Berkshire Search And Rescue Dogs is a small team of volunteers, currently consisting of 26 members. Of those, there are 4 trustees and a further 6 on the committee. The charity is managed by the committee, who meet every 6 weeks, and are trusted by the team to make decisions in the best interest of the charity on matters such as fundraising, recruitment and training (CPD).

Every year, before the AGM, all members have the opportunity to nominate themselves for positions on the committee, and these must be supported by two non committee members. All positions are then voted for at the AGM, and all full members can vote. Those members voted into the positions of chairman, vice-chair, secretary and treasurer automatically become trustees.

The normal activities of the charity are to assist the police in the search for missing vulnerable people. We are called to assist the police on searches at no cost. The charity is entirely voluntary and all money raised is from public donations, grants, collections and fundraising events. We meet to train on at least a weekly basis and have assessments and operational requirements which we have to meet which are set by Lowland Rescue who are the umbrella organisation for all Lowland Search and Rescue teams.

During 2023, we were called out 20 times to assist the police in searching for vulnerable missing people, and we had 11 dogs qualified and ready to be deployed at any time. While none of our dogs had finds on a live search this year, their efficient way of working helped to eliminate areas very quickly. This meant that other vital resources could be targeted to where they were needed most.

We also managed to qualify a further 4 air scenting dogs, and a second ground scenting dog. With only 4 ground scenting dogs in the country, we are proud to have 2 of these life-saving dogs with us.

During the financial year April ‘23 - March ‘24 we made £25,843.23, the majority of this (£21,604.89) being generous donations. We were lucky enough to be selected as the Wokingham mayors’ chosen charity for this year, which really helped to provide a much needed boost.

During this period, we also had £21,068.48 worth of expenses. Our insurance alone is close to £5,000, and we spent almost £10,000 on equipment to make sure our volunteers and their dogs have everything they need to deploy in all weathers, at any time of day or night. A further £2,500 was spent on training/CPD for both new and existing members. We do not currently have a reserves policy, but this is something we’re working on.
