze.
l am so lucky lo have met th8 monkeys who insplr8 me with th6lr courage and inslin¢t to suNlve, to QV8rcom8 Ihe
sullering they have all suffered. l am so lucky to have shared a passion lor justice with so rnany people over the years-
lo be part ol a leam whose compassion, dètermination and intèlligence have changed lives. Together wa can achieve so
much. l am 80 grateful to have had the opportunity lo be a part ol this wonderful charity.
For me, this is the lime to step asida from ihg daily op6r8tions and become a trustee - after all, there is still a great deal
to do! Thank you to everyonè who has shared and still shares this journey. On my last day. at our traditional leavers, lea
and caka coremony, each one of us shared our besl monkey moments and the stories told me what l already knew- the
monkeys and the charity are in sale hands. l only know one word to oxplain what It all means: the woolly rnonkey "eeolk".
At limes our voice must be their volce and theirs is so b8autifiJl that wg owe it lo tham to mak8 ours well heard.
We are so pleased to welcome Sarah Hanson to her now role and sharad this with our supporters-
"Some of you may already know Sarah, as shg has been with the charity for 15 years. Sarah started out as a volunteer al
Wild Futures, whilst studying for her undargradualè degrae. She already had a keen interest in protecting wildlife and
had some experionce WOTking ovorseas saving wild animals from poaching. Her time voluntegring at The Monkey
Sanctuary opened her eyes lo the plight ol primates wllhin ihe UK, and the horrors ol Ihe legal pet trade. This inspired
her to undertake a masters degrae in primate conseNation focusing her dissertation specifically on the UK primate pet
trada. She then started her 8mploymenl at Wild Futures as tha Campaigns, PR and Fundraising Officer, eventually being
promoted to Supporter Relations and Office Manager, and Ihen recantly taking over the role ot Director from Rachol."

Outgolng R8sourc8s
Total expgndilure lor the charity has Incrèased from £603,044 in 2028 to £630,756 this year. The Charity continues to be
run on very tight resources and primala care is a 2417 job requiring continual rotation ol staff. Slall wages have increased
