THE BROMLEY BOY SINGERS
ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1.9.23 TO 31.8.24
The annual report fulfils the requirements of the Charity Commission for a small charity (registration number 1102146). The Bromley Boy Singers (BBS) was founded in 1977 and continues to fulfil the purpose of providing musical education and training in vocal technique and choral singing specifically for boys through regular rehearsal and performance opportunities.
Membership and recruitment
Travis Baker, Director of Music, and Carole Poll/Becky Hodgetts who teach the Training choir have been active in recruitment, visiting local schools and building relationships with teaching staff. The membership of the choir has dropped a little with current membership at 46.
Staff
Travis Baker, as musical director, is responsible for all aspects of training and performance and conducts the Concert Choir and VISTRA. Alexandra Carter, assistant musical director, is primarily responsible for the Intrepid Choir. Carole Poll/Becky Hodgetts look after recruitment and teaches the Training Choir. Krystal Tunnicliffe plays for Concert Choir rehearsals and is the concert accompanist. Ian Maxwell is a volunteer rehearsal accompanist and maintains the music library. Claire Wibberley is a volunteer rehearsal accompanist. Thomas Handley manages the BBS website and assists with the Training Choir and music library. Gemma Zufolo, Chair, coordinates organisational aspects of the choir, especially concert arrangements, safeguarding and any confidential matters relating to membership.
Organisation
Day-to-day management of the choir is carried out by meetings of the leadership team (paid staff together with the chairman). The annually elected committee (consisting of chairman, secretary, treasurer and up to 5 other members) is statutorily responsible for overseeing planning, administration and organisation and normally meets three or four times a year. Additional members may be co-opted. BBS gratefully acknowledges those who give freely of their time to help. The elected committee for the year was Gemma Zufolo (Chair), Paula August (secretary), Colin
Turnbull/Thomas Loftus (treasurer), Sarah Keegan-Day, Freya Hellier (until July 2024), Becky Hodgetts and Caroline Navin.
Funding
The main source is parental subscriptions and occasional grants from charitable trusts. Reserves are maintained to ensure that no boy is denied the opportunity of joining because of financial constraints.
Rehearsals
Rehearsals for all four choirs take place on Wednesday evenings, with additional sessions for Intrepid, Concert Choir and VISTRA on some Sundays. Additionally, the well-established spring half-term course is a vital part of concert preparation and BBS acknowledges the provision of facilities by Trinity School for the 2023 course.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Charity”) for the year ended 31 August 2024.
Responsibilities and basis of report:
As the Charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent Examiner’s Statement:
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
